Xbox One is expected to outsell PlayStation 4 this holiday season – UK retail chain

Thursday, 10 October 2013 21:25 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Xbox One is expected to outsell PlayStation 4 this holiday season, at least according to UK chain John Lewis’ head tech buyer Jonathan Marsh.

Speaking with Trusted Reviews, Marsh said Xbox One has the edge due to its game line-up and Xbox Live service.

“We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One,” Marsh said. “We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates.”

Marsh said he feel the console will appeal more to the chain’s consumer base, and is also basing his opinion on what the firm has “experienced in the past” with Microsoft consoles.

Thanks, GI International.

So UK likes more TV Sports TV?

Personally I don’t believe this. PS4 and Xbox One has a price difference and game-line-up is a subjective thing. From my perspective all of the games next gen consoles launch line-up is pathetic to buy a system for 400$ or 500$

The core gamers will buy a PS4. Xbox One may cater to the more casual crowd for its non-gaming functions, but I don’t see that happening until it drops in price.

    @4
Who do you think makes the Xbox 360 and is making the One? Are you forgetting about the Foxconn workers threatening to commit mass suicide over a pay dispute over the 360? Sheesh.

    @9
What on earth makes you say the PS4 is more suited for the core crowd than the XB1? Makes no sense to me. If you like games on either console you buy it, you don’t buy a console just because ”everyone else” is going to buy it. Or do you?

@ #8, I agree whole heartily. I’m skipping both PS4/xBone this year, and just stick with my PC for the multiplats… I might bite on the Wii U for Christmas though, its games library is starting to take shape..

My guess is the xBone/PS4 wont have a decent library until holiday 2014.

@9 – Would you then say that Xbox 360 catered to the core crowd and Playstation 3 to the casual gamer wanting a cheap blu-ray player?

I think they both cater to the core crowd. Microsoft is just offering a few more features. Both consoles turned into multi-use platforms last generation and were not limited to gaming.

So just because a console is not limited to running games, doesn’t it make it less of a gamer’s console.

  15. fearmonkey

I hope both are successful as it’s good for us consumers and I’ll get an Xbone eventually.

However I want the PS4 to outsell the Xbox One at first, as MS seems to do better for gamers when they are challenged.

I can’t imagine this true however, from the Top 100 lists on Amazon for Video games, there are always more PS4 items in there than for Xbone.
Maybe the FIFA thing for the UK is a big deal?

I cant wait to see how it all works out… The gamers are the winners in a good competition.

Side note – I cant imagine the price difference helping sell to casuals fort Xbox One. I would think the PS4 would get more of that.

  16. DSB

The PS4 is definitely gonna be ahead at launch, but the Xbone won’t be far behind.

Personally I’m worried about the cloud at this point. Cloud computing has ruined a lot of games, and even if it’s relatively painless I’d be worried about how much of the cloud Microsoft wants to spare for a game five years down the road.

I like going back to old games.

It’s true xbox carries a sense of recognized brand. On top os it MS offer free game with xbox1 which is appealing to moms. But the fact of the 100 dollars difference will certainly repel many.
Is Ms going to outsell Sony, I don’t think so. At least not for the First year, not even in UK alone.
But then again we can’t argue the power of PR and marketing acting like th e force of the Jedi on the weak mind.

Title’s a bit miss-leading – basically JLP saying they think XB1 might be more in demand for JLP customers : JLP customer base hardly translates to whole UK and the comments are clearly on referring to their business.

Alright. So. Both consoles are going to be great. PS4 is a beastial, classic gaming console. Xbox One is an all in one entertainment box with next-gen gameplay via Kinect.

But with these retailers it’s all about revenue. If 1 million next-gen consoles sell, they’ll get more revenue if more of those are Xbox Ones.

They should be pushing it hard over the PS4 so they’re quarterly revenues max out higher. Who cares though? Both will be great.

Given that the PS4 is now the ‘peoples champion’…

    It is cheaper
    It is more powerful
It doesn’t force a camera on you
You can get free games at launch with PS Plus
You can crossplay games with Vita (If you own one)
It’s almost £100 cheaer than it’s next rival
It’s made by gamers for gamers (the peoples champion)
Sony are purely for gamers and never even thought about DRM

    etc.. etc…

If they’ve got all that going for them and they can’t absolutly decimate the competition, there is something wrong. It should be a massacre.

In reality though, it probably won’t because all the above things have been exaggerated to some extent and both devices are almost identical. Sony as just put a different spin on things that people seem to have swallowed hook line and sinker.

    #50 1 year ago
  51. Lv01

@54 i agree, but it wont be a massacre.
a couple of reasons (of which im sure there are more) being that not every single person buying a next-gen console will be a video game news follower like us, and so wont know about all the u-turns and the DRM thing. and those sort of naive purchases may not realise about PS+, crossplay with a different gadget, and wont understand the hoo-hah about its camera. they will just blindly follow the POS of the stores (which, bringing this back to topic, will be an interesting point to see how John Lewis handle that… will there instore POS advertising favour the xbox one after comments like these..?) and go with what they know. which brings me to my next point:
the xbox, thanks to the 360, might carry more weight in terms of a gaming brand… ive always thought that the term ‘PlayStation’ was more closely linked to gaming, but this last / current generation, i think that might have changed to ‘xbox’…
so i dont think it will necessary be a massacre, but i do still anticipate PS4 coming out on top.

    @54 @55

I am a die hard PS fan but lets be real. You guys know video game news. You know Sony originally planned to price the Playstation at 500 w/ an Eye and not to mention they changed their RAM after the Xbone announcement.

    Google it.

That being said, Sony will win not because it is more powerful on paper, (which has never mattered before), Sony will win because we have the best exclusives. In the end it all comes down to games.

lol @58 sony didn’t change their ram after the xbone announcement. They announced having 8gbs of gddr5 long before xbone was announced.

I agree with the exclusives part. Im glad I chose PS3 over Xbox360 the exclusives are more my type of games.

John Lewis have no PS4 pre-orders on their website. All PS4′s will be sold out at launch so John Lewis won’t be getting any to sell in store. Zero PS4 sales. If MS give John Lewis 10 XB1′s to sell, they can both truthfully claim XB1 out sold PS4 because they have no PS4′s to sell. Propaganda at its most obvious. Nice try Microsoft …lol

  58. zoopdeloop

@58 best exclusives is subjective,it’s more like variety of exlcusives.
It all comes down to personal preference.

Many, many hard core gamers like me aren’t interested in any of those supposedly X1 hardcore games a nerd here oh so proudly presents.

  59. Panthro

@56 Enjoy your games with gold, it must be nice getting 6 year old games.

PS+ in terms of quality far exceeds that of xbox live.

    1) It’s optional on PS3, you don’t need it at all unless you want the extra games for an absolutely minuscule price.
    2) Games are pretty recent to be getting free
    3) On PS4 a subscription isn’t needed for Demos/ Video streaming/ other media apps
    4) Xbox force you to pay for everything, Getting demos and using a streaming service shouldn’t be locked to a subscription on the console, because that’s fucking stupid. If someone wants to watch netflix on their Xbox, should they really need to buy a second subscription with Xbox just to do so? certainly not.

Because Xbox has done so well in the past..
    PS2: 157 mil
    PS: 104 mil
    PS3: 80 mil
    PSP: 79 mil
    360: 78 mil
    Xbox: 24 mil

Hmm, also that 2 mil difference between 360 and ps3 came of very recently, meaning interest in playstation has skyrocketed. The only place the one will sell well, or at all, will be in the US. Europe, Asia, and everywhere else prefers Playstation.
