Saints Row 4 “GATV” and “Wild West” DLC out now on Steam, trailer inside

Tuesday, 17th September 2013 09:02 GMT By Dave Cook

Saints Row 4 developer Volition Inc has published its “GATV” pack on Steam. It’s a costume bundle based on Johnny Gat and an obvious wee dig at the launch of GTA V. Chortle and guffaw yourself dry inside.

An image of the pack was leaked yesterday, check it out here.

The pack is out now on Steam and is entirely free. The freebie ends on September 18.

The mad descriptor reads, “Want to buy GAT V on PC? Too bad! Because we made the GAT V pack FREE on Steam for today only!” and seems to stick the knife in a bit that there isn’t a GTA V release on PC yet.

“It’s the moment every gamer has been waiting for: GAT V is here! Dress up as star-crossed lovers Gat and Aisha and strap on a heavy machine gun and a combat knife launcher for the ultimate Saints Row experience.”

Here’s the Wild West DLC trailer:

The pack includes a fitting cowboy outfit, a wild west dress and a Western themed shotgun and revolver.

Both DLC bundles are out on PC and consoles in North America today. They launch Wednesday everywhere else. They’ll run you $2.99 2.99 Euro, £2.39 GBP on PS3 or £1.99 GBP on Xbox 360.

We’ve got images below. Let us know if you pick it up.

Oh Volition. You have the heart, soul, and cheekiness that Rockstar lacks. Rockstar is being so pretentious in its desire to be a film that it’s lost sight of being a game. I mean, come on, if I had the choice between going bowling and playing darts, or doing the fraud activity in SR IV, which should I choose?

Obviously, since my sense of humour/fun hasn’t dessicated, and since my inner-child hasn’t been ruthlessly slaughtered by peer pressure, I’m going to choose ragdolling all over the place.

Grand Theft Auto gets more and more pretentious all the time, and in doing so it’s just a really boring interactive action movie. It truly is so pretentious, dull, and complete bullshit all at the same time. If I wanted a good action movie, I’d sit in front of the TV for that. If I wanted a good game, then I have Saints Row IV. GTA doesn’t manage to be either.

And yeah, in GTA, I might be chauffeuring around an annoying ‘old country’ foreign stereotype (in the vein of the worst action films ever), but in Saints Row IV I’m having crazy fun whilst piloting a mech or taking on a Godzilla-sized anthropomorphised soda can.

That’s just it. There’s no bullshit to Saints Row IV, it’s entirely humble in just how much of a game it is. If you want to be a movie, be a movie, and stop polluting my hobby with your nonsense. If you want to be an experience, then be meaningful, beautiful, and/or poignant. If you want to be a game, then be fun, and entertaining, and don’t take yourself seriously.

I know where all the soul of the Grand Theft Auto series went after the top-down original. It all went to Volition, who’re passionate about making the games they want to make, rather than just making games for the lowest common denominator who’ve been brainwashed into upholding a fetishistic need for realism.

Me? I want fun. Give me fun, damn it. Video games are supposed to be fun. GTA is not fun.

That said! If you’re not aware of what happened with the #GATV Twitter hash tag, I suggest you look into it. It’s got a good few laughs. Especially that CNN promoted Saints Row accidentally rather than GTA, as they’d intended. Whoops!
