EA retracts statement regarding PS4 firmware update 1.50 causing game instability

Friday, 15 November 2013 20:41 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

EA has said the message posted on its EA Help website blaming PlayStation 4′s day-one firmware update causing game instability issues was “posted in error.”

Update:

Speaking with Game Informer, the EA spokesperson recommends layers visit Sony’s website for answers about connectivity and other issues.

Original story as follows:

PS4 firmware update 1.50 is to blame for game instability, according to a post on EA’s help page.

While it appears EA has pulled the page due to the link giving us an error and we can’t seem to get a cached version of the page, Kotaku pulled the entire statement you see below.

“Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation 4 that is required for many features on the console. However, this update also results in stability issues while playing games on the system. This affects all games on the PS4, including EA titles, causing crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections between the player’s console and their TV Screen.

“Unfortunately since it’s an issue with Sony’s firmware, it requires a new update to fix it. Sony is working to resolve the issue as quickly as they can. They will update their System Update page as new versions are made available, and we will keep this page updated as we find out more.”

Apparently some games are a bit buggy or unstable once the firmware has been downloaded and applied.

PS4 was released in North America today and hits store in Europe on November 29.

Boring launch (poor advertising), bland exclusive launch titles, hardware issues, initial PSN errors, and now a patch that screws it all into a nice beta package.

@23 I realize everyone’s having a little fun at Sony’s expense right now, but no need to be unfair. Yes, XBL has had an issue or two here and there, but overall it was very reliable and hasn’t had many issues. PSN has been a pretty consistant nightmare and they really need to make this generation a reset and gain a reputation for reliability. We all remember how long it was down after the credit card debacle. I’ve been happy with XBL since launch, no problems for me.

And “posted in error” =/= “incorrect.” You can’t claim to know whether the info was correct or not unless someone from EA admits it was “incorrect” as opposed to “we shouldn’t have said that.” That may still happen, I don’t know, but that doesn’t change the fact that SO FAR they have blamed Sony and not themselves.

    #27 1 year ago
  28. Erroneus

#25 “a pretty consistant nightmare” Really? Because that’s not the PSN i remember, since the hack scandal. The hack was not optimal for Sony, but it was clear they learned a lot from it and PSN has been running great ever since. Sure they do some maintenance from time to time, but those maintenance doesn’t effect online play, only the store, which people always forgets every single time and are surprised they could play while “psn was down”.

PSN with PS+ has been way better value then Xbox Gold for years now, unless you crave party chat, which never will be possible on PS3.

#26 You are sure? No you are not, you have no clue and are just making wild speculations.

And if there’s ZERO problems (no downtime etc), then it speaks volumes of how shitty PSN is in comparison, considering XB1 has a worldwide launch.

If there are zero problems then I will… Kick the flowerpot outside. Because that shit would be whack.

But it’s impressive that EA would put Sony in this position. First they make the statement. That’s fair game, just telling people to call Sony. But then they pull it, and turn the whole thing into a genuine story.

“Aliens crash in Roswell” – Okay, that’s crazy. “GOVERNMENT DENIES ALIENS IN ROSWELL” – HOLY FUCKING SHIT, LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS FOR HALF A CENTURY AND NEVER LET IT DIE!

^^^ Look how eager Sony fanboys are of attacking the Xbox One like vultures. Sony Defence Force in position.

Microsoft’s checklist for a better launch:
    1. Release games that achieve a rating above 6.0
    2. Release console with working HDMI ports
    3. Avoid Xbox Live network failure day one
    4. Release day one patch that actually works

I sure hope they can manage to beat Sony after they set the bar so high… LOL!

    @77:

Given that they had intended to not have the X1 work at all without being online, it would be pretty stupid of them to not have the infrastructure in place to cope with every single X1 being connected simultaneously.

But sure… Let’s wait and see, shall we?

@83 Can’t wait to see how PS3.5 fanboys complain about their pathetic, decade old network infrastructure. Get ready for ten more years of p2p hacked matches.

At least they can add an external USB HDD when memory runs out… Oh wait, they need to REPLACE their internal HDD, essentially throwing out perfectly good hardware.

Even the Wii U supports external HDDs! LOL!

    #85 1 year ago
  86. DSB

@83 You know, sometimes I think the same thing. “This is so obvious, surely Microsoft knows about it”.

But then I remember that this is the company that launched Windows 8 and fully expected people to still take them seriously.

