UPDATE: Tomb Raider Definitive PS4 confirmed at 60FPS, Xbox One still unconfirmed

Thursday, 23 January 2014 16:21 GMT By Dave Cook

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has been confirmed to run at 60 frames-per-second on PS4, but the Xbox One version is still up in the air. Square Enix has now sent us a statement on the matter.

UPDATE: A Square Enix representative has sent us the following statement on the whole frame-rate issue. It reads, “Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy.”

ORIGINAL STORY: The news follows my Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition interview, in which we discuss the game’s new improvements, next-gen tech, and how the experience will help fuel the Tomb Raider sequel.

It was confirmed in a GamesRadar livestream by executive producer Scott Amos.

During the stream he addressed claims the game was locked at 30FPS on both formats and explained, “Uh, no, I mean, you’re seeing it right here. So, there definitely, you know, one of the things that people had asked, they had heard various quotes, actually heard some misquotes, our goal from the beginning was always to be 1080p gameplay at 30 frames per second minimum.

“Some people have taken that and misconstrued like, ‘Oh, it’s locked to 30!’ Actually, no, it’s literally, the game was always from the beginning, our absolute requirement was gameplay at 1080p and minimum 30 frames per second. And anything past that was gravy. That’s the kind of game we are, the kind of world we are, and as you’re sitting here looking at it, like we said on the PS4, this is running at 60.”

He didn’t mention the Xbox One build. However, RocketChainsaw writer and NeoGAF admin EatChildren claims to have heard from “verified sources” that the Xbox One build is averaging at 30FPS, while both run at 1080p native resolution.

He added, “For most of your play, and during action scenes, the Xbox One build will sit on around 30 fps. On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 build will attempt to hit 60 fps as often as possible, and does a pretty good job of doing so, but does have slight dips under 60 fps during certain scenarios.”

Meanwhile, we’ve asked our own Square contacts for confirmation. Stay tuned.

If this turns out to be true, and the same thing happens with Destiny for example, i will firmly shift my multiplat gaming over to PS4 (or PC). A shame really, my gamerscore is FAR bigger than my trophy collection, and most friends are on XBLive.

“If this turns out to be true”

Once we got the specs, it became pretty obvious that the PS4 was going to be the right choice for 3rd party. I don’t understand the surprise or wait and see approach. For those who own both, it’s pretty simple.

Well since I have been a console gamer my whole life I was always used to fps lower than 30…you pc fellaz are way too spoiled.

So its a swap from the last generation.

Its not that much of a big deal. The PS3 ran most multi-plat games slightly worse than the 360. Now its the PS4 running games a lot better than the XBone. Games are still going to be released for each. Good games. Worth buying.

I’m far more concerned about the complete silence from MS about when the updates for Live and the console are going to start rolling out. If that awful Party system is still there when Titanfall comes out I imagine a lot of people are going to be pretty pissed.

What happened after Xbox One’s release?
    - Resolution (1080p vs 720p) no longer matters.
    - Frame-rate (60fps vs 30fps) no longer matters.
    - Being caught while illegally bribing no longer matters.

I’m not really trying to downplay anything, sorry if it came across that way, as it stands right now no one should buy the Xbone version of this game, its distinctly worse.

The resolution I can give or take, its not really all that important in the scheme of things. Frame-rate however, is very important.

The more console gamers we can expose to 60FPS and the difference it can make, the more eyes we can educate the more games are going to start seeing it as an obtainable target. 60FPS is a wonderful beautiful thing, you just don’t know it yet.

    Let us educate your eyeballs.

Wow, the first few comments seemed promising in this not just turning into your typical fanboy warfare but then comment #6 lets me down :(

Still preordered this game, i’d like to play this game again with enhanced visuals as it was an extremely solid game on the 360, if it runs the same as that and looks better then that’s enough for me.

COD Ghosts on PS4 Singleplayer 60fps or 30fps? Cause like I heard Killzone has 30fps in SP but 60fps in MP. I have to say there is a huge difference between Ghosts on PS3 and Ghosts on PS4 however I guess its still ok on PS3 you spoiled brat!

^ And 1080p, unlike on XB1. Same goes for AC4. Last gen ports failing to meet those basic standards despite being straight up carry overs should have been more than enough of an alarm. This news should surprise no one.

