Pokémon X & Y released for Nintendo 3DS on Saturday, October 12 and has already sold over 4 million units across Japan, Europe and the Americas according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures.

Nintendo said that since this was the first global launch between two versions “in franchise’s history,” when combining and comparing regional data for previous launches, Pokémon X & Y are the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games of all time and are tracking ahead of the last Pokémon Black & White 2, by more than 70%.

With more than 245 million games sold worldwide, since 2002, five sets of Pokémon titles have combined to exceed 10 million units sold to date worldwide, with three sets combining to surpass 15 million units. That list includes:

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl - Nintendo DS -17.63 Million
Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire – Game Boy Advance – 16.22 Million
Pokémon Black and Pokémon White -Nintendo DS – 15.42 Million
Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver – Nintendo DS -12.67 Million
Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen – Game Boy Advance -12 Million

A note: data from Europe primarily covers Saturday, October 12, as the great majority of retail outlets are closed on Sundays across Europe.

I’d like to know what kind of boost the game has had on hardware sales.
With a new Zelda coming next month Nintendo are soon to be diving in their Scrooge McDuck pool of money again.

Its time to crown Pokémon the most important Ninty franchise (Mario being second and leaving Zelda out, which has lost its sales potential). Probably the only Ninty franchise that “innovates” right now, and it can be seen in sales.
Too bad for Wii U that Pokémon as a franchise is deeply rooted in handhelds.
