Shroud of the Avatar reaches $3 million in crowdfunding

Monday, 20th January 2014 00:19 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Shroud of the Avatar has passed another major funding milestone as it approaches a second early access period.

“Shroud of the Avatar has crossed the $3M milestone thanks to your generous support. The team and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of our Backers for your belief in both our team and our vision for New Britannia,” Richard “Lord British” Garriott wrote in the game’s latest update.

The shared-worlds RPG – Garriott insists it’s not an MMO – hosted a brief early access period last month. A second open period is expected on January 22, giving backers access to a build called Release 2.

More details of the open period, latest game updates and lore are available in the full update.

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues is a PC exclusive, and is expected to open its doors for good in March, when release 4 drops.

Thanks, Polygon.

Which is cool, but not unexpected.

Every email I get from them is designed to squeeze more money out of me. It feels like every other sentence is about money, and how to donate more.

It gives me a bad vibe about where the game will end up.

As much as nostalgia makes me want new Ultima, I just don’t feel right about funding Garriott’s further and continued decscent into complete and utter batshit crazy bonkers land. Loved everything right up to and including UO (in its pre-WoW prime), but if I had to describe his work and the man himself in the years that followed, the best I could come up with is “Uncomfortable to watch.”

I know it’s early access and all, but this game looks absolutely awful.
