Sega talks remakes, wants your suggestions on what to do next

Friday, 25th October 2013 11:20 GMT By Dave Cook

Sega’s remakes haven’t had the best track-record, but the company’s CS Research and Development producer Yosuke Okunari has spoken about his desire to see them given better treatment. He added that Sega’s next remakes all depend on what players shout about the loudest.

I think most of already know that if I had my way, they’d make Streets of Rage 4. I dedicated a whole blog to that doomed game last year. Obsessed much?

Now, speaking with Siliconera, Okunari said of his experience with remakes, “I started with Dragon Force of the Sega Ages 2500 series that was released on August of 2005,” Okunari said. “This series features remade titles from the past, but Virtua Fighter 2′s faithful remake that was released in 2004, was very well received.

“From that, I was able to understand what it takes to make such a faithful remake, and it’s something I’ve put a lot of importance in, since I’ve started working on the series. So, we developed the Space Harrier Complete Collection, an entire compilation of the series, to go with the various generations of our customers. The concept was to recreate the games exactly the way they were originally made. The things staff members wanted to express in the past but couldn’t, are now possible with today’s technology. And we’d like to share that joy.

He stressed than the fans will be a big factor in what Sega tackles next, “For our next lineup, it will depend on all of your voices, so please continue to support us.”

You all want Shenmue HD right? No? Yes?

Streets of Rage and a new Shinobi would be great. I loved the Shinobi games on PS2, would be great if it was less trial and error (please no jump to your deaths anymore) and had a more free-flowing combat. Also a proper checkpoint system. Keep the art-direction though, love it.

remake the game that caused them to lose their Creative ability

the one and only SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (06)
that game was just unfinished if done correctly (better story, less bugs)
it could have been a hit, but no… you guys just milk sonic with piss poor development

if sega can remake the remake, or give us a sonic adventure game
then i would place my faith in sega again

The SEGA AGES series of compilations always sounded like a fantastic treatment of some of their best property. So naturally they were being released only on an antiquated console (PS2 as late as 2008) and only in Japan.

What I’d personally love to see is the contents of volume 33 – the Fantasy Zone Complete Collection – making a leap to a multitude of platforms. Not only was that a great little series, but they went and created a reinterpretation of the second, Sega Master System only game using the arcade hardware of the time (System 16?).

That’d be an interesting angle more generally. Like, what if some of the classic Mega Drive titles – Streets of Rage, Shinobi 3 et al – were running on cutting edge arcade hardware at the time of their release?

@4 Do you mean not a game made by Sega or that Sega don’t own the IP? I know Treasure made the game but I wouldn’t Sega own the IP?

Fucking Shenmue. Remake the first two (with english voice work that doesnt make us want to stab ourselves in the ears, or just leave the game in Japanese), then continue the series.

    Skies of Arcadia
    Shining Force
    Fantasy Zone
Phantasy Star. Not PSO, the original games

Not going to mention Streets of Rage cos that’s just a fucking given.
Is it true that SoR 4 got canned because the then president of Sega America “hadn’t heard of the IP”? I mean *WTF*?

And Dragon Force! OMG of course that needs a re-release.

Skies of Arcadia doesn’t need a remake.

As for the rest of them.. You lnow what, Sega? You’ve not had too much in the way of success lately, so how about you invest in some new IPs instead of risking trashing the much-loved older ones? If you need to be asking us what to do next, that’s a pretty bad sign in itself.

I remember Sega pulling a cease and desist on the completely free Streets of Rage Remake Project as it version 5.0. It featured multiple paths, around 10 playable characters, huge soundtrack, HD and Controller support.

Game was actually friggin’ fantastic, but nobody got to play it! Sega SHOULD take a note from their fans on this one and if they really wanna do the next Streets of Rage right, maybe get the developers of the original as well as the people that made the fan-based remake together and make a true next-gen Streets of Rage.

    One can dream, right?

I’m completely indifferent to all of Sega’s old IPs.

If they bring Valkyria Chronicles 3 to the west with the function to bring Eleanor Varrot as a playable intact and revive that franchise on consoles, then I’ll probably start caring. The Hyperdimension Neptunia games carry on without them, and they completely gave up on Bayonetta.

  25. dizzygear

Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers are the fírst games that come to mind.

Would be nice IF they remade them they would actually release them in the west as well unlike that huge re-release collection for the PS2 that never made it here.

    Alex Kidd. Please.

I know most of his games weren’t very good, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make them better with a remake. Besides, he’s SEGA’s old mascot – I really think it wouldn’t hurt to bring him back one more time.

    Either that, or Fantasy Zone.
