Nintendo teases VGX announcement, new Witcher 3 video to shown during broadcast

Friday, 22nd November 2013 20:02 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Here’s a quick one for you: Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime is set to make an appearance during Spike TV’s Video Game Awards. During last night’s episode of GameTrailers TV Fils-Aime even teased the firm “may have something special” to announce, “we’ll see.” For the non-Nintendo crowd, it was also confirmed a new trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will also debut at VGX. Thanks, Gematsu.

    I hope Nintendos appearance is related to something about Monolith Softs X. I’m playing Xenosgaga EIII again right now (this time in HD) and it’s still the best game of all time.

    Oh dear, I was hoping they wouldn’t be that desperate to pander to the screaming baboon demographic that usually comprises the vast majority of the VGA/VGX audience

    Is Nintendo FINALLY starting to change? I mean really, this is the first time I’ve ever seen them participate in stuff like VGAs.

    Desperate times call for desperate measures, i guess?

    Nintendo must be really frustrated right now with both of the more expensive consoles selling over 1 million in 24 hours. Shows that console demand is still up and that people clearly wanted an advancement in tech.

    The poor WiiU sales are purely down to a lack of interest in their product and nothing else seeing as we’re being shown that the console market has never been in better shape.

    Yes.
    I distinctly remember a hardcore Ninty fan on this site giving a prophesy that based on Wii U, PS4 and X1 will fail. He also reiterated how he has been always right.

    Any guesses on who the guy is?

    That’s a super optimistic and perhaps even naive article. There are some valid points but it is also ignoring many important changes that WILL ruin anyone who’s unwilling to change.

    It says people shouldn’t worry but here’s the thing: Worry is exactly what Nintendo fans should do. Yamauchi is the man that could turn a dead bird into a successful console but guess what? He’s gone (RIP). His replacement? Iwata is the man that made Yamauchi lose more than 300 million dollars with bad decisions. Outside GameCube which was a Yamauchi product, Iwata has had one lucky console (Wii) and then nothing.

    3DS is successful because it’s the only handheld that matters. Iwata’s strategy almost ruined that as well. He is about to do the same for Wii U. Sure, maybe some people should change their view of Nintendo but the company and its fans should also do the same. As Dragon said above, there were many Nintendo enthusiasts that believe Wii U’s abysmal sales are indication of bad sales for PS4 and Xbox One. Guess what? They were wrong. PS4 broke records in US and Xone had a phenomenal worldwide launch.

    What did Iwata’s team do? Release its biggest and best Wii U / 3DS games at the exact same time (Zelda ALBW and Mario 3D World).

    Nintendo is definitely frustrated but this is a good move. The biggest problem they are facing is to fade into irrelevancy. EA did a survey about the consoles people use and it didn’t have a Wii U option. Kotaku did an article about how “Start Button” is no longer part of next-gen and was only notified by fans that Wii U still has that.

    Now VGAs (or VGX… uh) are terrible but they are still the most mainstream even outside E3 to show your new games. If great games like The Last of Us and Dark Souls 2 can have their debuts during VGAs, why can’t the next Zelda or Metroid? (At least that’s what I hope. If they go for NSMBU 3 or Luigi 3D World then they might as well stop trying to and go home).

    @9
    It’s really funny how so many Nintendo apologists were saying that Wii U’s failure is due to industry problems and they will fail as well.

    @14: iwata is a great ceo. nintendo games still are of a great quality. i actually think they really are in top form atm softwarewise. mario 3d land and world, link between worlds, luigis mansion, pikmin, fire emblem and so on. nintendo are focussing on what’s most important for them. fun, quality games, new ideas, within their nintendo franchise universe. wiiu might not be as successful as expected (yet) but nintendo keeps going strong with software that is among the very best in the industry. this long term extreme focus of shaping the strengths and not so much looking at the competition, that iwata follows in good nintendo tradition, is what made and keeps nintendo extremely relevant.

    edit: not sure if you’re talking about me, but just for the record: i personally had zero doubt that the x1 and ps4 would sell well. i thought the wiiu would do much much better though and i still think it’s a shame that it doesn’t

    @Red,
    +1. Anyone who thinks Wii U is doing fine and Iwata is doing great is a poor Ninty apologist, like one on this page.

