Nintendo is in a “very difficult position,” could be “on the path to irrelevance” – Bushnell

Saturday, 7 September 2013 20:22 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell feels Nintendo is in a “very difficult position” and that continuing to target the 12 and under generation, could put the firm “on the path to irrelevance”.

He also previously stated he was baffled by Wii U.

Speaking with the BBC, Bushnell feels dedicated gaming handhelds “don’t make sense anymore,” when iPod, iPhone, tablets and Android devices do that and more.

“When it comes to the console market, I think the market is truncating,” he said. “Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people – they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over and now I think the other [consoles] are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important.”

Bushnell has previously said he also feels mobile gaming is “on the way out” as the industry reinvents itself “every five years”. He does feel Oculus Rift and other virtual reality devices are the next wave of gaming.

Thanks, Nintendo Life.

What should they do? Make a console that’s the same as the other 2 so we have 3 similar consoles fighting for the same place?

And what exactly is wrong with that? Wouldn’t they all be fighting to make a better console thus granting more value to consumer (possibly). Competition is what keeps competitors on their toes.

And please someone entertain this thought what in gods name is wrong with Nintendo having a console on par with next gen, on par with third party releases etc etc. And no one spout to be different: having little to no third party games is not worth being different in fact having less games isn’t worthy of the rank being different.

@6 – That’s like saying, Sony and Microsoft just have one hit product in the market, the Playstation and Xbox. What happens if they lose their only stronghold?

The 3DS is selling extremely well. And Nintendo doesn’t just attract 12-year olds. There are lots of people who enjoy Nintendo franchises. As long as Nintendo can keep their consoles at a lower price, they should be fine.

Yup. They lost the mobile division, which accounted for more than 50% of their revenues.

    great gifs lb!

imo guy is very wrong. i know i know, nobody expected me to say that but let me explain…ninteno unifies the ninty id’s 3ds/wiiu now. they started to implement 3ds game apps on wiiu (animal crossing plaza) and will probably do that vice versa on the 3ds, wiiu pricedrop is coming, bundles are coming, great games are coming as well.
2ds could become a hit. i think it’s a very clever idea. it can make more people interested in the wiiu too if they push that crossplatform stuff more.
the wiiu is a rock solid console. it’s a very modern device too, it’s different to it’s competition and that’s a good thing. they have to spread that message more. much more. i wouldn’t write the wiiu off just yet.

Ninty had lots of money during wii,ds era. They could have started so many things, just at an experimental level at the start.

There you go. A ninty style idea.

Sorry, but we are not going to agree on this one.

Their games use the same characters but diversify more than most. Luigi’s Mansion compared to Mario Kart for example.

Both containing the same character, both solid hits with completely different gameplay. That’s diversity if you ask me.

Also, control methods and innovation are things that other companies try to challenge Nintendo on, they are widely seen as innovators in these areas.

If you mean new IP’s, well, that’s a matter of preference, and why I own multiple consoles. I like to mix it up.

New IPs are great, but when they are average, what’s the point? Sony seem to take a ‘if you throw enough shit at a fan, some of its going to stick’ approach to IPs.

Check out the Puppeteer Eurogamer review:

    6/10 with prime quotes like:

“There’s no sense of evolution or escalation; Puppeteer constantly feels on the verge of blossoming into something richer and deeper, but never quite gets around to it. Strip away the lovely theatrical staging, with its dynamic scenery changes and boundless energy, and look past the charmingly detailed wooden characters, and you’re left with a fairly ordinary platform game. For all the arts and craft materials it evokes in its appearance, there’s no glue holding it all together.”

Now, I’ve just tried the demo on PSN, and this WAS a game I was very interested in, Sony just seem to have a habit of offering style over substance.

Of course I digress, you may not have been talking about new IPs / Diversity, if not, please elaborate.

As JM said, it’s all in the public domain, what’s the problem?

“I seriously don’t understand why are people so resistant to change.”

The Puppeteer review? Thats just one person’s opinion:
GamingTrend: 9.3/10 “This is your imagination come to life. In a holiday season filled with sequels, heists, and all the action games you can imagine, Puppeteer is different…and different is good.” And its used the word i used above how fitting.

By diversify i mean more new IPs, they need to get out of their comfort zone, X yes thats a good step, that new franchise no one knows. They are depending on the same character for it to be a runaway success, theres absolutely no reason why they couldn’t have stuck “new franchises e.g Mario Galaxy” with a new character. They need to try new/old genres. What i mean by diversify is grow their catalog of games, new IPs/Revivals try to cater to a broader audience which is what Nintendo said they will do but haven’t yet.

