2K Marin is “essentially” closed after staff reduction – report

Friday, 18th October 2013 12:06 GMT By Dave Owen

The Bureau and BioShock 2 dev 2K Marin is “essentially” shuttered after severe staff reductions that affected the “majority” of team members. There has been no official announcement of the studio’s closure.

Despite this, sources have spoken to Rock Paper Shotgun and said that the only people keeping their jobs have been offered new positions at 2K’s new Novato studio, which was set up by BioShock Infinite producer Rod Fergusson.

“A couple of weeks ago, the new 2K team in Novato (the one Rod Fergusson is leading) interviewed and made offers to a small number of 2K Marin team members,” an anonymous ex-2K Marin employee said. “I don’t know exactly how many, but it wasn’t a lot. It sounds like everyone who was not offered a position on that team was let go today.”

Similar reports have emerged elsewhere, with another source telling Polygon they were “100% sure” that 2K Marin was no more.

We wish the best to all of those who have lost their job in finding new positions soon.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

I wonder if Jordan Thomas could see this coming and got out while he could. Or if it was his leaving that brought about the closure of the studio in the first place?

Making a very mediocre game out of a strong franchise, over time and over budget, that brought about the closure of this studio.

@2 This. I mean I haven’t played it, but it was so obvious.

2K Marin did a great job on BS2 so I think i’ll go with publisher interference on this closure.

2K pretty much blundered the marketing on it from day 1. Branding it an XCOM game was a poor decision.

The original Bioshock First person game they showed off looked quite interesting. They should have stuck with that, which is what I assume the developers wanted to make.
