Pokemon X & Y moves over 1.8 million units in Japan, GTA 5 moves a respectable 386,727 units

Pokemon X & Y moved over 1.8 million units in Japan in one day, according to Media Create, topping the charts for the week of October 7-13. Yesterday, Nintendo announced the games had moved over 4 million units combined worldwide within two days. Another new entry on the charts, Grand Theft Auto 5, didn’t do too shabby considering it had to go up against Pokemon: the PS3 version debuted at number two with 360,115 units moved and the Xbox 360 version moved 26,612 units for a combined total of 386,727 units.

Monster Hunter 4, which was the top selling software for four weeks in a row came in a respectable third on the chart with 110,208 units sold, bringing its lifetime total to 2,652,824 units.

Other high-profile debut titles for the week included: Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Fairy Fencer F, and F1 2013 along with three other new titles from SEGA, Compile Heart and Spike Chunsoft.

On the hardware side, the only Xbox 360 title to land in the top 20 was GTA 5, which means the hardware spike of 221 units over the week prior can be attributed to Rockstar’s title as looking over the top 30 on NeoGAF, there isn’t another 360 title included on the chart.

Meanwhile, 3DS LL and 3DS sales soared with the former moving 141,245 units compared to 85,885 the prior week and the latter moving 72,325 units over 37,102 the week prior.

However, Vita sales are the big news this week: the week prior, sales only hit 3,538. This week, sales hit a massive 60,166 units thanks to the new 2000 model being released.

PS3 sales were up by a couple thousand units give or take, and sales of PSP, Wii U, and Wii declined over the prior week.

Here’s the full software chart for October 7-13. Life-to-date sales are in parentheses:

Good to see the Vita sell a decent amount. Hope it continues.

I’d imagine 3DS hardware may even increase next week too considering the jump this week would have mostly been from 1 days worth of sales with the release of Pokemon…?

Great opening for Pokemon, although a little less than expected, since pre-orders itself were 1.5 million+. Looks like most pre-ordered it.

Vita sales are very good too. Looks like all those rumors of sales going down in anticipation of new model were true after all. 60k also matches the sales that were after the price cut, so its very good indeed.
    Oh, and this ad worked-

And obviously, the GTA beast. Its one of the best, if not the best FW in Japan for a western game. Awesome.

Great sales for DanganRonpa 1&2 too.

And Wii U…. the less said the better. You know its dire when 360 is giving it some competition. Sad indeed.
The walking dead.. or maybe already dead. Wii was discontinued, and Wii U is just barely selling above that. Will Wii U be discontinued too?

    Consoles Sold

    Nintendo – 217,540
    Sony – 76,028
    MS – 575

Nintendo sold over 141,512 consoles than it’s nearest rival. Numbers are fun.

@4 – No wonder MS aren’t in any rush to get the Xbone out in Japan!

Pokemon X/Y and GTA 5 are both beasting in Japan.

Pokemon X/Y and Monster Hunter 4 are giving the 3DS a big boost, staying similar or higher for Zelda?

Anthing below the at or below PSP is either in dire need of rescue or falling into the abyss. So yeah like Dragon said about Wii U at a point.

Game sales are consistent and healthy.

@6 – “staying similar or higher for Zelda?”

I’m not so sure. Japan don’t seem to be such big fans of the Zelda series as the west, but I’m sure it won’t hurt!

^Yup. No where near a boost like this. However it will be released in holidays, and 3ds sales will probably remain at 150k+ during that time anyway.

The reason why Wii U sales are so low is because there is a new bundle coming on October 31st for the same price as the ones now that include 3 games.

    - Wii U: 3,276

    - Xbox 360: 575

    Net difference – 2701

Getting outsold by 2700 units is “giving it some competition”
did you forget how to count?

And why Would the Wii U be discontinued when its best games are still in front of it unlike the Wii. You guys really think the sales are going to be like this when Super Mario 3D World, Wii Sports Club, Sonic Lost World, and Mario and Sonic drop this month and next?

Oh and did you guys see those Wind Waker HD sales in America? Or how about Wii U sales in America outselling the PS3 and 3DS on the power of a HD remake?

    - Another thing to note, Japan is getting a bundle that comes with 3 games for the same price on October 31st. They are obviously waiting.

@11 Beating out a dead format that barely sold in the region to begin with, with sales numbers that are obscenely low for the region and for new hardware, is not “giving it some competition”. The hardware should be selling ten times those numbers.

It all feels alarmingly like the Dreamcast all over again. It won’t kill Nintendo, nothing so drastic, but the console’s incredibly poor performance *is* severely damaging Nintendo’s profits, and its impossible to ignore that fact. Even with the 3DS’s slow start (which happens to all new hardware), it was never as bad as this.

You’re picking fights for the hell of it.

    @12

Timing is tough for the Wii U.

People expect huge things from what they think is ‘proper hardcore gamers’ next gen. They have been waiting 8 years and nothing is going to stop them playing COD in 1080p this christmas.

    @12

I’m not saying the sales are low, I’m just saying people are waiting for the new bundles on October 31st. Just like people were waiting for the new PS Vita 2000.

Not only that, but there were no new games released. When more games come out the sales will go up.

The Wii U sales increased in Europe and the US thanks to The Wind Waker HD. Dragon just uses the Media Create to doom Wii U.

@14 Even with the new bundles, the sales figures are still going to be incredibly low. The hardware cannot continue at this snail pace.

The Wii U doesn’t just need a shot in the arm. It needs cardiac resuscitation.

Its sad, honestly. I love Nintendo. They still provide some of the best game experiences in this industry… when they bother to put in the effort. Effort not seen half enough anymore.

it still won’t sell more then GTA or COD

since the exclusivity is kinda bad for the casual consumer

still the 3DS is better then the vita in a varity of games

but exlcusivity is still bullshit for 2013

I’m not surprised that Pokemon X/Y is doing well.

They really pulled out all the stops this time to help create a much more unique and complete Pokemon experience. And you don’t have to go through brain hurdles to do EV training any more! Allow me to say that I can’t think of anything I despised more in prior Pokemon games than training up the EV stats.

Now, EV training is called ‘special training’ and accessed from the bottom screen like Pokemon Amie. For those who were avoiding Pokemon because of the EV training — now is the time to come back. They made EVs not only visible, but easy to actually deal with on a per Pokemon basis.

I never thought they’d do that, since up till now EVs have been the Pokemon Company’s secret, special way of torturing Pokemon fans.

So, yeah, I can safely say that this is by far and wide the best Pokemon game I’ve played on any level.