“Nintendo can diversify its not that hard, didn’t someone say Nintendo titles have that magical, special feeling. and someone else said their franchises can’t be rivalled, well if they diversified more magical Nintendo titles that can’t be rivalled”

And if their franchises can’t be rivalled that means… That people will have to…

    I’ve created a forum thread on this…

There are plenty of Wii U exclusives no one is interested in. Miyamoto is creating a new IP, they are handing existing franchises out to new studios…

Old franchises are still scoring highly and selling. Other companies are continuing to fail at bettering Nintendo games…

At some point, I wish people would just be honest with themselves and admit they don’t like Nintendo as a whole.

I have a PS3 for all the ‘cool fresh IP’s I can’t get on other systems’… Guess what, it’s not all its cracked up to be…

As I said, many games are style over substance. I’m glad I’ve had a chance to play them, but they hardly go down in my all time gaming greats.

As for the Puppeteer review, I choose it specifically because I played the demo, and agree with what I have played so far. I will pick the game up as its cheap, but again, It’s hardly ‘one for the ages’…

Bushnell just exists to talk shit these days, doesn’t he? While it’s an undisputable fact that the Wii U is a crashing failure at the moment, the 3DS is a hugely successful system and is more than enough to sustain Nintendo for the time being.

Yes, they have a ton of work to do as far as the home console market goes, but they are the kings of the portable market. If they canceled the Wii U right now and never did another home console, they’d still be fine from portable sales alone.

@46 – Sony have the Vita, which, just like the Wii U, is doing pretty shitty at the moment. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Sony should get out of the portable market and Nintendo should get out of the console market and they’d both be fine.

I don’t understand this argument that the 3DS is ”doing extremely good”

It’s not doing THAT good, when comparing it with the DS in its period of time, 3DS has sold worser.

This company needs to go third party, I wanna see companies like Apple, Bethesda, Google or maybe Sega entering the hardware market again.

    #54 2 years ago
  55. Lengendaryboss

Well is it not doing well on its own?

But yes its not reaching DS levels.

You must really want Nintendo games on your beloved Xbox to preach this much you want them to go third party.

    #55 2 years ago
  56. Professor Zoom

#55 Yeah, it would be great to see Mario Kart or maybe Star Fox on Xbox, they need to be owned by Microsoft, people are practically only buying a Nintendo system to play Mario or Zelda.

you want to answer my question?

How much money did Sony lose on the PS3?

There is no reason for Nintendo to get out of the console business. They have plenty of Money in the bank and will build momentum with their big titles coming out this year and next year.

Sony doesn’t need to leave the portable market, they just need to release some damn games on their system and it would be fine.

    #60 2 years ago
  61. Lengendaryboss

Okay, A lot, but i don’t care, it ain’t my money/loss/problem and it isn’t relevant to my post to kissup ergo you :)

#60 How are 101 or Windwaker big titles? When Beyond Good Evil HD, Worms Ultimate Mayhem, Crysis 1 and Doom 3 BFG edition came out on the Xbox and PS3 they weren’t considered big titles at all.

  63. pcbros

So when people say that Nintendo needs to diversify, are we talking about the development of the rumored Call of Koopa : Modern Shroomfare?

It’s an exciting NEW idea… it will be an First-person shooter, where players control Mario. You can customize your weapons, there will be killstreaks and jetpacks. This revolution in gaming will blow your minds! :P

Actually, making a first-person Mario game (a la Mirror’s Edge) would be interesting. Hmmm… I should sell this idea to Nintendo.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. Lengendaryboss

“they just need to release some damn games on their system and it would be fine.”
Why do i feel like i have seen and have been involved in this exact same conversation before?

    Sony/Third Parties:
    Dead Nation/Rayman Legends
GOW 1+2 Collection/Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate
Invisimals The Alliance/Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Collection
    Tearaway/Vahalla Knights 3
    Freedom Wars/DBZ Battle Of Z
    Destiny Of Sprits/Demon Gaze
    Killzone Mercenary/FIFA 14/WRC4

Added to the list: Minecraft, Borderlands 2, Football Manager Classic 2014, Rime, Bigfest, Murasaki Baby.

Third time i had to link that comment, if you honestly think Sony isn’t supporting PS Vita you need to head to specsavers.

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Lengendaryboss

Thats not what i meant, or whatever the original poster meant.

But i don’t want to repeat myself so see @23/38.

But in some way that would be diversifying no matter how much i condemn COD/ COD Clones.

