Lightning strikes Final Fantasy 14

Thursday, 26th September 2013 15:09 GMT By Dave Owen

Lightning is becoming rather a popular Final Fantasy character, as you’ll now find her mooching around in Final Fantasy 14. The star of Final Fantasy 13, 13-2, and Lightning Returns will be part of a Full Active Time Event in Square-Enix’s recently relaunched MMORPG. We have video!

This means that players will be able to fight alongside Lightning and, upon completion of the event, get their hands on weapons and armour modeled after Lightning Returns. Female characters will get a costume of Lightning herself, while male characters will get a Snow costume. Which is quite nice, really.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

It’s not accurate to say that she’s popular, and that the reason she’s in FF14 is because she’s popular.

    1) She’s only as popular as you would expect a main character of a main, heavily marketed entry of a major flagship franchise to be.
    2) She’s only being added to FF14 because Squeenix is trying their damnedest to promote and sell Lightning due to Lightning Returns coming out soon. It’s less “added content” and more “playable advertisement.”

Saying she’s in FF14 because she’s “popular” implies there’s excessive consumer demand for more content of her when there’s absolutely nothing to suggest that, and it also implies this would be happening even if Lightning Returns was not coming out. Yes, there are people that want more of Lightning, but not any more than you would see of Squall or Yuna after games devoted to them.

@1 – In other words, Salarta doesn’t like her, so she’s not popular. Oh wait, Salarta didn’t even play either game, but still think he’s somehow enough of an expert to talk about them.

Next thing you know, he’ll say the new Lara Croft isn’t popular either.

In my opinion, a word that Salarta doesn’t understand is different from fact, Lightning is THE best female character in the entire series. When she punched Snow, she won me over.

Feels to me she’s only popular inside square enix and not with fans.

I really, REALLY want to like lightning since she’s a female lead and that’s something we just don’t get enough of. But I don’t. That’s not to say I dislike her either.. it’s just I haven’t seen much of a personality in her at all (completed FFXIII, 2 hours into XIII-2)

In all honesty I found fang a much stronger and more interesting, believable and emotional character and was genuinely upset how things went with her. Not to mention she was hotter. ;)

She was “popular” in a recent Japanese polls because she’s well, the most recent. Votes are always skewed in polls like that to the most recent stuff. Within a game or two nobody will care.

In the west, FFXIII has been heavily blasted for its countless flaws and problems. Not the least of which is the game’s characters and stories. She is bland, tedious and boring. The game has almost no character development. Almost the entire story is forced melodrama and monotonous exposition, and the character archetypes of the main cast are rammed down your throat so much that they main characters lose any relatable identity whatsoever.

    Walk down a corridor.
    People talk.
    Walk down another corridor.
    People talk.
    Walk down yet another corridor.
    People talk.

Nothing ever HAPPENS in the story until the last few hours. They *literally* spend most of the story not knowing what they’re supposed to be doing. God, it makes FVIII look like a good story in comparison.

We were tired of Lightning, Snow, etc. by the START of the first game. Nobody wants more of it. The entire FFXIII series of games have been a hideous mess. XV doesn’t look like its going to be much of an improvement.

Agreed in most part but I did enjoy the Fang/Vanille storyline – it could have done with padding out more, there’s so much they could have done with the story & history since those two were on Pulse ages ago. But no.. instead continue the series with Miss. Generic, add a new Mr. Generic and focus on time travel. Wut.

I didn’t like Vanille much as a character but Fang was very cool – just the right amount of attitude and sass.

    Everyone else was… bland.

Their story would have been much better if the whole pseudo-lesbian thing didn’t exist in the game purely for the sake of fanservice. Either grow the balls to present characters as gay or go home. It just comes across as juvenile wank fantasy otherwise.

Fang and Sazh were about the only characters in the whole game that I could tolerate, and that’s solely because they were the only ones that weren’t a giant clusterfuck of self obsessed angst.

As for the story after the first game… Holy Joseph, what a mess.

@9 Yeah it would have been nice to see actual lesbian characters in a video game.. Has it ever happened yet? Depressingly I feel it’ll never happen in our lifetime, not in Japanese games anyway (lesbian “relationships” seem to be an alien concept to them, lesbianism exists purely for fan service like you say).

That said I am not 100% sure they are intentionally portraying them as gay, they don’t really do anything particularly romantic, if I recall they don’t even kiss. Clearly there’s affection, but that just makes them more human compared to most of the others.
