Mass Effect 4 is recognisable, despite all the changes

Monday, 23rd December 2013 15:56 GMT By Dave Cook

Mass Effect 4 developer BioWare has repeatedly stressed that it doesn’t want a simple repeat of Shepard’s adventures in the new title, but it has recently confirmed that the game will still be recognisable enough for series fans.

It follows word that Mass Effect 4 is currently in a playable state.

The studio also told me last year that it doesn’t want Mass Effect 4′s hero to simply be ‘Shepard 2.’ See what they said through the link.

Now, Aaryn Flynn, GM for BioWare’s Edmonton & Montreal studios had this to say:

Such a tease isn’t it?

I want to see a prequel when the Protheans were in their prime.

Yeah it’s going to be a simple TPS with wheel dialog system that will have blue or red choices with the story and characters that are ripped off from other Sci-fi movies and books. Nothing new.

I hope it isn’t a prequel. The idea of a prequel is terrible. It shows a lack of creativity on the writers’ part.

“You know how it all ends, you know how that end began, now let’s see how that beginning began!”

    /facepalm

Let’s move the story forward a couple hundred years. Get away from this reaper business, let all the characters die, and let’s really start to dig into these races and the rich ME universe.

No side stories either. Get away from the story ME 1-3 told and get as far away as possible. It’s over. Done. Moving on.

Some space combat wouldn’t go amiss.

I just hope is a sequel, or even better a reboot as any prequel or game set mid or parallel to Shep’s story would be ruined (for me) knowing our charters are heading for the train wreck of plot holes and retcon they called mass 3, and then mass 3′s mess of an ending of course.

you have to work and use the computer and internet, and if you can do that and dedicate some time each day then you can do this with no problem. I have been working with this for a month and have made over 1957 bucks already. let me know if you need more help. http://bit.do/fHpz

A prequel doesn’t actually sound too bad since we still don’t really know how the Reapers were formed and by who. Maybe they could take us back to when they were formed and we see the reason for their creation.

Maybe we’ll end up understanding that the Reapers were right. That would be one HELL of a mindfuck. Spend three games trying to kill Reapers and then you have to create the Reapers yourself to stop destruction.

That would be cool. A prequel could be good if done right and a sequel could be good if done right.

I would also bet that they are going to take their sweet time polishing the shit out of this.

Since they probably don’t want another epic shitstorm that was the ME3 ending crisis, then they will most likely test the game into the ground until the testers’ fingers fall off and buff that story till it shits Academy awards.

Lets hope EA doesn’t mess this one up and that the wait is well worth it. Here’s t you guys. Keelah Se’lai!

I’m actually surprised that it’s never crossed anyone’s mind that a First Contact War game would be unlikely. The only way you could sell that to the mainstream is by being able to decide the war and the key points of how it was won or lost. However, those are accurately recorded by historians, thus taking any choices out of the hands of the players.

All it would be, if it were that, would be Battlefield: Mass Effect Edition. Personally, I don’t want that.

The testing is pretty irrelevant in regards to ME3′s ending…I mean it was a poor creative choice not something that could be sorted out by QA testing :/

Prequels are lazy ad they suck. If you want to do a sequel to a game/book/film and you can’t think of what comes next, don’t do one.

Anyone can read the last page of a book and write what happened the page before.

It’s still about the ME3 ending. I know people are tired of discussing it. But the truth is, it totally turned me off for any more Mass Effect game. The plot holes, the feel of a rushed work.

And more importantly are EA/Bioware’s reaction: artistic integrity, their friendly media criticizing the complainers as “entitled crybabies”, etc.

EA/Bioware thought there were protecting the franchise by these “damage control” work. But in fact they helped destroy it furthermore.

We will see how damaged the IP is when this iteration is released otherwise it’s just the “crybabies” screaming doom and gloom for the franchise.

@18 The humiliation game began again. This is exactly why the damage to ME never ends.

What´s wrong with ME3? Was the best ME by far. You ARE entitled cry babies. Nobody gives a shit about your end plotholes, it was a fitting end for Sheppard. If you want Plotholes, watch the glorious Star Wars Empire Strikes back. Cry Babies. And for good measure, your mama throws bigger Shadows than Reapers.

In my opinion BioWare is going to capitalize on the romance aspect of ME series. Players will be able to create a protagonist of any species depending on who Shepard romanced in previous trilogy. The new protagonist will be Shepards child.