Hold it! You will get him (Or Polygem) saying his usual “Wii U will be fine once Pikmin 3 releases oh wait. Once The Wonderful 101 releases oh wait. Once Game A, B, C, D, E, F Releases…

Or my favourite “if Pikmin 3 can do a small bump for Wii U sales just imagine what Zelda, Donkey Kong, Sonic and Mario will do for Wii U…”

    #67 2 years ago
  68. polygem

@64: but wiiu games are finally coming. iwata also said they will look more into crossover games like the upcoming fire emblem X shin megami title because it wont need as much dev power if you split it. they also push indies atm. things are happening. it took long but it’s actually happening now.

    #68 2 years ago
  69. pcbros

@62 – You do know it’s all about preference right? Earthbound is one of my favorite games, yet some people might not think it’s that great.

Some people will see all these FPS games coming out (ex. COD:G, BF4, Killzone, Halo, etc) and say, “Another crappy FPS?! How original…”

I personally can see the good in most games. I don’t judge games just because they don’t have the magical “bloom” effect or killstreaks.

Wind Waker is a remake, but if the game being remade was one of your favorite games (and you haven’t played it in over 10 years), then it will be a big title… in your eyes.

I’m personally sick of FPS games (except Mirror’s Edge). It’s the same crap with different skins and little extras.

I find it funny people here are saying Nintendo should exist the hardware biz yet Sony lost 3.5 billion on the PS3 and the PS Vita is failing at the moment.

I’m not a kissup to Ninty, I’m just tired of all fucking dumbasses that bash Nintendo even though they make great games. The only genres they don’t do are shooters…. they got platformers, RPGs, Action, Strategy, Puzzle, ect

And yeah, you’re a keyboard warrior asshole. Deal with it.

Dude, the games you mentioned are good, but are those games are not going to move systems like Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Kart, ect.

And a lot of those games have superior console ports. The PS Vita needs big exclusives. Rayman Legends is cool, but you know the console versions are going to be the versions people pick up.

    Exclusives >>>>> 3rd party ports

  71. DSB

I’m glad that Steph included some of his other ridiculous statements towards the end of the article.

It’s really, really rich to have a guy like Bushnell talking about other people leading their companies into irrelevance.

Remember when Atari really kicked ass? Yeah, me neither!

The Wii U could well be a terrible mistake, that’s absolutely plausible, but Nintendo have a lot of money in the bank, and even if they left the console business behind, they would still be a major publisher.

So this is just another case of a confused old man talking nonsense. I think it’s kinda funny.

    #71 2 years ago
  72. polygem

well we know what happened then…

    #72 2 years ago
  73. pcbros

@67 – But in all fairness, the 3DS hit it’s stride when Mario 3D Land (the first must-have 3DS title) was released along with the price cut.

Every system needs a must-have game. The Wii U doesn’t quite have one yet. The Wonderful 101 was great but it was system-selling great.

I predict Super Mario 3D World and X to be the big turing point titles for the Wii U.

@70 – Nintendo exiting the hardware stage and becoming a 3rd-party publisher is the most common statement I hear and I think it’s also the most ironic.

People (like Bushy), complain that Nintendo makes the same kid friendly games over and over again. No diversity. Same thing. Blah… blah…

So why the heck would you want them to focus on games? (@Legendary, I feel like I’ve said this a million times too :))

@71 – Don’t forget his revolutionary Atari Jaguar controller

That phone dial-pad in the bottom was so useful in gaming. It was actually… what’s the word I’m looking for… it was so RELEVANT to gaming.

    #73 2 years ago
  74. Lengendaryboss

Hm your confusing me to say the least:

You said: “they just need to release some damn games on their system and it would be fine.”

Lists bunch of games showing that Sony/Third Parties do indeed support PS Vita.

Then he says “Dude, the games you mentioned are good, but are those games are not going to move systems like Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Kart, ect.” “And a lot of those games have superior console ports.”

Now you retread back to system sellers, i can’t debate that again. I could but you would be blind to see (Specsavers). But to answer your post nowhere did i state these were system sellers but you cannot spout Sony isn’t supporting the PS Vita because you see no system sellers like your beloved franchises above.

“Exclusives >>>>> 3rd party ports” And when you can point out where i said exclusives i’ll be waiting.

“And yeah, you’re a keyboard warrior asshole. Deal with it.”
Yeah i’m still finding someone who gives a fuck literally can’t find anyone, but you can keep it up with your insults.

    #74 2 years ago
  75. Lengendaryboss

I can’t debate diversity any further, Why would i want them to make such games?

    They said this:

    This happened:
    Action speaks louder than words.

I know how many times people/Nintendo fans said Nintendo doesn’t need to make such games and i fail to see the reason beyond being different for this to be logical also i can’t think of a single bad reason why this wouldn’t be good:

I expanded on this at @23/38

Nintendo can diversify its not that hard, didn’t someone say Nintendo titles have that magical, special feeling.

and someone else said their franchises can’t be rivalled, well if they diversified more magical Nintendo titles that can’t be rivalled…

I mean X (Monolith) in my opinion is a good step in that direction, branching out wouldn’t be that bad.

