Tales staff “is very limited,” so it’s “not possible” to localize every title for the west, says Baba

Tales series producer Hideo Baba has said due to the limited size of the team involved in creating the RPG series, it’s “not possible” to localize every Tales title for the west.

Speaking in an interview with Siliconera, Baba said instead, localization priority is given to flagship titles, so don’t expect English language versions of Tales of Hearts R or Tales of Innocence R any time soon, unfortunately.

“When considering which titles can be localized to be released in the Western market, our first priority are the flagship titles, such as Tales of Xillia,” said Baba. “After that, our second priority are remake titles or all-star titles.

“Because the number of development members we have on staff is very limited, it’s not possible to localize every single Tales title. So we have to pick and choose when deciding which parts of the Tales series we would like to bring out to the rest of the world outside Japan.”

The next titles in the series to head west are Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and Tales of Xillia 2 in 2014.

    The need to get a bigger staff then. If they want to increase their sales and profits, they need to bring everything to all the major markets. US, Europe & Japan markets should be a no brainer.

    So let me get this straight.
    Instead of hiring 2-3 people to write english subtitles and sell thousands of copies, they decide not to.

    Localization doesn’t have to mean dubbing. Most jrpg fans actually prefer the original voicework. In the non flagship titles, just throw some subs and publish it like this. If you are worried, publish only limited copies, like 20.000 pieces. Its extra money with hardly any work!

    @1 If it was that simple, they would just do it. The simple fact that’s its a cartoon styled JRPG already reduces its appeal to a fairly limited, niche market.

    Video games of their scale are not cheap to make. Throwing more people at it is only going to increase costs and reduce whatever profit (if any) the main games could actually make in the west.

    @2 It takes a heck of a lot more than “two or three people” to localise a game.

    Games need to go through approval processes, rating certification, additional coding, printing and distribution, etc.. Many of those require entire divisions to be created, which costs hundreds of thousands in wages, accommodation, offices, fees, you name it.

    And there is a *lot* of text to localise as well.

    It amazes me just how much people oversimplify some of this stuff. And I’m saying all this as someone who is a *fan* of the Tales of… games.

    Actually, as I understand it, most Tales localization is handled by 8-4. They could just get them more involved in the development and give them more freedom to save the actual development team some break.

    NamDai already has an American branch though, so they actually have the resource to pull these things off.

    Whether the benefits outweigh the costs is another matter entirely.

    Is everyone forgetting how poorly Vita games sell in the West, anyway? They’re localizing the PS3 titles. Those are niche enough, but they have realistic expectations of them. The Vita ones may end up costing them more money than they make and I do not want to lose the console titles just so they can experiment with the portable ones.

    They’ve been doing a great job with bringing Graces F, Xillia 1 & 2, and the Symphonia Chronicles over. I don’t want that sort of thing put at risk so they can possibly get a portable title or two over.

    @5 Indeed. I think they should be commended for the work they have done so far. In a genre that is so lacking in genuine quality this gen, Tales of… still consistently delivers some of the best.
