Candy Jam cocks a snook at King’s trademark claim

Wednesday, 22nd January 2014 01:33 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Indie developer Cariboo has launched Candy Jam, a game jam inspired by Candy Crush Saga King’s trademark on the word “candy”. The only rules of the jam are to “make a game involving candies. Consider using the word ‘candy’ several times, also ‘scroll’, ‘saga’ and ‘apple’ might give bonus points.” To avowed purpose of the jam is “because trademarking common names is ridiculous”. Got a game that fits the bill? Submit it to the jam. The deadline is February 3.

“because trademarking common names is ridiculous”

So everything should be named after uncommon terms in order to protect their IP and prevent brand hijacking or copycats?

What if the success of your uncommon title makes it common… do you then lose the ability to copyright it?

The whole argument is fucking stupid. Trademark law sucks balls, but that’s more to do with the lawmakers than it is the developer/publisher.