    #75 2 years ago
  76. monkeygourmet

“I mean X (Monolith) in my opinion is a good step in that direction, branching out wouldn’t be that bad.”

The Wii had lots of games like this, the Wii U already has many unique exclusives. People keep spouting the same shit, Nintendo need new IPs, diversity etc…

    It’s right under your noses.

Wii had tons of unique exclusives, many classics yet people couldn’t get over the ‘image’ and thought they were more hardcore sticking with the 360 / PS3.

Remember how annoying it was when people said Vita didn’t have games? It obviously does, doesn’t mean people want it. Same as the Wii U. It would be better if people just admit they don’t want the console no matter what Nintendo to and stop trying to stir or lie to themselves…

    Zombie U
    Bayonetta 2
    Wonderful 101
    Mario Kart
    Donkey Kong
    Pikmin 3

Etc etc, I’m fed up of the list…

Loads of exclusives, from all genres and many unique titles that are out of Nintendo’s ‘comfort zone’…

That’s on top of a online service that revolutionises community. You keep complaining people say:

Wait till xxx game comes out, then you’ll see sales… What about the reverse of that? All these amazing, highly scoring unique games and hardcore gamers aren’t interested? That is way more annoying and a true example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

If Wonderful 101 was a PS4 exclusive, Sony fanboys would be jizzing all over it.

    #76 2 years ago
  77. zinc

Why do any of you care?

I can appreciate a Ninty console owner, defending their purchase etc, but why do you other guys give a singular shit?

This endless spin-cycle of Dragon/monkey/legendary/jm/polygem ego fist fuck over Nintendo is very tedious.

    #77 2 years ago
  78. Francis O

What I meant by games, is games that AREN’T PORTS! UNIQUE EXCLUSIVE games. LIKE THE 3ds. Is this hard to understand? Rayman Legends and DBZ are good, but they are not going to move the PS Vita to sell a lot of units.

Nintendo has exclusive games in all types of genres for all types of people.

RPG – Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, Mario and Luigi Dream Team, Fire Emblem, Monolith Soft X

Puzzle – Fluidity, Pictocross, Brain Age
    Action – The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2
    RTS – Pikmin 3
Platormers – DKC, Mario, Sonic Lost World
    Adventure – Zelda
Sports – Wii Sports Resort, Wii Sports, Sonic and Mario games, Mario Sports Mix
Party games – Wii Party U, Wii Fit U
    Fighting – Super Smash Bros

The only genre they don’t make when it came to the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U is First and 3rd person shooters.

    #78 2 years ago
  79. Clupula

It always annoys me when people call Smash Brothers (or, for that matter, Playstation All Stars) fighting games. They’re party games with touches of fighting mechanic in them. There’s nothing wrong with being a party game. Hell, the creator of the series seems to be really against the idea of the series being competitive, which is pretty much the whole basis for the fighting genre.

But they are as much fighting games as Final Fight and Dragon’s Crown are.

    #79 2 years ago
  80. Lengendaryboss

Maybe i should make this crystal clear:

    Internally made new IPs

    Third Parties/Second Parties
    Zombie U
    Bayonetta 2
    Wonderful 101

I keep an eye on upcoming releases from the big three. If you want to credit Nintendo for titles they didn’t internally develop fine, if you want to credit them for Publishing/Marketing/Funding said titles thats better but giving Nintendo full on credit? I don’t think so.

    “Nintendo’s ‘comfort zone’”
Not Nintendo, but devs not under Nintendo, i’m not giving Nintendo a free pass because they collaborated with outside developers on New IPs and unique titles. I said Monilth X is a step in the right direction because it is a New IP actually made by Nintendo that Nintendo fans seem to like.

“You keep complaining people say: Wait till xxx game comes out, then you’ll see sales”
People LOL what people? Francis is the only one on here, the only one that says over and over again, i’m not complaining at best i’m mocking him.

“If Wonderful 101 was a PS4 exclusive, Sony fanboys would be jizzing all over it.”
Its not, and isn’t that what Nintendo fans do/doing? I mean i see Kamiya twitter page with people “jizzing” all over it.

Overall my point still stands i’m not giving MS full on credit for Dead Rising 3, i’m not giving Sony full on credit when they published FF titles in the early days just like i’m not giving Nintendo full on credit for Bayonetta 2/ TW101. I will only give them full on credit if they are owned, published and internally by Nintendo, just like Sony and MS.