    #18 1 year ago
  19. Nickwpearce

Ghosts was 1080p for PS4 with slowdown and 720p upscaled on xbox one with no slow down… I played last gen at 720p cause i was sick of slowdown and screen tearing…

IMO its quick lazy porting for both consoles, we know PS4 is more powerful but all this crap ’3rd party is for ps4′ honestly with sonys servers???

also this is an article that doesnt confirm a thing, lately all the bashing for m$ and nintendo is getting out of control while sony is close to being bankrupt the other two companies are financially fine for many many years unlike sony.

Tomb raider which is a fast action platform shooter at 60fps sounds awesome, but no one has mentioned that it isnt constant, it dips! this isn’t the n64 and this isnt goldeneye or perfect dark frame rates staying at 30fps is better than 60fps dropping to 40fps

each to their own i guess

    I have a dream…

I have a dream, that one day we will live in a culture where games will not be judged by the format they are released on, or the resolution and framerate they run at, but by the quality of their gameplay!

    Some day!

    #23 1 year ago
  24. absolutezero

In certain genres FPS is directly tied to quality of gameplay. Resolution less so much.

    #24 1 year ago
  25. Ireland Michael

@24 Yes, I know. I even made that argument to Dave that in certain cases (depending on genre), the framerate can have a huge impact on gameplay.

But at the end of the day, we’re all gamers. We can enjoy our games on numerous format that gives us what we want, and that’s all that matters. Whether it’s PC, PS4, Xbox 360, or a freaking GameBoy.

Someone called me “The Martin Luther King of gaming” earlier today, which I found funny. So I just decided to run with it. Hahahaha.

Well, this is good news, since I plan to get a PS4 in a few years.

To be honest, I thought Tomb Raider looked and played great on PS3–one of the years best–but if the improvement is really this dramatic, then I guess I’ll sell my PS3 copy and pick up the Definitive Edition later on…or just get it for PC. It remains to be seen how well my future rig will run this.

I can’t even tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps. 20fps and 30fps yes, but not any higher.

As long as the game is good, I don’t really mind if it’s technically inferior. Ghosts was superior on PS4, but to my eyes it looked better on the Xbone due to the colouring and lighting.

    #28 1 year ago
  29. absolutezero

FPS is not linked to how good a game “looks”. Which is why using the cinematic FPS of 24 wrong-headed.

FPS is directly linked to interaction, it makes everything smoother and far more responsive, it makes your link to the gameworld better, faster, stronger.

So no a higher FPS will not make your cut-scenes look better but will always improve the actual meat of playing games, which is interaction. Your a passive viewer of a movie you never change the camera position and the way movies are produced means that there is almost constant motion blue which obviously helps disguise the slower frame rate.

I can easily believe that there are people that can not tell the difference between 60 and 30 FPS but I also believe that if you sit down one of those people in front of a PC displaying a variety of games at 60 and have them play for a few hours they really will begin to notice the difference not necessarily in visuals but in the smoothness of gameplay and controls.

    Jesus…. Ekona please…!

It’s funny how every Xbox fan got faulty eyes after the generation switch.

As it seems, they can’t see a difference anymore between “native 1080p” and “native 720p” or 30FPS and 60FPS.

“Uh…..it’s all the same to me.”
    Yeah, sure!

    #30 1 year ago
  31. Ireland Michael

@28 Trust me mate, there is a huge difference. Not just in how it looks, but how it *feels*.

60FPS is 30 extra frames in which an imput can be calculated or done. That allows for more precise aiming in a shooter, better steering in a racer, tighter controls in a beat-em-up, and skillful timing in a spectacle shooter.

I agree with you in that it shouldn’t be the be all and end all. The willy waving about specs and hardware and all that crap is so tedious. Let people enjoy their games on whatever format offers them the experience they want.

The Xbox is a potato compared to the PS4, confirmed once again.

Happy at least one side will be experiencing 60fps though, it isn’t as overrated as you all think!

I agree @31, it shouldn’t be a factor of “if this game isn’t running at 60fps I wont buy it” otherwise I wouldn’t have played GTA V, The Last of Us, MGS4 and the rest of the good part of the console library but if I had a choice in the matter I would never play 30fps again.

    #32 1 year ago
  33. Moonwalker1982

Weird these conflicting reports. On January 20 they said 30fps for both.