They spent billions and billions of dollars, just to take Windows 7 and make sure it was absolutely no fucking use to anyone.

It’s so far beyond incompetence, and it would be funny if we didn’t know they were eventually gonna bruteforce people into adopting it.

It’s also the company that invented GFWL, so I mean… Eh. What can’t they fuck up?

    #86 1 year ago

Let’s not forget, the Playstation 4 launched ONLY in NA. Obviously they were not ready for a world-wide launch. Should be interesting to see what happens 11/29.

Shit a bricked PS4 would still be better then a xbone. Who the fuck wants to pay for a box to DVR soap operas so you can watch them with your mom when you get out of school.

$500 dollars = 720P/20 FPS, DVR soap operas, scan QR codes, dance around in front of shit camera that uses 10% of the GPU time slice, magic horse ride kinect adventures, list of shit goes on, PRISM watching you all day through shit camera, 2 exclusive games since you have no first party studios, every third party game will run like shit compared to cheaper PS4.

$400 dollars = 1080P/60 FPS, better online, free games monthly with online, better controller, better hardware design (no 35% failure rate like failbox), and better exclusives.

Go fuck off Microsoft you are not kidding anybody this generation.

  92. Ireland Michael

Not really sure I understand what makes this a disasterous launch. You people take the significance and impact of 90% of this stuff way too seriously.

PSN went down for what? 90 minutes? A statement that EA made was redacted. So what? 99% of people playing the console won’t know anything about it.

Where exactly is the “disaster” in all this?

    #92 1 year ago
  93. G1GAHURTZ

    @86, 90:

Yeah, MS definitely have the well known ability to mess things up.

However, I think their main problem is usually just being out of touch with public demand.

They somehow get an idea that ‘this is what people want’, then they stick a high price on it and ditch it it after a year or two.

That goes for Zune and GFWL among other things. It’s looking like being the way that Windows 8 RT is going, too.

Obviously, that’s not what happened with the original Xbox or the 360. There was a danger it could happen with the original X1 idea, but I think that there were enough gamers willing to put up with the DRM to keep it going.

Anyway, the point is that their issue is usually one of misreading what people actually want, rather than a technical one (RRoD asside).

Azure (the MS cloud) is looking like being the future of the company, if they really want to move into being a ‘devices and services’ company like they claim, so I just can’t see them not being ready for the X1 launch.

    I could be wrong…

    #93 1 year ago
  94. Obernox

    Inevitable launch issues……
Same will happen with Xbox One, especially with all that backpedaling MS did. I’d be shocked if Xbox One launched without any malfunction at all.

    #94 1 year ago
  95. ultragamer

@88 You better hope a bricked PS3.5 can beat an Xbox One because that’s what Sony is offering, $400 bricks.

$400 – For a PS3.5 that offers the same exact experience as the 10-year old PS3 with slightly better graphics. Same XMB interface with no way to sort your games or view them in an organized manner. Same network infrastructure, offering PS2′s peer-2-peer online technology (the inability to change your user ID just proves they are using outdated network technology). Exclusive AAA games that have so far received HORRIBLE reviews. HDMI ports that are broken. The inability of adding an external HDD (even the Wii U supports this feature!). Indie games that belong on the PS3.

Plus for $60 more, you get a camera that lets you see yourself on TV as you wave your arms like and idiot and shake the controller, all in 240p @ 15fps. They are probably using the same EyeToy from the PS2. What a pathetic camera.

^^^ What a steal! Sign me up for one of those! ROFL

i was expecting network issues…but how the hell do you manage to ship out broken consoles? i didn’t stand in line freezing my ass off all night before launch day to have to wait til Christmas to actually USE my damn console.. -___-

@104. Glad you enjoyed it. At least we now know why retail PS4′s weren’t at E3, Gamescom, EuroGamer & TGS. Sony obviously knew they had issues with some of these systems and didn’t want to take any chances putting these things on showroom floors. It would be like Russian Roulette. Push the button on the PS4. This one works, this one works, this one bricks, this one works, this one bricks, etc… lol!! I haven’t even opened my PS4 yet. It’s still in the box. I’ll be getting a 2yrs extension warranty on mine before I open it. lol!! Glad the PS4 comes with a 1 year warranty, but getting ahold of Sony’s Customer Support is a pain in the butt. I suggest people stay off of PSN until Sony makes an announcement to the press/public concerning these issues. Download the firmware to a USB drive and load it from there. Good luck everyone.