#69 But how are 101, Windwaker or Mario World 3D gonna make me buy a Wii U? Those who wanted to play Mario World or Windwaker probably already played them on the 3DS/Gamecube, so I don’t see how any of those are gonna sell any Wii U’s, give me a reason to buy a Wii U and I’ll buy it, but Fable 1 HD is coming to Xbox 360, and no one is calling it a big game and the 360 is cheaper than the Wii U, why should people still select the Wii U?

”I’m personally sick of FPS games (except Mirror’s Edge). It’s the same crap with different skins and little extras.”

    Covered this at 80.
Games do not extend to your definition “AREN’T PORTS! UNIQUE EXCLUSIVE games” Games are games.

    “Is this hard to understand?”
Very hard since its not in your initial post.

If i were to break down that list i could find a few games NOT BY NINTENDO like Sonic for instance.

Ignoring all the good exclusive games on those retrospective systems…

I think your full of shit tbh.

    Good games are good games.

Whining about semantics and missing out on fun games is cutting off your nose to spite your face. It’s like complaining about Studio Ghibli not making a live action film…

This is what Nintendo does, if you don’t like it play another system and stop bitching.

I assume you own a copy of Chibi Robo? Of course you would want to support Nintendo when they try something new?

Fact is, whatever Nintendo do, certain people will never be happy.

Wii is a good example. Had tons of great exclusives, but all the cool gamers hated it. Slow… Clap… Well done, stupid people missing out on the very games they enjoy because of brand loyalty…

    #84 2 years ago
  85. Lengendaryboss

Apparently having opinions that differ from theirs caused controversy.

Wants more third party games = Nintendo loses what makes them different.
Wants diversity by Nintendo: lists games not made by Nintendo, makes a COD joke etc etc.
Wants New IPs Made by Nintendo: Lists games by Third Parties and Second Parties.
Wants a console on par with the other = again: Nintendo loses what makes them different.

All good things i want for Nintendo rejected because it loses what makes them different.

“LegendaryMcNuggetbrain” LOL says the person who thinks games are defined by the meaning the above, Thinks rely on means sales etc etc.

Think of me as you wish but if you see me wanting better out of Nintendo is bad thing, then fine.

Whose says i’m missing out games? Whose says i ignore good games/exclusive or otherwise; your putting words in my mouth: I never did mention that. I’m just talking about giving credit this does not extend to me not owning the games/owning the games.

I honestly don’t know if your speaking in general or not?

Owned all handhelds and have played each of their consoles at some point, so please don’t stereotype me.

Well my point still stands. Why care?

So Ninty do their thing, so what.

Ninty make a WiiBoxOne4, you really gonna buy it?

Just so you can play those 3rd party games that are on the other two?

Or because you actually like Ninty exclusive’s?

Cuz if its for the exclusive’s, well the WiiU is just fine.

Moaining that the box isn’t powerful enough for you just seems daft.

@82 – “But how are 101, Windwaker or Mario World 3D gonna make me buy a Wii U? Those who wanted to play Mario World or Windwaker probably already played them on the 3DS/Gamecube”

Easily. I enjoy Mario games and after playing Mario Land 3D, I want to play the sequel, so I’ll buy it.

It’s like saying why buy Halo 4 if you already played Halo 3…

Anyways, I’m pulling out of this article. This is obviously a debate based on personal preference. In other words, we won’t get anywhere.

  95. Lengendaryboss

No it wasn’t I linked that on the MGS 5 thread and Xbox “Nothing better” thread.

No one acknowledged it as an attempt to rile people up, it was me knowing this page would get heated and linking gifs as a joke: didn’t know i would be involved heavily.

So if no one on those threads got riled up why does it change when i link it on a Nintendo thread?

My very obvious attempt to rile up Francis was at @48.

    I didn’t see that then.

“So if no one on those threads got riled up why does it change when i link it on a Nintendo thread?”

    Because… History?

You would have to have your head in the sand if you didn’t see the Nintendo stuff that has happened on this site. You even linked an old article recently so you know the drill.

Also, you’ve had continuous scuffles with Francis on Nintendo articles for the last 6 months or so… Plus Dragon / OG etc etc…

Nintendo stuff always kicks off because people always say the same stuff:

    1. Nintendo need new IP’s
    2. Wii U, Wii, 3DS is underpowered
    3. Nintendo should go third party

    Etc etc…

What, the positive articles that Poly and myself comment on?

It’s weird how negative ones attract a certain crowd…

    Thats more like it:

And besides i would have mentioned him outright.

Well i mentioned 1 of those for good reasons, Professor Troll mentioned the latter two for his own trollish like reasons.

As for Francis arguments i could easily stop it but he doesn’t make it easy.