Either way, it’s ridiculous if one can reach 60fps and the other can’t. This is a fucking old-gen game too with some improvements. Is the difference between X1 and PS4 really that night and day after all? I recall multiple devs saying the difference between the two would be even smaller to PS360. Bullshit, this actually would be far worse and we are this early in the consoles’ lifecycle, what could this mean for future multiplatform games? Similar differences to this or even worse?

As a big Xbox guy this is definitely bad news, not because i give a shit about this very unessecary Tomb Raider edition, but because this could mean the same kind of difference or worse for other upcoming multiplatform games. Not good at all.

Well this just says it all. Ps4 the TRUE next gen.

    #37 1 year ago
  38. Ireland Michael

@38 There is nothing “next gen” about either piece of hardware, because they’re both only roughy at the level of what would be considered a half decent gaming PC.

In five years, these machines will be more outdated than the Xbox 360 or PS3 are now.

But who honestly cares which is “better”? Why are people so invested in that fact? Why do they get so wrapped up in it? What does it really matter?

Michael don’t be nasty, allow them to think their consoles are something “new” for a little bit longer… It’s nice to see them happy, bless.

  40. Moonwalker1982

    @38

That’s why i really don’t see these consoles lasting as long as the PS3 and 360 did.

Resolution is not even that big of a deal for me. I thought it was until i saw the difference and it really ain’t all that noticeable for me. But 30fps vs 60fps….is very noticeable. Especially on a 110 inch screen. If all my friends weren’t on Xbox, i’d be going all PC, but sadly there are still plenty games that only release on the consoles and it will stay that way too.

  41. Eregol

Regardless of the difference in frame rate the PS3 to PS4 comparison video didn’t really show enough of a difference in the general look to convince me to part with my money for this version. I’ve already played and completed it on PS3, and really enjoyed my time with it.
I could possibly be swayed if they were to do it as a PS3 to PS4 upgrade. But really I’m struggling to see the point in this new version.

  42. Nickwpearce

@22 can you read? posting some twitter post of an ign (worse site online) editor is proof? there is various reports of the ps4 having lots of issues with games running at 60 fps

I’m not bitter at all i enjoy my games on all consoles, but a constant frame rate is more important than one that drop from 60 to 40/50 IMO

most pc dickheads are too far up on their pedestal to even admit it

this console ‘war’ is far from over in all honesty i hope sony goes bankrupt because they are one of the worse companies around and have been for years

    Wow, he is right though.

You sound like one bitter dude.

“i hope sony goes bankrupt because they are one of the worse companies around and have been for years” – Nahh they are not that bad like, you just sound angry you ‘sided’ with Xbox and now the PS4 is pushing more power.
    ______

I would rather have an inconsistent framerate trying to hit 50-60 than play a full game running at 30fps.

“slight dips under 60 fps” hardly matter, you won’t feel them.

    ______

“oh and i love this game but why would i for out full price for some upgraded visuals that dont even compare to the pc??”

At least your consistent with what you say, most of them have been shouting that graphics don’t matter for years but this proves once again they are all mostly ignorant fools since they are all running out to pay more money for ‘upgraded visuals’…

I heard they still are working on code for some secret optimisation/part to kick in in the xbox inside.

It was in the news ages ago i am surprised none of you even saw. xbox have a lot more power than ps4 and pc but since they had to rushed xbox to get it out to the fans faster so we could enjoy it longer they didnt finish the code properly unlocking its true power, few more months and the code will be done I heard and I should know I have a relative at microsoft who helped make the xbox.

Actually I’ll agree with you on this.. not that it’s MORE powerful than PS4, but yeah, there is some optimisation going on, I read that also. Isn’t it something to do with the eSRam?… or something along those lines..

At the end of the day though I still think the PS4 will have it.. There’s only so much optimisation you can do.. and the PS4 does actually have the better HW.

Yeah this stuff was being said last year too, that some development tools weren’t fully ready yet and that is why some multiplats weren’t the same resolution as PS4. But damn…a game that came out for the last-gen consoles, only with some graphical improvements and can’t reach 60fps while the other can? That is bad. But i hope you are right about optimisation, fact is…CD did not mention Xbox One at all, not a good look.

@30 I made my commitment to Xbone knowing that it was the technically weaker platform. I’m still comfortable with that, as for me it’s a system I prefer in all other aspects.