    Its hilarious how platform apologists continue to ignore the writing on the wall, and then type this-
    “i am sick of the neverending sales comparisons, i told you so comments, the failure rate lols, the wiiu is doomed bollocks and so on.”

    Obviously they hate numbers because their poor company isn’t doing well.

    @dragon: i don’t have ‘a poor company’ i am waving a flag for. i’m not like you spyro.

    so it was og and he wanted to have a discussion, chatting about videogames for the fun of it and not for competition.

    you are calling him an apologist. i call you desperate.

    Yeah, as I recall, there was only one person who was saying that gamers would get tired of the PS4/X1, and that the Wii U would start to do better than them, and that wasn’t polygem.

    Keep defending, keep insulting, keep posting useless threads. Just like yesterday and today, everyone on this site knows you are a ninty apologist.

    Their software is not bad. NSMBU and NSMB 2 were lame but overall, Nintendo is still consistently making great games. 3D World has turned out much better than I expected (Was definitely wrong about it) while A Link Between World is perhaps the best Zelda game since A Link to the Past.

    Iwata is the CEO, not creative director or designer. Those people are still doing a top notch work. It’s actually Iwata and management that are ruining their great work. Iwata / Business / planning part pretty much sent Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 to die. Then they decided to release Mario 3D World on the SAME DAY as Xbox One and new Zelda. Who does that!?

    PS: I wasn’t talking about you or anyone specific in terms of “Doomed prophecy”. There were just a lot of these a year ago.

  27. polygem

    @red: i see where you’re coming from but i really think that iwata as a ceo has the long term success of nintendo in focus and he does a great job. it’s not that every descission is right but i love where nintendo are going atm. miiverse is fantastic. the unified accounts are coming, indies are coming, the wiiu is fantastic…but yeah, marketed badly.

    Considering they never usually bother, I would hope their appearance means they have something new to show.

    In reality, it’ll probably be a new trailer for Mario kart or smash bros.

    Witcher 3 looks incredible! Have the specs been released yet?

    The PC is getting a lot of gimped ports at the moment because of next gen development alongside older consoles. AC4 and NFS Rivals being particularly poor.

    Iwata may want the best for Nintendo but he is doing a bad job IMO. Of course I also consider Wii U to be a mistake as a whole and don’t enjoy stuff like Miiverse (Though it is obviously loved by many gamers). It would have been much better if they had either gone with a different console or used a completely different plan for Wii U.

    @monkeygourmet
    Hope not. Mario Kart or Smash Bros would be beyond disappointing. It’s time for something unannounced unless the game in question is X.

    #32 1 year ago
  33. monkeygourmet

    @Red

    X does look fantastic. I always end up disappointed at these things though.

    I would love to see Metriod, Zelda (to see which art style they’ve gone for), Fatal Frame Wii U or obviously a new IP.

    @The_Red: sure, you can definitely look at it like that and it makes sense. my point is that i still think the wiiu isn’t really the failure many are calling it out to be by exclusively looking at the sales charts. maybe nintendo have the hybrid home/console/handheld machine in mind for their next machine. og came up with that a while ago and i think it makes a lot of sense. if that will be happenning the wiiu would have been the perfect gap console for it. bringing the online services up now with wiiu and 3ds is a step in that direction. i also don’t think that the wiiu is giving nintendo a bad reputation despite soso sales if they can manage to keep quality games coming for it. they have a very strong handheld too. while ps4 might sell more than wiiu, the 3ds does better than the vita…but again, i don’t think these sales figures are the ultimate killer argument. not at all. not if you look at all those companies histories. if you do that, i cannot really see a huge problem coming for nintendo. they will be clever enough to sort it out. biggest mistake would be to follow trends though. their biggest strength is their uniqueness.
    lots of if’s, i know and i am not pretending this is how things are…just my 2 cents regarding nintendos current situation.