Not going to read through all 100+ comments, so apologies if this has been said already, but I don’t think Nintendo targets only the 12-and-under crowd, I think they simply make games that will appeal to the widest audience possible, the “concerned with fun” crowd, if you will.

The 12 and under crowd are most certainly concerned with fun, but so are people of a lot of other ages. I will admit that, for a few years as a teenager, I didn’t think Nintendo games were “cool” and was turned off by their cartoonish characters, but I got over it, and realised that, while their games may appear “cutesy” they are still great games.

We can’t forget that Nintendo is a Japanese company, and that cuteness/youthfulness are regarded somewhat differently than in the West. So, what appears to be aimed at under 12 to jaded Westerners, may actually appeal to a much wider audience in Japan (and elsewhere).

Every couple of years for the last two decades, a “Nintendo could be dying” meme has begun circulating.

And no emerging threat to Nintendo has been able to overcome the central salient fact: you can only play Nintendo games on Nintendo systems.

For me, the last Nintendo game that sold me a system was Mario 64. But someone certainly seems to have been buying them.

    #112 2 years ago
  113. salarta

The site is claiming I have a duplicate comment, but what I posted isn’t showing up. Going to try to edit in my comment now.

Bushnell’s statement is accurate. Though it’s only one of multiple things wrong with Nintendo at the moment.

Nintendo is currently seen as mostly gimmicks, a lot of flash with little substance except for a few first party titles. The motion controls that didn’t do much for the Wii came off as ambitious but ultimately failed. The 3D for the 3DS later felt a little of a waste as there weren’t really any games people wanted to play on them. And, the Wii U looks completely worthless since it has few games worth playing AND the screen on the controller seems completely pointless, like a gimmick to sell the product.

More importantly, Nintendo is constantly behind Sony and Microsoft in both graphical power and networking on consoles by one generation. This may not sound like a big deal, but it hurts Nintendo getting any multiplatform games. Multiplatform games do not get people to pick one console over anything, but they do give a reason for buying one console over another when one console has a slew of multiplat games that the other does not. The gimmick issue is also hurting Nintendo in some ways. It works out great for games that want to experiment, which in a sense means it might be good for indie games, but it’s a secondary barrier to multiplat releases. “If you want to release the game on this system, you need to put extra work into it not just for porting, but to figuring out how to use the system’s gimmick!”

Another problem: no real games at launch worth buying. The NES ended up becoming popular because 1) it had no real competition because of the state of the industry, and 2) it had one game people wanted to play immediately at launch, and having to wait a couple years for other classics (albeit ones that nobody knew would become classics just yet) was more acceptable back then. Today, Mario games aren’t THE biggest games people want to play. The ones that draw the most interest are The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. The simplest answer to Nintendo’s problems is to have a new installment of all its majors IPs released within a few months, to show that if nothing else, there’s at least 4-5 IPs made by Nintendo themselves that are worth buying.

But now, back to the main problem of the article: Nintendo’s image as a children only console. Legendaryboss posted this link in a thread on the boards: In this link, Reggie claims that the lack of support for games like Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and The Conduit prove there’s no support for mature games on Nintendo systems.

This is such a straw man. Neither game was very heavily promoted, and while the GTA game is a sidegame on a portable (not a main entry), most people didn’t know The Conduit even existed. I wouldn’t have known if not for Kevin Sorbo voice acting in it. They also had Madworld, but the point is, none of these games were heavily promoted.

Today, Bayonetta 2 is being heavily promoted, but I can state for a fact it’s going to bomb restricted to the Wii U no matter how great it is because 1) there aren’t many games on the Wii U that people want to play, and 2) Nintendo’s image as being kids and families only makes people think Bayonetta 2 is going to be stripped of the atmosphere and style that made Bayonetta so great. Which appears partly true already with the controller screen being used to completely bypass the primary gameplay.

Nintendo suffers from a public image problem. People think their consoles are toys for children. They encourage this public image problem by making up excuses for poor sales of mature games (“people don’t want them on our system”) and lack of promotion. Bayonetta 2′s level of promotion is much, much better than past attempts, but it still pales for one reason: lack of any real push and marketing campaign for the acceptance of more mature games on Nintendo consoles.

Nintendo is fighting an uphill battle on the public image front. They have people out there that are adamant Nintendo should never, ever make anything other than toys for kids. However, they also have consumers that pointedly do NOT want to buy a system that only has kids games available with a few mature titles here and there.

