Gears of War Xbox One: Spencer asks fans to query Epic

Tuesday, 17th September 2013 23:17 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Microsoft Game Studios vice president Phil Spencer has said you should ask Epic Games why Gears of War isn’t headed to Xbox One.

In a Famitsu interview translated by DualShockers, Spencer was asked whether Gears of War is headed to Xbox One.

“Gears of War is developed by Epic Games, and they’ve been our partners for a long time on Xbox 360. You should ask Epic Games about what they want to do,” he said.

“We haven’t announced anything yet about Gears of War, but we hope to bring it to Xbox One in some form. However, there’s nothing more I can tell you at this time.”

Spencer’s reference to asking Epic about the project is interesting, as is his mention of “hoping” to bring the franchise to Xbox One; that sounds far less solid an arrangement than the franchise’s history would suggest. That said, Gears of War: Judgment was quite under-marketed compared to previous entries, which may have soured relationships between the two companies.

We did have a theory that Epic Games had given Gears of War: Judgment to People Can Fly so it could get on with the franchise’s first Xbox One instalment – explaining the developer’s long triple-A silence – but perhaps the departure of Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski had more impact on the property’s future than we expected.

Thanks, Dark.

    The new version will be called “Gears of 900p”

  3. Erthazus

    Just for 500$

    New Unreal/UT from Epic. They’re wasting their time trying to prop up the Gears series, as it keeps threatening to totter over, and is by contract necessity only available to a limited audience number.

    The Gears of War franchise has always broke 5 million units sold on the Xbox 360. Gears of War Judgement has even broke 1.75K. And North American sales are lower than 1 million units sold.

    Xbox players got tired of it. It obviously needs a break.

    @5 nah i wouldnt say it failed because people were tired of it, it failed because it wasnt gears of war

    @6 I never said it failed. I just said it needs a break. People got tired of the franchise.

    MS has a install base of 78 million and they can’t sell more than 2 million copies of their flagship franchise outside of Halo?

    People got tired of it. Same goes for GOW Ascension.

    @9…you are just as bad as he is. Just because the crapstation 4 doesn’t release any good news doesn’t mean u need to troll all the xb1 stuff….go play little big planet

    man I just love being called a troll, it’s a new experience for me lol.

    Admittedly I just cant help myself sometimes regarding the Xbone, i am sorry if i have hurt Xbox fanboys, the truth hurts sometimes.

    @!2 – me too Erth, I want a new Unreal Championship!

    @10 yeah you are kinda right, there are quite afew reasons to why it failed imo, main reasons why i think it didnt do well was because they released it way to early after the third game, the game was also lazy as fuck, barely any content in it, people can fly or people who cant make games did most of the horrible shit

    #10 Go fix your own stuff before critizing what the other companies with the actual new ideas and new games are doing. People are tired of you too, shitting out a new Mario, Zelda remake or handheld port every year for over 30 years and even without any significant third party support.

    @12/14 There’s plenty of room to build from Unreal Championship, so I’d go with seeing a new one of those. A sequel to The Liandri Conflict built today, could be spectacular!

    I would also *love* to play a sequel to ‘Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict’ – that’s still my all-time favourite competitive multiplayer experience.

    Damn Gears Of War! Epic needs to come up with something new, fresh and well Epic. I’ll even take it at 900p.

    Do you guys really want another Gears? I mean, I loved the game. It was the sole reason I had XBL Gold at the time. But the reality is Gears 1 was the best. None of them lived up to the 1st game. Raam was just the badass bad guy and the core multiplayer was just beautiful to play. The story really started to suck in 2…, the multiplayer was awesome too.. but damn the story to get lame.
    3… it was terrible. The
    I never liked the multiplayer much either. But Judgement was proof it was a tired franchise and was being milked hard. It sucked.

    With that said. The IP needs a break. Honestly. Reboot it, make it on Earth and make a better threat than Locust. The whole lambant vs locus thing… such a pathetic story arc.

    @ 2 & 3: haven’t you heard? Killzone on PS4 is 720p … and you laugh at Ryse 900p – less fanboying, more thinking.

    In addition: Ryse main character has 140.000 polygons and it uses Voxel Cone Tracing. Killzones main character is using 40.000 polygons. Still laughing?

    This still doesn’t tell, if the games actually play good or not. But since resolution is so important to you …

    KZ is 1080p. Where did you get 720p from?

    Maybe they’ll finally start releasing them on PC.. This game belongs there. Along with Halo…

    @Francis O
    Agree with you here. It needs a break or a reboot of sorts I think. The last one was seen very much as a non-major release (bit like God of War:A), but even still I suspect Epic would like to rework it in a major way too and breath some fresh life into it. I’d say the say for ND and Uncharted. Undoubtedly the pressure is there for them to chuck out an UC4 on PS4, but they also need to take a step back and do something new with the IP. More open/persistent world maybe?

    @ DOCLEXFISTI dude. lol, Did you miss the Crytek presentation? Or dont you have tech knowledge at all?
    That polygon count for Marius is based on “relevent LOD”. There is a screengrab for that.
    Have you played Uncharted 2,3? Do you think its appropriate to say the inengine pre-rendered cutscenes have the same LOD models as the in game gameplay does? lol,
    Crytek spewing pre-rendered cutscene numbers.

    It isnt magic in either console.
    X1=7790 12CUs 16ROPS. 1.2TFlops.
    PS4= 7870. 18CUs. 32 ROPS. 1.8TFlops.

    for you information though, KZ:SF= 1080P 30FPS in SP.
    1080P 60FPGS in MP.

    If Xbone is so powerful, secret sauce and all, why is Dead Rising struggling to reach 30FPS? with 360 level texture+game world too?

    Stop trolling kid.