720/30 and 1080/60 are not the same, not by a country mile, I don’t disagree with that. I don’t disagree that the PS4 version of most (if not all) multiplats will look better on that system to most. I’m only telling you what my eyes tell me. It’s the same reason I prefer LCD TVs to Plasma ones: They simply look better to my eyes. There may be a hundred technical reasons why plasma is better, but I can’t see it.

Once you have a game in the isolation of your living room, and cannot do a direct comparison, then as long as it looks amazing to you then nothing else matters. If it looks and plays like arse as well at that time, that’s when you have a problem.

@31 It’s a fair point about reaction times, but then again I’ve never noticed the difference in previous gens between 30 and 60fps, even back when I was gaming on the PC and could change it at will. I’m not saying that I’m right and everyone else is wrong, as the reverse is more likely true, but it’s not something I considered important when I made my next-gen gaming decision.

TLDR: As long as I’m happy, people can argue over specs all they want.

Yeah, 60 FPS are better then 30, at least as long as they are stable. But do you have to care? No. Some do, some not, its fine, you can have the same fun with 30 like someone other has with 60.

In the End, if you didn’t have a Problem with 30 FPS on the old Consoles why should you have one now?

    @42

Right back at you, I never stated anything in my first post on whether this article is fact or fiction because I could give two shits about this whole “my console can do more frames than yours” debate.

Like I stated before you sounded “bitter” and even immature with your original post, because this article stated that the PS4 version of this game runs at a higher fps than the Xbox one and something about that appeared to upset you.

You first mentioned COD: Ghost’s resolution for both the PS4 and Xbox one, which made no sense regarding the information provided to you by this article.

You then stated how you’re upset on how both the XBO and Nintendo are receiving negative press at the moment and Sony is not, which again, made no sense regarding the information provided to you by this article.

Then you took a turn for the worst when you starting mentioning on how both Microsoft and Nintendo are doing well financially than Sony and “Sony” is on the verge of going bankrupt when its finances is compare to its competition.

Once again, you’re making no “sense” regarding the information provided to you by this article.

So like I stated before, do you even know the point that you were trying to make?

    And you know what?

You don’t even have to answer that, cause you’re clearly to foolish to realize what you even wrote..

Agreed about the Xbox One, i prefer it too in all the the other aspects. That is why i am so gutted about this news. I had definitely expected X1 to do 60fps too. Interesting what you said about LCD and Plasma. I can never ever get used to LCD after having owned Plasma. The ghosting/blurring is terrible on LCD. Might have gotten better through the years, but in 2012 i owned of the best LED/LCD’s for gaming and the blurring was just impossible for me.

Wow….It seems someone posting on here is a fan of the baloney misterxmedia and his “insider”s keep preaching. Dual layer MB that will be powered by optimization and it’s only half performance, secret GPU, etc etc.

As a Xbox Fan, I realized the fact the PS4 was more powerful long ago, and I own a PS4 because of it. No amount of optimization can overcome the fact that one console simply has a more powerful GPU and faster Ram. If optimization could fix it all, then none of us PC gamers would need anything past a mid range video card because they could simply optimize it, right?

Give it up already, it’s $500 for a less powerful gaming console that gives you better motion controls and a better multimedia experience. it’s what it is #dealwithit.

  113. justerthought

There is a lot xbox frustration in this comment section all arguing about nothing. The frame rate is the issue. Who gives a toss if someone got the game early. It’s still 30fps. If you are not happy, complain to those who caused the problem. MS made the lame console, so get angry with them. You don’t gain anything arguing with people who have PS4 because we are happy. I’m just glad Crystal Dynamics had the sense not to gimp the PS4 version to match the lame XB1 version. That would have been wrong.

    #113 1 year ago
  114. Spinergy02

    @112

Your first reply to my first comment on this article was originally that I did not have a copy because the game wasn’t even out yet. I never stated it was running AT 60fps, but it was much higher than 30 and closer to 60. Anyone that has played video games for a few years should be able to easily spot 30fps and 60fps.

    @113

The game looks gorgeous regardless that it’s probably running a bit slower than PS4. I’ve put in a couple hours of gameplay and still haven’t noticed any hiccups or obvious drops so I’m very happy with it. They did a great job with the voice commands, but I could care less about their usage of the kinect (you can lean to change POV in certain situations). Also, I wasn’t targeting PS4 owners with my comment. Merely stating that the game runs great on Xbox One regardless of if running at a slightly lower framerate (and definitely not 30fps).