Nintendo has a lot they need to fix about themselves if they want to make sure they don’t go the way of Atari. The types of games they offer is just one element, and the best way to deal with that problem is to have a big marketing campaign that shows several really big and meaningful mature IPs available through Nintendo that Nintendo encourages being mature, while also having a campaign that shows they aren’t abandoning child-friendly content. They need both. No such campaign for the kid-friendly stuff means some people will think Nintendo is completely ditching kid-friendly content, and never doing that kind of campaign for mature games makes Nintendo look like they’re so stuck in their kid-friendly image that they actively fight against having mature content on their systems.

i actually think #89 has it right.

i don’t think nintendo needs to be defended though, they can defend themselves and i think their business strategy is right, is strong and not weak, so there’s no need in defending it.
actually this constant use of the ‘defending nintendo’ term only tries to devalue any pro nintendo argument from the get go.this isn’t mature by the way kiddos, this is professional schoolyard bs.

some people seem not to like nintendo games. thats fine, totally fine but why keep bitching about it then?

on this page all the people that are complaining about wiiu do not own a wiiu. this fact speaks volumes, in fact this is all anyone needs to know. i hope he wont be pissed but let me name DrDamn here. he owns one, he criticises the wiiu a lot but he never forgets to point out the positives as well, not using those stereotypes ALL the time on EVERY nintendo article (kids games, no sales they’re doomed should drop wiiu completely, useless gimmick etc etc etc).

it makes no sense at all to discuss in depth with people who simply have no experience and therefore no real knowlege about the product.
shame on me that i even try over and over again. that’s stupid too, i agree.

i said this again, it’s ok to say ‘i don’t like it, it’s not for me, not feeling it’…what stinks is that these guys keep saying that it’s shit, it’s the wrong strategy, it’s immature, not diverse etc and then even devalue gamers who enjoy the system by using the gimmick, kids games etc. argumet.
sure you will have heated discussions then, only natural.

again, if wiiu isn’t for you, stop complaining too much, it’s ok, it’s not for you…others enjoy it, let them do that.

i have lots of negative things to say about the vita for example and i do that, i think it has lots of games but it lacks in quality ones, especially from sony (a problem i cannot see on nintendos side btw). look at uncharted, resistance etc. i still point out positives about that thing wherever i can.
i do that and people who read my posts should know it. monkey as well by the way, og, you name anyone of the so called ndf crew.

i kind of miss exactly this little difference from the constant naysayers, this is why, honestly, their arguments do not really convince me and this is why this same ol’ discussion wont find an end anytime soon.

  116. polygem

@salarta, seriously, the whole kids games argument is so deeply flawed. this stuff could make me mad man :) people refusing to scratch the surface. show me the kids beating skyward sword or dk country returns.
it’s easier to beat any cod game.
if it’s only violence and sex that makes a game mature, count me out, because the way the videogame industry interprets these subjects is very immature.

    #116 2 years ago
  117. polygem

i don’t think nintendo has an image problem, i think many so called hardcore gamers have a problem with their own image, with their own maturity. if anyone thinks playing uncharted alone in your room is more mature than playing mario with your wife, their logic’s flawed.

if you think playing gears of war is more mature than playing donkey kong, again, i think you couldn’t be more wrong.

the last of us is getting a lot of praise for delivering mature content, a real story…and i still think it is very much aimed at teens and young twens. it’s not exactly deep or mature.

dostojewski is, henry miller, john steinbeck…
    this is mature content.

games, all games that i have played in the last 30 years have a childish element. they are games…and that’s great, why hide what they are all about?

this is why i like nintendo games. no masks. focus on whats fun…that doesn’t make them ‘only kids games’.

Not that I think Nintendo will be going anywhere soon but they could make a killing by ‘doing a SEGA’ and releasing Mario onto multi-formats
They be up there with COD etc sales wise but actually be a good game

I haven’t bought a Wii U yet, I had a Wii and loved about 8-10 games but other than that it just gathered dust

I have to say though, iOS games are catching up. You’ve got Baldur’s Gate, XCOM and a couple developers have already started to make the jump from DS to iOS like Capcom with Ace Attorney and Level-5 with Layton.

Right now, software is the only thing that Nintendo has got going on with the 3DS but that might well change in the not-so-near future since they’re actually more powerful than the 3DS and once the 3rd party support start to dwindle, it’s game over.

    - Dude you are so full of shit its not funny. It’s true, positive articles on Nintendo equals no comments, negative articles – here comes Dragon and Clupula spewing their Bullshit backed up by little but their own imagination.

You, Dragon, and Clupula have no knowledge of Nintendo (you thought GameFreak and Monolith Soft were second party developers for Nintendo, LOL!) or the gaming industry, you’re just jackasses on VG247. Nothing more nothing less.

Clupula got a YouTube nobody subscribes to because he’s boring and has nothing interesting to say. Dragon actually thinks Sony is fine when they lost 3.5 billion on the PS3 and the PS Vita is currently not selling well.

