PS4: it’s hard to keep everything on PSN free, says Sony

Wednesday, 13th November 2013 08:37 GMT By Dave Cook

PlayStation 4 users will have to pay for online multiplayer in the next-generation, and Sony’s Eric Lempel has stressed that this necessity comes from the explosive growth of both PSN and PS Plus. It’s becoming a bigger investment for the company, so it has to make more out of it essentially.

If follows Sony’s event in New York, during which the company released this PS4 interface video. It gives you an idea of how the console’s menus have changed, and what they’re capable of.

Speaking with, vice president of Sony Network Entertainment and head of global marketing Lempel said of the need to charge for PSN on PS4, “There’s a ton of value in the network. We’ve built up the network over the years and made a significant investment… and it’s quite honestly hard to keep everything [free].

“The network’s gotten so much better and it’s completely redesigned on PS4. And the investment in Plus gives the user a ton of value, so putting multiplayer in there will continue to help us build the network up for our users. It’s a massive infrastructure to run this thing, and now with some of these social features there’s a lot going on.”

Sony will still offer several facets of PSN and its app services for free however, and Lempel believes this gives PS4 the edge over Xbox One, where an Xbox Live gold account will be required for most services. “What I will say is we kept everything else free to the user,” he stressed. “So for example, we’ve got 11 partner apps right off the bat… that are not gated at all. This is something our competition isn’t doing,”

He revealed that Sony has seen “significant growth” in both PSN and PS Plus activity over the current cycle, with some 150 million registered PSN accounts worldwide. Lempel believes that PS Plus will be worth paying for and added, “If you really look at the value you get from the instant game collection, especially if you have multiple consoles, it’s an unbelievable value. Right off the bat, these two games we’re giving away on day one are over $30, so it’s a great deal for the user.

Those two games are of course, Resogun and Contrast, available to download for free on day-one if you’re a PS Plus subscriber.

PS4 is out November 15 in the States and November 29 across the UK and Europe.

You get an assload of games free (Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, Sleeping Dogs, AC3, Spec Ops The Line), can download and keep them whenever you want, betas, discounts, 1 GB of cloud storage, and even exclusive rights to buy certain things. And it’s carrying over and giving free shit to PS4 users too.

This is more than worth the $45-$50 to me.

Then again though, this is vg247, I’m sure there is a user who finds that there is something to hate about PS Plus, watch this…

Ps+ is great, I just hope it is Sonys intention to keep up the great service on ps4 rather than soften the blow with having to pay for multiplayer

@2 I hate the yellow colour on the plus symbol. It should be fucking red.

    Totes jokes yo.

On a serious note though Dave, how do you keep from putting a gun to your temple when there is so many jaded gamers on this site that thinks they know and simultaneously hate everything?..

It must rub off on you doesn’t it?

You guys seem like experts haha!

Seriously though, the sheer amount of content I got last year was well worth the subscription fee.

@7 I don’t know. I’m a massively positive person and sometimes I’d rather do nothing than play games in the evenings. I still love them dearly, but yeah, I get mentally exhausted by this industry at times.

“The fuck kinda name is Plus? That must mean plus more suck, huh?! Sony lost teh race!”

    Am I doing it right?

Well, I’m really not paying for Plus, and never will.

But I don’t hate it. I just don’t have use for it.

PS+ was great for PS3 sure, but i doubt we’ll keep getting AAA releases until half a year after PS4 has launched.

Anyone who think they’ll recieve AC4/Killzone/Knack for free the second month are going to be disappointed. Probably a whole lot of indies for free the first half a year.

Nobody is expecting it are they? PS+ *is still* great for PS3 *and* PSV in the meantime for a fee which covers all machines. They’ve already laid out most of the titles for the first six months if you look at it. Outlast, Sombreros, Resogun, Contrast, DriveClub, Don’t Starve and Binding of Isaac are all first six months or there abouts. That’s not bad for <£20 even if you don't have any other PS machine.

    ^ +1.

But I have to say, PS Plus sucks. First off, only 5 free games per month????????. You got to be kidding me. I need 50 of them, all AAAAAAAAAA type.
Also, 50 bucks? You kidding again Sony? I can buy freaking Angry Birds for a fiftieth of that price. You ripoff Sony.
The service is more like a PSMinus.

