Tesco responsible for one third of GTA 5′s sales in the UK

Monday, 28th October 2013 16:22 GMT By Sherif Saed

Major UK supermarket chain Tesco is responsible for about one third of all the Grand Theft Auto 5 sales made in across Britain.

The Grocer reports the news (via MCV UK), and adds that the game helped boost the shares of Tesco to 17.1 per-cent from 11.9 per-cent in the same period of time last year.

Other major supermarket chains also saw the same improvements, Asda saw an increase of 2.3 per-cent to 12.1 per-cent, while Sainsbury’s saw a 2.9 per-cent to 6.9 per-cent.

Fiona Keenan, Kantar strategic insight director, stated, “Tesco has been the big winner.

“Asda and GAME also benefited, both growing their shares compared to last year. It will be interesting to see if the success of the supermarkets in the games sector continues this Christmas with the release of PS4 and Xbox One. GAME and Amazon are leading the way in pre-orders so far and we expect specialist gaming retailers to do particularly well in the run-up to launch as consumers look for help and advice,” she added.

I work in a small-ish tesco store and we sold through 500 copies (300 on xbox, 200 on ps3) in the day it came out, which worked out at about 20grand, so knowing it was a massive game they did well putting their money on shipping so many copies to our store.

@1 that’s insane, but I can absolutely believe it. I used to work for Game and Gamestation and their numbers were big for GTA 4.

It still continues on to sell in my store despite the game going from £38 on week 1 to now being £44 … madness.

Amazing. I’d never think to buy a game from Tesco really but I’m a nerd…if you’re someone too busy to try and find a dedicated gaming store in your town or to hunt down the best deal online, why wouldn’t you pick it up alongside your Fray Bentos pie and Foccacia bread (now that’s a next-level meal, right there)?

When I have sprogs I’ll probably be one of these schmoes…oh, the humanity.
