FIFA 14′s Australian promo is certainly a thing

Thursday, 26th September 2013 06:54 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Australian gamers and press have been a little awestruck today by the release of a local promotional video for FIFA 14 which contains no gameplay, no discussion of the game’s features, and nobody playing soccer.

What it has in spades is a lot of cheesy Australian sayings nobody ever uses, and local soccer hero Tim Cahill eyeing off a bunch of women doing aerobics. Nobody is sure why, or what this means, and whether it’s a clever marketing ploy to go viral. On the chance it’s that last option, I will restrain my urge to write a blistering editorial.

FIFA 14 is out now in North America on current-gen systems, and hits Europe on September 27. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are due in November.

This is fucking awful on every conceptual level. And yet still less of an embarrassment than our last election. Damn it.

What happened to the days where we didn’t have to take everything seriously?

Unfortunately that’s not true, since it’s got itself a news story, and thousands of views it wouldn’t have otherwise have had. If it was a traditional FIFA advert, we probably wouldn’t have even watched it.

The goal of marketing is to get you talking about the ad and thinking about the product. Like it or not, this video is an absolute triumph in that respect.

I guess that much is true. Anyone who is going to buy Fifa 14 was already going to buy it. Any attention they can get from outside those demographics are certainly going to translate into sales.

I still feel like with that strategy they could have done something with more entertainment value than this insulting cringe fest.

well, their goal was for gaming sites to write about it.

    Mission Accomplished.