Btw, the December Plus update is due today. Looking forward to it.

@12 in a way, the fact that its the indies that are free for the first 6 months is very positive.
these are games that arent going to be on the shelves of your local game store, wont have adverts on TV during x factor, or at the cinema…
they are experiences that i might not automatically look to pick up (unless they received the type of hype that journey or thomas was alone got, making me think its justified to spend a tenner on them), yet, being free, means i will definitely play them!
like new little kings story for Vita. ive not heard or seen anything about it online or anywhere, yet it pops up as a free game on +, and here i am giving it a go, and playing it!
the AAA titles will come eventually, but i might have already bought those. its the indie games that id never normally find that im actually more excited to see pop up on +.
and i am VERY excited for Contrast and Resogun!

All right fanboys. So what will you get for “free” (free equals 50$) in the very first months? New Killzone? BF4? AC4. Nope. I was thinking Angry Birds, some puzzles or pinball. That kind of crap. Maybe Sony will give something worthy in a year or so. Not now.

  17. VibraniumSpork

    @16 First: *sigh*

Second: Well we probably won’t get Angry Birds – too big of a cash cow. But we will get some awesome Indie games (“That kind of crap,” that I guess doesn’t fit into your narrow view of what constitutes an enjoyable modern video game) and maybe some AAA fare – Driveclub’s still confirmed to be on its way after all, and we might see something Knack-related or a lower-tier Third Party Game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Injustice: Ultimate Edition made available sometime around the new year.

We’ll also be getting the usual great assortment of games across our Vitas and PS3s as well. And discounts on any number of first and third party releases on PSN.

Don’t worry though. Games With Gold will probably have a copy of Fable 2 or Viva Pinata ready for you by then. Dat value proposition.

Third: Please make sincere efforts to temper your fanboy rage, you callow and inveterate Jimmy Rustler.

Well….. The only thing the bothers me about PS+ is how much i’ve been spoiled by it. Seiously, i’m afraid to buy any indies because it’ll end up free eventually.

Oh, and aa slight annoyance about spending $30 on a game only to see free a month later >:(

“PS Plus will be worth paying for”. I feel that Sony have been upfront and their actions have shown that quote to be accurate. In that case, I’m not opposed to them asking for payment to help maintain, and enhance in future, a high quality service.

@18. That $30 game is yours whenever, wherever. (If bought on disc, add emphasis to wherever). Whilst the games you gained through plus are yours as long as you maintain your sub.

@17 What fanboy rage? Did i said i own xbox? Looks at yours comment BTW. Who are “WE”? Sony customers or Sony workers? Im just saying that psn plus wont be such a great deal on PS4, because of poor choice. But you are just another silly wannabe with his “i know better, so shut up” attitude. Good for you.

I was wondering how long it’d be until the bickering started and the word ‘fanboy’ would appear.

    Nothing if not consistent.

  23. VibraniumSpork

@20 ‘We’ being the PS+ers you presumably singled out in “So what will *you* get for “free”…” line which was, assuredly, designed to provoke, much like the whole post.

Still, whatevs. T’was just general internet bullshit/back n’ forth, no hard feels bro. I still believe that PS+ is pretty sweet though…

I wish MS would do a 180 on keeping other app services behind the paywall. I just don’t see the logic behind it other than them being openly greedy, which I am both impressed and detested by.

  25. CycloneFox

Even as a big fan of PS Plus, I can understand, what misieque means. If you don’t own a PS3 nor PSP or Vita, you only get about 2 non-AAA-games at the very launch of the PS4, discounts and the ability to play online, plus anytihng everyone gets, of course. That is pretty much how I feel about Xbox Live minus the two games.
But with the times, more and more games will come and after a very short time you have alot more games than time with Plus.

  26. DrDamn

“you only get about 2 non-AAA-games at the very launch of the PS4″

Assuming you pay full price for a year PS+ works out at £3.33 a month. Even if you just have a PS4 and it’s just a couple of well regarded indie titles I fail to see the value problem.
