Watch Dogs: pre-delay budget was $68 million, producer claims

Thursday, 16th January 2014 13:01 GMT By Dave Cook

Watch Dogs executive producer Stéphane Decroix has revealed game’s pre-delay budget, shedding new light on the scale of Ubisoft’s cross-gen project.

It follows comments out of Ubisoft explaining the Watch Dogs delay, and stress that the company’s aim is to ‘win’ the next generation with its open world romp.

Now, Nintendo Everything spotted an article from last year, which places a dollar sum on the Watch Dogs project. It came from French business site Challenges, in which Decroix placed Ubisoft’s budget at €50 million, which translates to roughly $68 million. The figure doesn’t take marketing into account.

As you’re no doubt aware there was a tonne of Watch Dogs marketing material released last year, so it’d be interesting to see the combined figure. what do you make of the game’s budget?

    … and this is why Ubisoft gets my vote everytime, delaying to obviously polish the game. Even though so much has been spent altogether.

    Didn’t they say this started off as a Splinter Cell game the other day?

    So was this 68 million part of the original conception or only released after the change in direction?

    Ubi did something similar with Zombie U. Complained about not making much from the game, yet it had a complete design change half way through (from Killer Freaks from Outta Space)…

    Obviously big changes in art design / gameplay are going to bump up the cost of a project, but thats down to poor planning more than anything.

    Much respect for taking the extra time to make it right.

    The E3 trailer for this game sold me before I saw any gameplay. I just love the concept of this character. I think it’s going to be a blast.

    Its in the best interest of everyone that Ubi isn’t rushing it.

    @2: Wasn’t it a cancelled Driver game?

    No videos released as of late have been as impressive as the E3 reveal video they showed. That looked so much better than anything shown after that.

    @5 Yup, that’s right. I was thinking it wasn’t a cancelled Splinter Cell but it was something, couldn’t remember what.
