PlayStation “more committed to new IP” than rivals, says CEO

Wednesday, 18 December 2013 00:33 GMT By Brenna Hillier

PlayStation CEO Andrew House believes Sony pushed harder for new IP than other platform holders.

Speaking to MCV, House said that although the PS4′s launch line-up is light on new properties, early adopters know they can trust Sony to deliver in that regard.

“I do think that the early consumer is going to buy in if they sense that there is a roadmap of great content that is going to come down the pipe, and you have cited some of those games that have been announced, which are also brand new IP, which I think is critically important,” he said.

“We are more committed to new IP establishment and delivery than most other platform holders out there.”

Thanks, CVG.

Its funny because you do this on all Sony articles but when it comes to MS not even a murmur about their arrogance.

On topic: This is why I bought a PS4 because SOny has always had more new and original IPs than MS. MS just buys timed exclusives and DLCs acting like a trust fund baby with no restrictions. “We don’t need IPs we just buy them from publishers and we will be fine.”

    #4 1 year ago
  5. Dragon

    Thats how he is.

I have to agree with you. The main reason why I buy PS products now is that they aren’t afraid to invest in new IPs unlike their competition.

  6. Francis O

Yeah, cause Knack and Beyond Two Souls were amazing.

Sony should be more committed to BETTER GAMEPLAY, because the quality of their titles are not always good.

Knack sucked, Beyond Two Souls sucked, Killzone Shadow Fall was average. And GT6 isn’t that great.

People are buying the PS4 for Call of Duty Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed 4, and FIFA, not Sony’s first party games.

And where is all that commitment to the Vita? Where are all the new IPs for that? You got Tearaway……and thats it.

    #6 1 year ago
  7. Junior

@FRANCIS O, that is actually your opnion on knack and b2s. I hate shooters so I enjoyed Knack as did the rest of my family.

I never played a quantic dream game. I tried B2S demo and hated. it. Since I had to buy the game for a friend, I played it and loved it. I spent two weeks before that playing puzzles and adventure games. I got burnt out. B2S was the game to calm my nerves.

Yes, their games arent always stellar but they are at least average and enjoyable at the right time.

    #7 1 year ago
  8. Major Mayhem 70

This is why I bought both systems. Both systems have great exclusives. As far as timed exclusives, I want to be able to play it without waiting for it longer than I have to. In other words, I commit to games not consoles, experience not bragging rights. GoW probably means God of War to many, when in actuality GoW has two meanings. Gears of War is the other. Both are great exclusives, both I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. I understand that not everyone can afford both consoles, so just enjoy the one you purchased.

I don’t think anyone can deny that out of the three console makers, Sony is the most committed to new ip’s. Some are great (Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Journey) and some I couldn’t give a fuck about (Playstation All Stars, Knack), but Sony are never afraid to try something new. The only franchise they’ve ever milked to hell and back is Ratchet & Clank, which I think has 900 titles over 2 gens right now.

But it’s one of the things that I think has always been a positive in Sony’s favor. They don’t just take the same five franchises and do endless sequels to them, which would have been incredibly easy to do, as another company I can think of has been using the same characters for 30 years now.

There’s no arrogance in the truth. Uncharted, infamous, resistance, heavy rain, tear away, beyond 2 souls, soul sacrifice, Ragnorok odyssesy, gravity rush, PAS, demon souls, knack, drive club, order 1866, warhawk, starhawk, heavenly sword (which I hope is a strong focus this gen like GoW was last), journey, star dust, the last of us, hyper dimension games, all brand new franchise that compliment the brands legacy.

It’s why I personally have been drawn towards Sony devices because they never try to rely heavily on bating my nostalgia. They show me exactly what I want. New worlds and new experiences.

I’m playing catch up on a few titles I never finished on 360 now. But I realized very few and in between do I have to play that’s exclusive to the machine.

Surely it’s easier to refine a good IP if you release it a million times (Mario) than having the same group of people, like Naughty Dog for example making 4 series over 3 platforms and trying new things.
Crash was insanely innovative at the time.
Jak went to experiment with open worlds.
Uncharted has given some of the best moments in gaming in the last 5 years.
(Didn’t played TLOU because I’m broke now)

If Naughty Dog made 9 Crash Bandicoots in the meanwhile, the gameplay would be perfect but it would get as boring as Mario.

