    That’s quite a drop in Vita TV sales, ouch!

    I suppose the Mario 3D World sales aren’t bad considering there are hardly any Wii U’s in Japan.

    My response to this news is twofold.

    One: The sales numbers for the game aren’t that high out the gate compared to other games people are dying to get, and right now the competition for sales is extremely slim. It’s not too much of a surprise that the game is at the top of the charts given the lack of options.

    Two: This is Japan. These are the same people that gave garbage like 3rd Birthday and FFX-2 the majority of their sales and managed to give Squeenix enough of a platform to somehow claim both of those games are among the greatest hits on their respective systems. It was fairly inevitable that the obsessive horny otaku element in Japan would rush out to buy a game that’s all about taking a woman and making her dress in various goofy or sexualized outfits.

    AMEN @Salarta
    The game is disgusting. Cosplay bullshit… I dont have to play it to tell its shit already.

    Im stubborn as fuck. Still waiting on FFXV and KH3. Some people here said it would be on current gen as well but that is not correcto mundo.

    This might seem like a lot but for a Final Fantasy these are some shitty sales figures. To compare FF13 sold around 1.5 million in it’s first week in Japan, FF13-2 sold around 500k in that time.

    Nobody gives a shit about Lightning returning. Its the fact that she beated mario -> [Wii U] Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo, 11/21/13) – 99,588 (New)

    Sad news :(

    Well as little people care about LR, just as few people care about the WiiU. This isn’t a problem with the game but the system it’s on.

    Look at the bright side, at least LR does not win the award for most perverted JRPG ever. That probably goes to Time and Eternity.

    I think Japan is bizarre. Where else Vita can be 2nd best selling console? As for Lightening Returns, it’s rather low for the series. Mario doesn’t need to worry. Nintendo games have legs.

    At least Time and Eternity is honest about it. LR just tries to hide the fact that Toriyama wants Lightning to be his Fanfic Waifu. I mean have you seen this? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BaBhKhvCIAAUueq.jpg:large

    The Vita is selling in Japan because over there there are actually games coming out for it. And now with all the Indie titles on over here the sales are looking better in the west too.

    @8: I agree with what @9 (MrFutago87) said. Super Mario 3D World is suffering not from lack of interest in the game, but lack of people that own the console and think it’s a worthwhile purchase.

    I’m actually interested in Super Mario 3D World myself. It looks fun. But there’s literally nothing else on the system that I want to play, and I learned from the Wii and 3DS, as well as Nintendo of America’s initial refusal to bring over the Operation Rainfall games, that it’s a mistake to buy any Nintendo system until there are about five games for it I actually want to play. With the Wii, there was one game per year worth buying and playing until the Operation Rainfall games (and I’m not totaling and dividing, there was literally only one game per year). If I had bought the Wii U at launch like I did for Wii and 3DS, it would’ve sat completely unused for a whole year before Super Mario 3D World finally came out and let me feel like I hadn’t wasted my money on something I don’t use.

    @11: I still need to play my copy of Time and Eternity. I didn’t see anything perverted about it from previews. Is it really worse than FFX-2 and this crap? Any examples of how it’s worse?

    @13: There’s supposedly one of Lightning wearing a clown suit. To be honest, when it comes to Lightning as a character, I figure that since it’s obvious Toriyama purposely tried to ruin Aya Brea to prevent her from stealing the spotlight of badass female protagonist from his precious Lightning, it would only be fair once Lightning is depicted as innately pathetic and wussy like he had Aya depicted. But at the same time, I also know that since Lightning is a female character, poor treatment of her is basically poor and disrespectful representation of women in general.

    @13: When SE had dlc of costumes showing more of Serah’s cleavage in XIII-2, that’s where they started to cross the line. I wonder who are the sickos who actually download that.

    @14: Time and Eternity gets perverted 30 seconds after hitting the “New Game” button.

    @15: That doesn’t answer my question. :P

    Also, the sickos are also known as horny otaku, which apparently Japan is swimming in since a once respected company like Squeenix is eager to sink low enough to cater almost exclusively to them with games like FFX-2, 3rd Birthday and this. Any reasonable company would’ve aborted this game and demoted Toriyama years ago, not allowed him to carry on and ruin multiple IPs for a good decade yet somehow fail upward in status.

    @20: Another ten years and nobody will know that reference!

    I downloaded the Japanese FF demo yesterday and was left unimpressed and uninterested. I may be the only one outside of Square Enix that likes Lightning, but I’m just not felling it.

    time and resources spent on an abysmal project that only a handful of people care about.I wonder what these guys at Squenix are really smoking.

    “it’s a mistake to buy any Nintendo system” until such time as you can be sure of a steady train of appealing titles releasing/to be released for it.
    I’ve seen their inconsistent strategy, the flagpole release that they try to make all the noise about – leading to a “dry spell” – in reality, a drought of content lasting seasons. Which just speaks to terrible planning. Awful organization? And, it’s no good “online enabling” your console, when you fail to support key modern protocols to the point that any-which-way I try I’m not getting my Wii machine to access the internet, since the necessary driver support apparently evaporated overnight!

    If I am to buy a Nintendo, I can count on NOT being able to play the games that I want to – If only Freeloader had woken up more than just their OS coders! – and, much like the flagpole releases, it takes some ABSURD degree of grandstanding gesture to get through that: Guess what? People actually want to buy, support and play this stuff, (that they want to play, which (Nintendo) YOU DON’T REALISE, because you don’t care. Nintendo they’re not interested, frankly))

    If they were interested, they wouldn’t have a choking greenhouse effect for a console ecosystem. They might actually support their development and publishing partners rather than leaving them in no-mans-land to fend for themselves. Iwata asks: When It Suits Iwata.

    So, yes…In the WiiU’s case, that might well be a while then.

    @Stephany
    I can understand Francis a bit. The headline can be considered as ‘troll bait’ because of the emphasis on the fact that LR sold much more than Mario. Instead of giving a plain sales chart.

    @28: Nintendo’s only real saving grace at the moment is that it has some very famous first party IPs that are usually made very well, and sometimes they have some damn good companies making games for them.

    Outside that, they’re a complete mess. They’re now a constant decade behind the competition in graphics and online functionality (both of which hamper ports and make companies less eager to make games for them when the competition has more options to offer), and their content restrictions both for what kind of games Nintendo will let developers publish through them and for what their own consumers are allowed to do on the console are absurdly limiting.

    Operation Rainfall was something of a wake-up call on this issue. Three games consumers actually wanted, and it took a massive internet campaign to get Nintendo of America to actually acknowledge it was what consumers wanted. I’m glad they eventually listened, but it shouldn’t have taken that kind of massive campaign.

    The other issue is that Nintendo used to be able to have a slow trickle of first party games when they were the dominant company and they got the same multi-platform games as the competition alongside some really good exclusive third-party games. Now, they’re at a state where they need to have multiple first-party games out in a short window. That’s the only way left to really sell people on their consoles, because it’s the only way to let consumers feel like buying it would mean getting their money’s worth.
