SOMA debut trailer released by Frictional Games, out on PC and PS4 in 2015

SOMA, the latest from Amnesia: The Dark Decent developers Frictional Games, has been released.

The firm had released two teasers previously: ‘SOMA: Item #4017 – “Mockingbird” and ‘SOMA Item #2656 – “Vivarium“.

According to the game description, strange occurrences are “disrupting the routines of the PATHOS-2 research facility,” as the radio has become silent; behavioral anomalies of the machines are increasingly dangerous, “if not… malevolent,”; and the facility is “devolving into chaos”.

There are no weapons, and the only escape is “practically unthinkable.”

Frictional describes SOMA as an “aberrant tale of scientific inquiry and survival; an entropic exploration of synapse and circuit that wades through the delusions of human consciousness.”

The game is slated for PC and PS4 in 2015.

Watch over four minutes of atmospheric horror below.

Not a lot of improvements for a HPL Engine 3. I guess it’s because of PS4′s hardware. Well it’s a shame. Well, at least we have HDR lightning and in-engine terrain generation.

Anyway, from the creators of Penumbra and Amnesia: The dark Descent… Looks good.

I had hoped they would have hired some half decent voice actors.

I still hope they completely do away with the stupid as fuck adventure game style puzzles. Something similar recently came out called Montagues Mount, an interesting little horror game completely ham-strung by relying on Myst style puzzles. It completely breaks connection with the game World and destroys immersion. MM is set on an amazing recreation of an Irish island, it looks fantastic (a little over-board with the filters but for a one man team I can let it slip) so having to go through a bunch of terrible logic puzzles just saps my will to play it. The first major puzzle of the game concerns find 4 wooden blocks in the game world, then adding them to a machine, the correct order for the blocks is found by looking at a flashing light on a bouy and then converting it into morse code then using the letters to correspond to colours on the blocks.

In a first person immersive horror game. Thats only part of the puzzle aswell. You are in no danger, it just cuts the pacing in half and what makes it worse is that the entire thing is just to lower a bridge over a stream that your character could simply climb across.

With Soma, Frictional have a real chance to make something amazing, take all of the ideas from Penumbra, add that to the atmosphere and level design of Amnesia. Add in an arresting, interesting story.
