Destiny won’t hit PC at launch as spreading Bungie too thin could hurt other platforms, says Osborne

Monday, 4th November 2013 08:43 GMT By Dave Cook

Destiny is an online shooter with MMO sensibilities, so it seems like a natural fit for the PC market. However, Bungie community manager Eric Osborne has stressed that it’s not the focus right now as it would spread the studio too thin.

It comes as part of an IGN interview, during which Osborne revealed that Bungie added fantasy elements to Destiny so people wouldn’t confuse it with Halo.

PCGamesN picked up on this nugget, which saw Osborne commenting on the future of Destiny on PC.

He said, “It’s a huge challenge to ship four platforms and a massive opportunity to reach a new audience. We know there are a lot of people out there asking for PC and we know that there are a lot of gamers that would willingly give us money, but what we have to do is make sure we’re focused enough to bring a good experience to any platform that we ship on.

“What we 100 percent are not going to do is spread ourselves so thin that it negatively harms the other platforms. So right now we have the four platforms, which is a lot to focus on.”

Would this be of interest after the console versions are out the door? Would you like to see Destiny get a PC release?

Bungie ca suck it, I have no intention of buying “next-gen” consoles
if that means I won’t have the possibility to play Destiny .. so be it

i can’t link my psn id to my xbl id on bungie.net btw – wtf, i mean there is an option for that but it’s just not working. will try again later.
i mean, even if i will play this on the playstation. i still want to show off my (miserable) halo stats for bragging rights :)

Guess what their code were running on PC for a long time because they didn’t have dev-kits. So dear Bungie just tell us that you don’t want Destiny on PC. Maybe Activision doesn’t want it on PC. Either way don’t make excuses and tell us the truth ok? :D

What it means is this.. basically the game already developed on PC but downscaled for current and next-gen consoles. They need to ‘milk’ the money first from consoles before the PC. Like GTA.

    Idiots.
…and Ubisoft is laughing all the way to the bank (The Division).

Better to keep it on superior platforms.

The X360 and PS2 are only superior to some modern mobile phones. It’s pretty safe to say there is 10x more PCs out there that are more capable than the dying generation of consoles, so it doesn’t make any sense. At all.

Hm. Marketing speak. Usually if something isn’t being released on the PC, you won’t find out unless someone specifically pesters someone about it a lot. For them to just come out and say this?

I suspect a delayed PC release is on the cards.

    Marketing is weird.

When they see Borderlands 3 on PC / next gen consoles, they will shit bricks and release this ASAP.

Wont spread your selves too thin but you will base your tech on an out dated generation in order to pull in the extra sales. These aged consoles are holding the industry as a whole back. Seven to eight year old tech is being used as a bar that must be met. I would be much more excited about Destiny if it was NOT coming to PS3 and XB360.

New IP and no PC launch, not that surprising really. The PC tends to take bit of a backseat in terms of getting new IPs, especially at the start of a new console gen.

When they were doing Halo it was on PC, but not on PS2/PS3 so it was just two platforms. Destiny is launching on 4 platforms as it is, so I can see where you start to add staff if you go to a fifth.

That said, I would be very surprised if we don’t see it on PC within 2 years. Once you get the launch and the obligatory DLC out of the way, they will be able to put together a launch team for PC, even if they are also working on Destiny 2 at the time.

@15 everything you said is true, but it’s unfortunately quite necessary for most studios right now. Destiny appears to be a very ambitious project, which is expensive. If they go next-gen only, they lose so much money the game might not pay for itself.

I thought it was pretty obvious that this was the state of things.

Trying to make a game on that scale on three different platforms (I guess four if you consider the Xbone and PS4 different creatures) would be too much even for Bungie.

I think they’re gonna get it off to a good start on the boxes and then turn towards the PC once the revenue streams have peaked and they need a little boost.

There is nothing to say, Bungie does not have the shoulders, it does not have the shoulders, period.

Would I like to see Destiny on PC, why not, but don;t wait too long to PORT the game.
If @20 is right then Forget about it… I do not see why a platform should be the last wheel, it is annoying for those platform lovers at many levels.

@21 I disagree, doing it right is better than doing it all.

    It’s nothing personal.

Although @10 has a point too. PC FPS online are just plagued with retarded hackers of all sorts, maybe that is a also a point why it is a tedious venture for Bungie to port to PC.

    @22
I was talking at personal level, whereas I tend to lose hype fairly quickly and don;t see a value of 60$ in game that is 1 year, 2 years old and would rather wait til the price crunches down.

No problem at all. I don’t think so high of PC. Sadly we won’t be able to play online with people from all plataforms together.
