Torment: Tides of Numenera combat system goes to a vote

Torment: Tides of Numenera developer inXile Entertainment is unsure if it should keep the RPG’s combat turn-based in real-time, or if it should employ a pause system. It’s invited all of the game’s Kickstarter backers to vote on the matter.

It follows my massive interview with inXile, in which we discuss the game’s plot, Tides system, combat and much more. If you’re a fan, you should get on this one.

Voting on the matter was confirmed in this blog update, during which the team explained that it’s pondering either a ‘Real Time with Pause (RTwP)’ system, similar to Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, or a fully turn-based system like XCOM: Enemy Unknown or Final Fantasy 7, to give a few examples.

The blog post goes into detail on how both formats should work in Tides of Numenera, but like Highlander, there can only be one.

    It doesn’t really matter. If it’s done right, both RTwP and TB can be fun.

    Fully turn-based.
    Either fully turnbased or fully realtime. I can’t stand everything in between. (Which is why I played Baldur’s Gate for probably a whopping 30 minutes or so and didn’t even try Dragon Age)