If I must say my opinion the Ratchet & Clank games on PS2 have been vastly superior and more fun to the 3D Marios released up to the Wii.

Anyway Sony DOES give the userbase a choice.

Sony is right. Last gen they definitely had the better selection of IP’s. I am also sure that they will have a brilliant variety on this generation.

All I would hope is that Sony would have waited until more games, at least Infamous, has been released on the PS4 before they make this comment. Making it at this point seems arrogant as there is no exclusive system seller released yet on the PS4.

    #22 1 year ago
  23. Dendroball

@17 Except Halo is not a yearly release and above all Sony is also doing the exclusive/timed exclusive DLC trick with Ubisoft (for the AC series), EA (for BF3) for example and I guess we’ll see some sort of the same thing with Bungie’s next title Destiny. So yeah choose your arguments wisely, saying ignorant things while thinking you’re right doesn’t make look good.

Sony does have a good track record encouraging new IP – games like Journey, Unfinished Swan on current gen (along with AAA like Last of Us, Uncharted, Motorstorm, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Infamous, LBP) – all of that IP was created on PS3.

On 360 (while I think the games were actually better), Crackdown, Alan Wake and Gears of War seem to be the only MS-published new core IP this gen. Forza, Fable, Halo all old (though like I said, better) IP.

i couldn’t care less about new ip’s if sony wont take care about many of their existing ones again for a change. who needs new ip’s if they aren’t handled well after a few releases? there was a huge drop in quality in so many of them in the last few years. it actually really made me lose trust in the brand. resistance, ratchet, uncharted card game and ga, even the new sly was no improvement and so many more, even gow. kzsf…then there have been new ip’s that i found very mediocore like gravity rush, all star battle royal and many more. knack doesn’t seem to be that great either but i haven’t played it yet. i know this pisses a lot of the more platform loyal sony guys off but that’s just how i feel. sure, there are the tearaways and last of uss’ as well but i would love to see less from sony but what’s there in their old quality instead. i know many will disagree or even write this off as me bashing sony, but it’s not the case. they sell a lot of ps4s atm, everything looks good for them right now and i still worry the most about them because i believe they need to focus much more again. on quality. i think they’re having a severe software quality problem and with ps+ and gamers all over the world buying into the ps4 as ‘the best place to play gr8tness’ marketing crap finally, i can only see things getting worse from here. but well, we’ll have the great exclusives too like infamous, maybe even another demons souls. maybe all you got to do is skipping the trash but i still don’t believe that this is the right way. less can be so much more.
no need to be proud of having the most new ip’s if many of them are such a mixed bag.
scratch the surface. play the competition. compare. realize.

edit: i’m not worrying much about them financially, that’s a very different discussion. i worry about them as a gamer who wants new ip’s to be actually worth my money AND my time.

@28 This DRM has existed since the Xbox 360.

It’s only a problem if you play a digital title on a different machine than the one you originally bought it on, and even then only if you’re not connected to the Internet. The organiser of the event should have organised things better.

The PS3 / PS4 only allows you to register two consoles, and after that you can’t download your digital titles on any other machines. So its system isn’t much better. They both have upsides and downsides, and are less or more restrictive depending entirely on your circumstances.

That article is the epitome of click baiting. Who cares about objectivity when you can just fuel ignorance instead?

    Biased fanboyism, FTL.

Is this the future of “the power of cloud” on XBONE?
i Guess its the same BONE as the one they showed at the unveiling.
    DRM is a switch away

as for first party studios at least Sony is experimenting and trying, but they have not gone as far as the travesty with RARE, the prestige game studio now reduced to a hollow shell of its former glory, not even nintendo would like to buy them back. They even drove Bungie right into the arms of Sony. the exodus of high profile the last months

The Order is the only game I have my eye on at the moment (PS4). Infamous looks okay, but I didn’t really like 1 or 2 so I can’t see the third one appealing to me that much.

I would have to echo other people’s comments, I think it’s great that Sony attempt new stuff, it just doesn’t always work. This gen it doesn’t matter either way for them, they have what looks to be the strongest console for third party, that’s where the real meat is.

I guess this thread is the result of absence of moderation here, as long as MS or in this case Sony’s whatever allegation trying to make look bad its competitor is mentioned, we just can’t have a real conversation here as it constantly devolves into a frenzy of shitposts, even if some offer a decent participation (you have to look for their posts in this mess!).

