Daikatana appears on Steam, priced £4.99

Wednesday, 2nd October 2013 10:46 GMT By Dave Cook

Daikatana, John Romero’s notorious shooter that was marred by ill-advised marketing and delays, has appeared on Steam. You can download it now.

The game is perhaps more famous for its woeful marketing slogan, “John Romero is about to make you his bitch.” It tanked at review.

It was Romero’s first title at Ion Storm after he parted ways with id Software, which he founded with John Carmack. It was delayed multiple times as it fell behind schedule and through attempts to keep up with whatever amazing new tech Carmack and his company were churning out at the time.

Regardless, it can be yours for £4.99 over on Steam now.

Also, a fun fact I learned from the book Masters of Doom – which you should all ready, by the way – is that the name Daikatana comes from a weapon in a long D&D game created and hosted by Johns Romero and Carmack during the id Software days. True fact.

Any takers?

I don’t think a marketing slogan is ‘woeful’ if you’re still talking about it years after :D

It wasn’t a bad game at all, it just wasn’t an awesome game.
It came out not to long after half-life did and the gameplay was a bit stale in comparison.

Same with Anachronox, a decent game that got wrapped up in the mess that was Ion Storm.

Most of the problem with it really was that it was in development hell for so long. That hasn’t served any game which has suffered that so well, has it?

Anachronox though was a truly lovely game. I’d give that my most vehement recommendation if anyone’s thinking of picking that up. It’s one of the most unusual experiences you’ll have.

actually not accurate. It was John’s (Carmack) D&D campaign. Romero was just a player in it and a really bad one at that. Romero actually killed the campaign with his lust to get the magical daikatana. He traded a book (Demonicron) that other party members had acquired to Demons in exchange for the sword. The book pretty much gave demons control of the verse and killed off every living creature. Still really pissed about that after having played in carmack’s campaign for several years having Romero take over and destroy everything…. well it resembles what happened at ID. I guess romero is teaching now.. Those who can do… Romero’s character’s name was Tyketto. he was a thief/warrior class if I remember correctly.
