PS4 shortage: being unable to sell consoles to consumers ‘breaks my heart,’ says Tretton

Tuesday, 17 December 2013 12:36 GMT By Dave Cook

PlayStation 4 appears to be in short supply in North America, according to comments from PlayStation US boss Jack Tretton. The exec appeared on an official Sony podcast and stated that it breaks his heart to turn paying consumers away.

You can listen to the recording over at PS Blog US, during which Tretton said, “You have competition out there. There are lots of things that people can spend money on, especially during the holidays; and the holidays only come around once a year, so that’s really when you want to take advantage of the market opportunity…It breaks my heart if somebody’s got $400 in their hand and they want one and we can’t sell them one.”

Meanwhile in Europe, PlayStation’s Andrew House stated that PS4 will be in “good supply” over the holiday season.

It follows claims that Sony has been holding PS4 stock back, a rumour that Tretton denounced during his interview.

What do you make of the above?

    Foxconn makes almost every popular electronics nowadays because it’s the only way to achieve an affordable consumer price tag.

    If people want to pull the Foxconn card, then they should all quit being gamers and ditch our iphones instead of being internet paladins.

    Obviously, not a single one of us would even come close to doing it. You don’t want Foxconn? Prepare to pay close to $1000 dollars for consoles.

    Yeah man you keep posting that minus link.
    Link would be good.
    Last time I checked amazon the 1 was ahead in charts. may not have been uk.

    Personally I think 1 is selling ok but 4 is selling out.
    I just think 4 has the edge or else MS are stocking better but I would imagine if that was the case MS would be bragging about it.

    Not too pushed on either yet myself as neither has many games but hey its good for the crack.

    Just to add to this.
    I live in Ireland and where I work there are about 20 gamers out of 80 workforce.
    Not 1 has gotten either.
    I reckon come January there will be plenty of stock of both.

    Just saying as the next gen has been pretty unspectacular thus far and I imagine early adopters of both have already run out of things to do with them.

    But hey we need the beta testers to iron out both so we can decide which one if any really has an edge.

    That’s funny, I speak positively and negatively of both camps. I posted about 20 comments criticising Sony a fortnight ago. You had no problem with any of that. Then I made one fleeting negative reference to an XBox game and suddenly you were outraged and condemned me as a Sony troll from the SDF who hates on MS. Says everything that you choose to focus on one side and not the other, so run along.

    @31

    Waiting a reply? This from the person who inferred I was making it all up. I’d rather trust a “best selling product now” list than a nebulously titled and undefined “new releases” list. And the “best selling of 2013″ list doesn’t lie. No ambiguity there.

    EDIT: You are a moron. You’ve gone to the US site. Did I post the US site? No.

  40. Cort

    @38

    I pointed out the fact that on Amazon *UK* the PS4 is outselling the XB1 by what appears to be a wide margin. Posting a link from a market in a different country does not disprove that. If I had claimed the PS4 is outselling the XB1 in the US or globally then you might have actually had a point. But I didn’t, so you don’t.

    “Please point out were I said you were making it up.”

    Inferred, not said.

    “When you degenerate to name calling you have lost the argument.”

    Said the person who branded me a fanboy based on nothing more than the false claim of a third party. Don’t lecture people until you can swallow your own advice.

  41. reask

    OK then I apoligise for calling you that but it just appears that you are posting numbers on a site where both are sold out.

    Yet I posted the same info from another site in a different country which are sold out also.
    I mean you did say where is the price cut meaning I can only assume you think the 1 needs it.

    #41 1 year ago
  42. Cort

    @41 And I apologise for using “moron”.

    Both are sold out, but both can still be ordered, so it is reasonable anecdotal data to consider side-by-side. Last time I looked, the XB1 has an expected delivery date (8 January) whereas the PS4 does not.

    I can’t speak for the US market. But it is becoming increasingly possible that the XB1, after a good start, is stalling in Europe. A price cut will help. At 349, I’d buy one, and I don’t even have a PS4 yet (before Hcw87 performs another one of his hysterical condemnations).

    #42 1 year ago
  43. reask

    @42
    I actually agree with you that 4 seems to be the preferred console atm but I just think the 1 is holding it,s own and in that scenario when the early adopters settle down it will come down to word of mouth on how both are performing.

    In my opinion Sony went for the powerhouse gaming rig and MS went for the all in one box.
    Who is right we will only know down the road.
    I kinda like the gimmicky things on the 1 but am not sure they will be any more than that yet at the same time am not sure if Sony stayed safe after last gen.

    Just my honest opinion and nothing else but both are vying for our hearts and minds and both look to be doing OK.