We get it some have opinions and that’s cool but how can we discuss anything if everytime an article is published, some dudes are coming in force to trash the other console they hate (fair criticism is fine by me though but sometimes it’s too much to ask it seems).

“I think it’s great that Sony attempt new stuff, it just doesn’t always work.”

I don’t care if it doesn’t always work. The very fact that they attempt it is the important bit. Where I am now I get more fun and enjoyment from a title which tries something different and doesn’t quite work than one which very, very competently even excellently does something they’ve done before.

It’s far easier to say that something doesn’t work when it’s already out in the open.

You can’t exactly tell how something is going to pan out until you try. Sometimes it’s an Unfinished Swan, sometimes it’s an incredible Journey.
For every Knack that came out of Sony’s doorstep, there’s also a Puppeteer.
And sometimes things like Tokyo Jungle pop out of nowhere that you can’t help but admire the executives that gave it a green light.

Get rich or die tryin’ brah.

Oh man all you people that love new IP must love gaming on the PC then!! Its filled with new titles all the time!

…oh, oh wait this is just a console wanking thread and this comment from Sony is just being used to one up the competition and not really about games at all.

You are kind of missing the point. It’s not consoles vs PC or even console manufacturer vs console manufacturer. The comment was made about Sony as a publisher and developer.

I wonder when people will realize how bothered they get by Sony. Almost like their ps2 fell on their baby kitten. If looking at the track record of Sony since ps1 they have always created new images to fit their current business model. To me that’s awesome, to others they just hate it.

Most people hate it though because they nostalgia isn’t there. It doesn’t give them that warm feeling they had when they were a child. Unfortunately some people also need to remove the beer goggles and see the donkey they are trying to sleep with.

Oh my! What do i see here?

Cherry-picking New IPs Published/Made by Sony that were not critically acclaimed to suit your agenda. Amazing. I suppose leaving out Tearaway, TLOU, Uncharted, Gravity Rush, The Order 1886, Resogun, Puppeteer, Soul Sacrifice also fits into another agenda, albeit one without cherrypicking.

I can understand a few titles in that list but all of them? No, no, no Poly you just have to accept the fact that those games do not lack quality, they are simply games you do not enjoy/like. You already been called on what you said about the Uncharted/TLOU. “knack doesn’t seem to be that great either but i haven’t played it yet.” So have we chucked out the if you haven’t played it you cannot judge it regime?

My point: Their commitment to New IPs overall sure nothing wrong with that. Their commitment to New IPs on PS4 we are not there yet. Their commitment to Quality New IPs which is debatable.

We all know how much of a well received Classic Wii Fit U is, right?

    Right ?

Both Sony and Nintendo have a great selection of exclusive brands that make both machines were buying, if they’re you sort of thing. They also both have their own share of duds.

We cannot call it arrogance but a fact at least level and if not a vision to help boost game industry.
It was stated across months and months and from various IP that gamers are getting tired of same’o, perhaps Sony is going in the right direction?!?!

Agreed, and it is always a blessing! Though do not forget AAA already in place, they always pull a new a card out of their sleeve,it is just to y opinion and understanding they try to milk too hard, too fast, and for too long in some cases. Meanwhile other IPs do not come fast enough such as what is mentioned for Nintendo with what is it called… Bayonetta or something like that. Others have a good stride and pace to my sole opinion such as The witcher, DA (if they did not screw up with mechanics it would still be stellar), and many others.
So the bottom line is that to me AAA devers need to feel and understand a good pace is a strong pace where you cash in for longer period of time and not necessarily as much as you can in shorter time. Which is best is still to be discovered… :)

@45 has a strong point, especially at the end regarding quality and only time will tell.

Can’t hate them for stating facts. I’m not getting into the PS3/360 war owning both consoles and liking their exclusives, but this is just 100% true.

YES not every new IP will work. For every failure like Lair and Haze on the PS3 comes a Too Human and Kameo on the 360. In every list of critically acclaimed games this gen and GOTYs since the 7th gen, I always see a PS3 IP in the list somewhere (Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War).

Nintendo is still resting on its laurels on the same damn franchises over the past 30 years, and there’s only so much timed-exclusivity you can have before I want to play something your console will never get to experience.
