PS4 UK launch: sales hit £87 million in 48 hours, over 250k consoles sold

Monday, 2nd December 2013 10:23 GMT By Dave Cook

PlayStation 4 has outsold its rival Xbox One in the UK so far, according to data release by aggregation Chart-Track.

It follows confirmation that PS4 is now the UK’s fastest-selling console, overtaking the PSP record set in 2005.

Now, MCV reports that PS4 has made £87 million in the UK in just 48 hours at retail, amounting to 250,000 unit sales.

By comparison, the site places Xbox One sales at 150,000 for the 48 hours after it launched.

What do you make of the above?

    That’ll shut people up.

One company fumbled the reveal the other didn’t. One company speaks directly to gamers the other to gamers and a wider audience.

Hardcore gamers and tech aficionados are the ones purchasing these devices as such these starting numbers are meaningless since the true impact is only made evident once the general public begins to purchase.

That’s what I make of it. What do you make of it?

Don’t underestimate early adopters, my friend. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

It was the early adopters that prapelled Xbox 360 to where it was when PS3 launched in the UK.

Wow, I was expecting 200k to 210k at best. Really hope this trend continues, not only for PS4 but also for XB1 (150k isn’t bad bay any means).

    @kap I’m not underestimating anything.

Gamers not being happy with the Wii didn’t stop the general public from buying them by the dozen.

The fact is the general public buys what it buys. Gamers can’t do much about it.

I think it’s great, that means maybe first and third party developers will take more risk to make new IPs for both platforms and we can finally put to rest the tired ass ones that we keep seeing like fucking COD…

Congratulations to PS4 and X1, SONY and Microsoft have done great work in these years, they deserve such a huge success.

@5, The difference is the Wii was much cheaper with a vastly different audience. The xbox one is more expensive with a very similar audience- just orientated a little more towards multimedia but the end multimedia support will be very similar again.

The main gaming audience for both consoles will be the typical bloke who buys CoD, NFS & Fifa/NFL along with a handful of other games every year. The only difference being exclusives which will be a deciding factor for many- don’t underestimate Gran Turismo or Halo.

Overall I think price will sway this war into Sony’s favour. The issue with the Wii U is it’s a current gen console with some neat features that doesn’t know it’s audience. Those interested in tablets will buy a vastly superior iPad or Android tablet. It’s too expensive to be considered for the original Wii’s main audience & due to current gen limitations will never have the availability or sparkles of next gen games that the core demand. In the end you only have those mesmerized by Nintendo’s franchises coming back which remains a fairly significant number but still well short of what it needs to be commercially successful.

I guess mentioning ps4 outsold the wii u ltd in the uk in 24 hours in the article could incite a war of epic proportions :P

If the xbox1 had more to sell it would have sold the same.. sold out is sold out. . A bunch of lame sony jockeys on this site. . Btw I have both and I pkay xbox1 the most

@10, That’s just plain untrue. If anything despite the greater sales it seems that it’s going to be harder to find PS4 stock worldwide. Sony was clearly more prepared but still neither prepared enough.

‘One has to wonder how much availability had to play a part in this since the X1 has been largely sold out since launch and the PS4 has not.’

@10: Actually the XboxOne is not outsold at all. Merchants are even selling them under retail price to minimize losses, Microsoft got their “day-1″ editions back and now resells them. On the other hand, PS4s are outsold everywhere, people even swtiched to Xbox Ones on black friday, as there were no PS4s left and over E-Bay, there are 10-times as much PS4s sold than XboxOnes far above the retail price, while the XboxOnes are sold for less than the retail price.

G1GAHURTZ: Did you just quote freedoms_stain (http://www.vg247.com/2013/12/01/xbox-one-xbox-360-most-popular-black-friday-consoles-at-target-walmart-report/#comment-568587) and exchanged the words PS4 and XboxOne?

The PS4 is not sold out, I don’t get why people are saying it is? All weekend there’s been the “super bundles” made-up by retailers that include a whole load of crap for like £600.

It is quite funny seeing how everyone is pretty much proclaiming the generation over and won. Never mind the fact that the PS3 only outsold the 360 in the last year or so of the generation.

I don’t see how this is any different to the last gen in terms of one console having a heftier price tag and a slower start. They’ve both done really well and should both continue to do well.

@23 – Okay, really, you’re comparing the Wii U to Fugazi?!? The safest, most family-friendly console is who you’re comparing a eclectic post-punk band to?!? Sure, Ian Mackaye is all, “Don’t mosh everybody, it gives me a sad,” but he’s hardly being marketed as being fun for the whole family.

    Bush won two elections.

    Popularity speaks nothing of quality.

That being said, I’m in no way against the PS4, just against using numbers as some sort of proof of it’s worth. Same goes for X-zamboni.

Apples and oranges are the same thing, just as long as it serves my point – nuff said.

I find it very hilarious how any ninty fans on this site have come to an enlightening conclusion that their choice is better and makes more sense than their general gaming populace of the entire world.
I am quite sure sales was a good thing and world was a better and more sensible place for them when Wii was selling well. Oh how times have changed….

With a small library of games, no backwards compatibility and no mentionable games in the near future I’m surprised so many people buy the PS4 or Xbox One. Both consoles will be collecting dust for months.

I don’t know where everyone lives, but in Vancouver EVERY SINGLE store is sold out of PS4 with on average ~60 more preorders to fill. How do I know? Because I can’t bloody find one lol.

Xbox Ones are still available a the local retailers. That doesn’t say much about the overall, but I assure you at least where I live the Xbox is not doing that well.
