Microsoft buys ‘Xbone.com’ domain, Major Nelson deems it disrespectful

Thursday, 12 September 2013 10:54 GMT By Dave Cook

Microsoft has bought the web domain ‘Xbone.com’, after the popular nickname for Xbox One was been deemed disrespectful by Major Nelson.

Fusible reports that the domain’s WHOIS records show that Microsoft has indeed acquired the Xbone.com domain.

Last week, Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb took to NeoGAF to discuss the moniker, and added, “I don’t like it…it disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it’s cheeky but I don’t care for it myself.”

What do you think of the above?

Seems to be more of an internet thing. I’ve never actually meet anyone in real life, in everyday conversation, who has referred to it as the “XBone”. I think it sounds stupid and not really all that clever, but that’s just me.

so now they take down internet sites that shorten the name of their product. talk about being butthurt, i guess this is their way of winning back the customers, with censorship.

Yes, it’s disrespectful I suppose. But expecting the internet to honour respect is madness. This goes double for the gaming culture portion of the internet.

I can empathise with his viewpoint – but then, sure, he’s already invested years and effort into the product and working with others that have done the same. Few others will be coming from that perspective though.

I’d also suggest Larry has a chat with his friend Aaron on the topic of ‘respect’.

Anyway, to make my comment applicable to the actual news article, Major Nelson or whoever came up with the name XBox One should’ve expected XBone. People like to shorten names, it’s why Square-Enix gets called Squeenix even by big fans of the company, and Microsoft pretty much set up the name perfectly for that kind of shortening.

    #82 1 year ago
  83. Dendroball

@111 I’m sorry but we are way beyond the pseudo-modding matter, when you read cocksucker and faggot in regular instances in the previous comments, we can consider moderation is needed (or maybe I’m wrong and this website is out of the realm of good manners). Free speech is good but not when it’s used vulgarly in order to start flame wars, what’s the point of allowing this behaviour ?

I’m sure you’re aware that your behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated on mostly all respectable websites/forums around the internet.

Wow. I just came in here to say what salarta said in 126, but the condition of this thread totally took my thoughts in another direction.

Free speech means the government can’t censor what you say. Private sites, on the other hand, can censor whatever they want. Dave, you are being way more forgiving than you need to be. Obvious trolls are obvious.

@106: I agree, but the established term is good enough, even if it isn’t accurate.

Respect? What makes a company that tried to bone their loyal customers feel like they deserve respect at this point? Is it because they changed their policies only after public revolt? I don’t know, I feel like Xbox is very deserving of the obviously disrespectful moniker.

    #101 1 year ago
  102. OwnedWhenStoned

  103. Ekona

    Anyways…

I refer to the Xbox One as an Xbone now too, despite the fact that it’s my console of choice. At first the term irritated me too as it’s a bit childish, but then I decided that I would reclaim the word, much in the way that some folks do with ‘nigger’ and ‘queer’, and now I rejoice in the usage of it.

It’s always going to be used now it’s out there, so I see no reason to not try and embrace it. At least that way, it would annoy me slightly less. Maybe slightly illogical, but if you can’t beat ‘em then join ‘em!

    #106 1 year ago
  107. salarta

@165: That’s a pretty good approach, I think. Besides, there’s absolutely nothing about the term XBone that’s in itself bad or disrespectful. It sounds disrespectful because it’s silly and sounds a lot like “boner,” which people are starting to remember (thanks to that one old Batman comic) used to mean the same thing as screwing up. But a good marketing campaign could spin that one around, maybe use it to suggest mature content or something along those lines. It just takes the right spin and enough people adopting it.

  108. Dave Cook

@175 Go for it. Go get him :)

    #108 1 year ago
  109. salarta

@170: Being serious about the twilight situation for a moment, I hesitate on just rushing to such a conclusion if it’s based purely on the person exhibiting undesired behavior. I’ve dealt with cases on other sites where users that hated me or things I said (mostly on GameFAQs, when I posted there more often) would claim I was some other absolutely horrendous user sockpuppeting about, and other users were also claimed to be me on a new account just for liking the same characters.

Now if it’s based on IP addresses or the same two people saying almost the exact same things, then I can see the assumption being reasonable. But in this case, it could just be two different people both displaying bad behavior.

@175: Eat him out, eh? :)

@241 Dude, dude, dude…. Who the fuck cares?

The guy could make 50 different tumblrs dedicated to photoshopping dicks in Dave Cooks mouth – Why on earth would Dave Cook care? Let alone refrain from banning his ass.

I understand that he’s been through some bad shit in the press, naming and shaming and all, but you gotta have a backbone, and you gotta stand up for what you do, instead of bowing to any anonymous internet troll who may or may not write nasty (and undoubtedly false) things about you somewhere that absolutely no one gives a fuck about.

This is like the internet version of a Monty Python skit from hell. Except everyone is totally serious, so it’s a million times more absurd.

Holy crap. Troll level = NUKULAR.

    #159 1 year ago
  160. salarta

Dave, I sent a message to your boss about this through the contact form. :D

Also, I can see the risk of problems with or without banning this guy. He seems like someone that will stick around to troll and screw threads up constantly, but this has gone so far and for so long now that I can see trolls rushing in to take advantage whether he’s banned or not.

I think the real questions are, will he get bored and go away, how long will he be put up with before he actually IS banned if he doesn’t, and how much worse could the situation be the longer it’s not dealt with?

