UK games retail made £600m in December - report

The UK's game retail sector made £600 million in December alone, score-keeper Chart-Track has revealed.

MCV reported on the numbers today, flagging up software sales of £265.4 million, bolstered by the sale of some 1.25 million game consoles during the month.

Digital games and accessories were not included in the figure. Speaking with the site, HMV game boss Phil Browes said of the stats, “HMV had a very strong December trading period, ahead of our expectations which is fantastic news. Games was one of the star performers with strong demand on next-gen but also a real surge in demand for the key current-gen titles in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

GAME category director Charlotte Knight said, “The arrival of Xbox One and PS4 meant it was an epic Christmas. We’ve never had two massive launches so close together before – let alone at Christmas – and we are delighted with their success. The format holders and publishers have absolutely delivered.”

With more people surely buying next-gen formats in 2014, could this Christmas trump last year's? It's looking likely.
