Razer’s Project Christine makes PC modularity easy

Razer has piteched a hell of a gaming PC concept; a modular rig where even the most clueless of users can identify and swap in parts as hardware advances.

Project Christine is designed to allow anybody to build and customise their own PC, and upgrade it whenever new hardware comes out, without needing to know anything about how system are put together, or even opening a case. Razer’s idea is that Christine’s PCI-Express architecture would automatically sync components.

The base tower – or rack, perhaps – would allow for up to four GPUs with SLI, multiple SSD and RAID drives, and an input/output module, cooling unit, a control panel, and more.

You can get a feel for the concept in the video and images below, and check out Razer’s website for more information. There’s no guarantee such a thing would ever come to market, and even if it did it would mean sacrificing one of the PC’s most lauded traits – its openness.

Razer is best known as a peripheral manufacturer but moved into gaming systems with the Razer Blade laptop. Last time we spoke with CEO Min-Liang Tan, he was quite coy about the possibility of desktop systems.

    I thought that too but judging from the size of the ‘slides’ it looks like there will probably be enough room for vents at the back or even at the front of each ‘slide’…

    I cant imagine them crafting something this awesome and to not think of the cooling.

    And the PSU is water cooled, it says so on the picture from the side.

    As a concept this is a fantastic idea, but it would all depend on the pricing of the base unit and the modules, if they could do it in an affordable fashion I would be all over it.

    The unfortunate, or just plain dumb, thing about this is that it’s all proprietry HW.. You buy ‘blocks’ from Razor and mount them in a frame… nice idea but it’s far too restricting.

    If the modular cases were empty and you could insert your own choice of HW that would be cool as all get out, BUT THEY ARE NOT!! There won’t even be any other manufacturers providing HW for this.. just Razor.

    ..And because of all this.. the price will be daylight buggery.

    Whilst this will not be massive, it sure does look cool.

    AS FAR AS COOLING GOES GUYS!

    My thoughts judging by the pictures seems that the whole system is water cooled.

    Much like a closed loop cooler is (like the H100, NZXT, etc).

    The bottom where the PSU goes is a fill port, and a water level indicator.

    My guess is there is a pump near this that will allow water to flow up the middle pillar of the system and into the main bay areas (CPU, GPU, MOBO CHIPSET, heck even the RAM AND HDD’s as well).

    Inside each of the bays will be a cold plate, or more commonly known as copper block that the water will filter through and cool down.

    My guess is that the bays will have two comparments, 1 for the actual component and other for the water block area that will ALWAYS remain sealed. The water will flow up the tower and into the copper plates cooling the system down without the need to ever change the water it self.

    If this is true THIS is very impressive!

    @7 True, but someone has to start somewhere, and if this catches on then standards will be set, and other PC part manufacturers may well go down this path – if it works.

    But then all we end up with is a bunch of seperate companies putting out proprietory HW that cannot be used together.

    It’s an unworkable “market” initiative, everyone trying to do their own thing in a saturated market? No-one would succeed with a business model like that.

    The only way this would make it as a viable product is if the modular boxes were empty.. or at the very least filled with off the shelf parts.

    It’s DOA otherwise… Nice idea, not to mention shit-hot looking, but DOA nevertheless.

    Maybe the “slides” contain off the shelf parts? You open one up, plug in the component (I.e. a graphic card), close the slide then plug it into the rig?

    No. It’s all proprietary. Separate components (slides/blocks) which don’t work with ANYTHING else except compatible HW and you’ll only find that from this range of products.

    I’m fairly sure that something like this is going to be the future, but it needs to be a standardised thing. Interconnectivity is going to be the next great technological innovation.
