PS4 pre-orders top 1.5 million, Pachter claims

Tuesday, 8th October 2013 02:45 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Industry analyst Michael Pachter has heard that PlayStation 4 pre-orders have passed another significant milestone.

Pachter mentioned his gossip gleanings in an episode of Bonus Round as transcribed by GamesThirst.

“The only thing they’re gonna have a problem with is supply disruption. That million preorders they talked about, which I understand now is up to one and a half million, that’s a lot of consoles,” he said.

“That tells you that there’s not going to be a lot of boxes behind the first million and a half, so there’s going to be supply shortages.”

Pachter also said Sony’s strategy so far has been “pretty flawless” and that the PS4 sounds like it has “value for cost”.

At gamescom 2013 in August, Sony announced PS4 pre-orders had topped 1 million – well ahead of the PS2 and PS3. That was before its November launch date was locked down, so things have probably accelerated since then. Rumour has it stock will be low for up to four months post-launch, although Sony has said it’s being responsible with pre-orders and stock management in the hopes of avoiding stock issues like those the PS3 suffered.

Thanks, monu-mental.

Well releasing in 33 territories they should have quite a bit of pre-orders, but I think this number is a bit high. We have to keep in mind that a pre-order is intent, but doesn’t always equal a sale 100% of the time.

“Preorder figures dont translate to actual purchases”
    Proof?

On the contrary, first day sales generally EXCEED pre-orders.

Hah MS keeping quiet. Seems they have been above Sony on Amazons top 100 most of the time. Rest of the stores are sold out of XO.

#5 – You do realize that that’s trending not year to date. PS4 preorders had stopped a while back but you can still pre order the XB1. YTD PS4 is ranked 8, 35, 93 and 94. The only Xbox One system that is in the top 100 is the day one edition, standard edition didn’t even make the cut.

When it’s announced the Xbox one is sold out it’s usally talking about the limited stock of Xbox one day one editions.

Yeah okay. Never mind the fact the exact opposite is true. Just look at multiplayer games. Last time I checked, games like Watch Dogs and Ghosts were 20-25 places apart in favour of the PS4.

Sony has played it well so far and it’s impressive considering there are many exclusives we still don’t know about yet…

That Bonus Round vid was really PS4 friendly. Other than Patcher praising Sony, both of other guests said that PS4 was their choice and one of them even had only PS4 pre-ordered even though he was a journalist.

I know that is not a global indicator but one has to admit that a lot of media / press members are leaning towards PS4 rather than X1.

@5 i don’ t know what kind of weed you smoke, but i’m sure is a strong one. Xbox one is in that black box with Xbox One printed and the PS4 is the one with the blue box in where you read Playstation 4, yeah the one in 4th place

@5 you clearly don’t understand how Amazon works. Look at YTD for 2013 – PS4 is smashing XB1 in most territories. Now I have no idea the total situation but on Amazon at least PS4 is leading.

In fact, although it’s got closer since the 180s in the US PS4 is still ahead of XB1 there – in position 8 total YTD vs position 10 for XB1 YTD

All the signs are that PS4 has more pre-orders and is going to sell more overall. Now this might just be because Sony have been able to manufacture more – but either way it looks like MS is really going to miss that big head start the 360 got this time around. Worldwide the current trends indicate XB1 will start and probably remain behind PS4 at least for a while.