    #166 1 year ago
  167. Eregol

@159 (Numbering has gone squiffy now) DSB: Yes, he could, and there’d be the majority who would pay him no mind, but a website depends on it’s traffic, and for every 100 people that would ignore a shitty blog, there’s one that may read it. People can be influenced, and if they spread it then it’s influence can be far reaching.

@163 Yeah, it must’ve been really unpleasant. But that stuff is history, and as long as you can vouch for what you do, all those insults should just be water off your back. Clearly everybody appreciates your work, and I don’t think anyone honestly believes you’re a shill.

Whatever you do, just don’t feed the trolls. It’s really a mogwai/gremlin disposition. It’s better to keep ‘em begging than to have a gremlin dancing on your face.

@167 Either way, if an anonymous internet troll talking garbage is enough to keep you from maintaining your site, you’re really not helping anyone.

A few bad words on Google may be a bummer, but if you look up Dave Cook you’ll find a lot more proper articles that I think carry a lot more weight. He doesn’t have the worst wikipedia stub in the world.

    “No personal insults.”

Then why isn’t Da Man banned? Every single pos he makes is “personal insults”.

Just to give a recent example: http://www.vg247.com/forum/topic.php?id=41998&page=1

Purely for discussing something that interested them.

Edit: So I’ve just been politely informed that Da Man can no longer post on the site. Hahahaha. I’ve been given the freedom and go ahead to delete any abusive post he makes on the forums.

It seems to me that it would be much easier just to delete his entire account, but at least some justice is being administered on the site. Makes me feel far more comfortable about posting.

Thank you to the staff for putting your foot down where its needed. Nice to see some positive change finally occurring.

    #175 1 year ago
  176. Stephany Nunneley

    @all

No problem! Insults don’t personally bother me. They roll off my back like water on a duck’s back (I have brothers and the youngest is a hateful little shit). But I won’t tolerate it being dished out to others and having to remove 4 pages worth of “internetz rage” drivel from the site was just uncalled for. My ban finger has been sated for now though. :D

Like I said, I am just sorry I didn’t see this earlier or it would have been dealt with in a more quick manner.

Anything abusive – as in excessive – will not be tolerated. Now, if someone calls you a wanker a few times just deal with it – but there is a line. Adults know “the line” but childish trolls do not and will be dealt with accordingly.

There was just a random internet troll who started trolling about anyone who called the Xbox One with the name Xbone, something about Major Nelson’s rectum, those who have some interaction with it. Also making ironic and homophobic puns, accusing Dave of racism and shit like that.

Im American, I visit this site every single day multiple times, I think the staff is great, the site is better than the other sites ot there in my honest opinion, and I have NEVER one single time witnessed anyone of the VG247 staff ever say anything remotely discriminating towards Americans, Hell sometimes I don’t like the attitude, or agee with the actions of the general populace in America, but that doesnt make me anti-American. Assulting someone or a group of people for sexual prefference is just out of line. I don’t have to agree with a persons lifestyle, thats their choice and right to live the way they see fit. If this guy that got banned recieved it for anti homosexual comments and hate, then power to the site. You could be Superman, not just some common soldier, make horrible remarks and harbour hatred and guess what….YOUR NO LONGER SUPERMAN, JUST A SUPER JERK.

I say this to fellow Americans, think about something before you put your foot in your mouth, mabey some people hate us for where we come from thats a given, but even some Americans dislike Americans, in the end our place of birth and where we are raised is our lineage, and the title we are given. Humanity is humanity the world over no matter where you come from. The world would be a better place if we all had a lot more love in our hearts. Its ignorance that causes divison and strife, and next time you feel wronged, take a long look in the mirror and chances could be that the grief you recieve from others might be a reflection of the manners you show to others, and in general its seldom to do with where you come from.

Heros don’t scorn, face the odds for personal gain, or hurt those they protect no matter their beliefs. Heros rise above the call in selflessness, thats what defines a true hero. Just because A guy gets wounded fighting, or is a soldier, it doesnt make him a hero.

    Keep your head up Dave.

    Lol Michael lol.

As far as The Xbox One, and Nelson not liking Xbone, I think they should have given the console a better name anyway.

I refer to it as X1.

    #199 1 year ago
  200. Ireland Michael

@199 Personally I think Xbones is a far more interesting name than what we have now, if for no other reason than the fact that the current name has made me have to refer to the older machine as “the original Xbox”. Ugh.

@202 I think we’re really onto something here.

You should work in the industry.

Call it something like the Gaping Maw of Mutilation. I’d buy that.

And people would really expect draconian DRM on a box like that. It’s supposed to be painful.

    You sir, are a genius!

And whenever you start it up, the splash screen will be Steve Ballmer jump-scaring you, like just hopping into the frame and going “AAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!”.

I could keep editing this post all day.

He does realize that it’s going to be universally used as the informal name for the system, and that he himself will be using it in a blog update within 2 years, right? OK.

I mean, what the hell does Microsoft’s marketing wizards think we’re going to call it? The “Xbox 1?” There already was an Xbox 1.

How does a company as rich as Microsoft staff itself so deeply with tone-deaf idiots?

  208. Kreion

    @207

…the X1, one, X-one, look at that it really was difficult to come up with names that didn’t spawn from the juvenile rage which the internet is partly comprised of.

And no one calls the original Xbox the Xbox 1, they never have and now they never will. Everyone just called it the Xbox because unlike the Playstation it didn’t go: Original, 2, 3. It went Original, 360. So maybe you should go back to the hole you crawled out of hmm?
