UK: Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS top hardware sales in 2013

Monday, 13th January 2014 16:40 GMT By Sherif Saed

2013 is over and the numbers are in, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is the best selling home console in the UK, whereas the Nintendo 3DS family is the best selling handheld.

Sales data reported by Chart-Track and posted by Eurogamer, show the Xbox 360 selling more than any other home console this year, despite suffering a 30.7% plummet.

Nintendo’s handhelds are the real winner here, with the 3DS -including 3DS XL and 2DS- topping the chart, up 4% from last year. Individually, the 3DS sales were down 69.9%, though a healthy surge of 51% from the 3DS XL sales and the launch of the 2DS, managed to compensate for that.

Surprisingly the Wii U was the only home console that showed growth, with a 41.5% increase in sales. Though as Eurogamer noted, it’s due to the console launching only at the end of 2012. The console is however outperformed by every other home or handheld.

2013 totalled a 5% increase in hardware for all platforms over 2012, with a 38% increase in revenue.

We reported on part of this news last week but that was before the figures were made public. Now you know the rest of the story, what do you think?

As long as they have 1 exclusive a month, I’m more than happy this year:

    Mario Kart
    DKC
    Bayonetta 2
    Smash Bros

I’m really hoping Bayonetta 2, X and whatever else don’t slip to 2015 otherwise 1 title every 2 months isn’t really enough as the rough launch year showed them.

They can’t rely on third parties either, I hope they have been beavering away! ;)

This is a nicely presented list:

But I can’t see all these titles making it out the door. All I really want is Zombie U2 set in Paris! :( I curse everyone who didn’t purchase the first title, even if they didn’t have a Wii U! ;)

This month’s exclusive is? 12 titles? 3 Multi/9 Exclusives. Take away the multi. Take away undated exclusives which shouldn’t even be in that thread.

6 Exclusives in total confirmed for 2014, even less if something slips. As of today.

You will never get Zombi U: 2. Never!

Looks like the UK don’t take kindly to Wii U, a new strategy is in need. Or further ignorance could be applied to this factor as well.

Far more interesting is that PS4 outsold PS3, which in turn outsold X1.

Strange, wasn’t PS4 announced to be highest selling console in UK?

    Someone doesn’t know to count…

    @5,
Entire europe doesn’t give a damn about Wii U.
I mean, 10k consoles were returned back to Ninty last quarter. Never saw that happening. Add to that clearance sales containing 99 euros Wii U in Belgium during Christmas of all times, when it should be selling the most.
    Its a lost case.

It’s too bad about Zombie U2, there probably will never be another one because of the first one’s sales.

I agree, no matter how you much you like or dislike the Wii U, when a entire market says no to your product, you have a problem.

Wii U is dead. Nothing can save it now, Nintendo might as well call it a day and focus on their 3DS which is keeping them afloat.

I will eat my pants if the Wii-U does a turn around and becomes successful like the 3DS by next year.

“2013 totalled a 5% increase in hardware for all platforms over 2012, with a 38% increase in revenue.”

This is great news. Hope the increase continues so the market can finally get past this horribly extended, overlong console cycle that has been keeping many games (Including PC titles) back for 2-3 extra years. Witcher 3, Lords of Fallen and Evolve. Need more of them and less of “cross-gen” titles ASAP!

@gamesmaster – you seem to say that like it’s a good thing? Can’t understand the hate towards the U on here. It’s a games console, it plays good games and I’m a gamer. All the other stuff is irrelevant. And if you think Nintendo is going to go under from this where were you when N64 and Gamecube were Nintendo’s home consoles? Heard it all before. Next 12 months look great for U and Pc and I have a backlog from psplus. Good times ahead.