Then there is your ass who thinks Nintendo only has like two genres or something when in actuality they have games in damn near every genre but first person shooter.

Clupula says Smash Bros isn’t a fighting game…..yet it was at EVO this year, you know, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world.

You guys are idiots, plain and simple. If you don’t like Nintendo, ok, but stop flocking to every negative article like flies on shit acting like you know something…..when you don’t.

Wii U is doomed along with the Vita? LOL, just like the 3DS right? Now thats some bullshit. The Wii U has far bigger games than the Vita. Mario, DKC, Sonic, Zelda are all going to push units. Zelda already is:

The price cut along with Zelda, Pikmin 3, and all the big titles are going to move a lot of Wii U’s soon.

Enough facts for you? Want to know how much money Nintendo has in the bank?

“Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank – enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there’s almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out – we’re in the year 2075 by this point – they’ve got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.”

Nintendo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So suck it jackass

  135. Lengendaryboss

“Dude you are so full of shit its not funny” “You, Dragon, and Clupula have no knowledge of Nintendo or the gaming industry, you’re just jackasses on VG247. Nothing more nothing less.

You know whats funny, i still can’t find someone who gives a fuck really.

Positive articles with no comments: i could find plenty like this:
Really Francis head to specsavers and keep that advice in line for the below.

“you thought GameFreak and Monolith Soft were second party developers for Nintendo, LOL!”
You misunderstand like usual i said that their pre-game efforts (Before Nintendo) were second party and that their post-game efforts (Life at Nintendo) is First Party in fact

My words: “I mean X (Monolith) in my opinion is a good step in that direction, branching out wouldn’t be that bad.” That was saying Nintendo needed internally developed New IPs and me recognising proves their first party as for GameFreak: Look closely where it says GameFreak, they are not owned by Nintendo ergo not first party. But you can prove it if you want to. And your the one spouting about me not having knowledge of the gaming industry. The hypocrisy of all it.

“Then there is your ass who thinks Nintendo only has like two genres or something when in actuality they have games in damn near every genre but first person shooter.” I don’t recall saying Nintendo has two genres, i said diversify equal New IPs in those genres (although i never mentioned the genre bit), again specsavers.

“You guys are idiots, plain and simple. If you don’t like Nintendo, ok, but stop flocking to every negative article like flies on shit acting like you know something…..when you don’t.”

Its amazing i list a bunch of things i think Nintendo can improve on and that equals me hating. I do the exact same thing where relevant for Sony and MS and it doesn’t even get this amount of backlash.

“Over here talking about 3rd party ports are going to help the Vita. GTFO jackass you know nothing.”

Sigh you said list games i did, but i did not know that the definition of games mean system sellers/Franchises on level with Nintendo: Reailty Francis is what you need help with.

I don’t think the Vita is doomed, I just think Nintendo has bigger titles coming out for the system.

When I say a system needs games, I mean exclusives that can help push the system: Uncharted, Soul Sacrifice, Gran Turismo, ect. Stuff you cant get elsewhere.

Trust me, I want Vita to do well. The more competition the better.

Nintendo has enough diversity in their IPs. They got games in every genre. You just choose not to play any of them.

GameFreak are the developers behind Pokemon. GameFreak is owned by The Pokemon Company, Which Nintendo owns.

Second party developers can make games for other consoles. Why doesn’t Gamefreak do that then?

I knew what was said before would come in handy:

Don’t like Nintendo games = Hating.
Don’t like the console = Hate the brand.
Think it’s underpowered = Can’t look beyond graphics.
Think it’s over priced = Tight bastard.
Wants Third Party Support = You don’t buy Nintendo systems for those games, loses whats different.
Wants New IPs/diversity = Nintendo have this lists games they have collaborated on/third parties. They will lose whats different. Accuses them of not owning/liking the games, brilliant.

    And my favourite:

Want to play Nintendo games outside of a Nintendo console = WANTS NINTENDO TO GO UNDER AND DIE!

Does that about sum up the translation of what people think into what Nintendo fans think they mean?

Added parts, keep remembering in cases like this.

I could care less your views especially when its the same thing over and over again as proven or your wonderful hatred towards shooters or FPS or games that have gun like mechanics. Never said you said PS Vita is doomed: but the third time i had to link a list proving that they indeed do.

I realise the PS Vita is selling badly
I realise Sony need more exclusives for it
i realise Sony need more third party support
And when i point that out no more gets bap crap crazy on it

Look at the before and after of Wii U sales in Japan since Pikmin 3 has been released. The Wii U is selling a lot more. And Pikmin 3 helped. Zelda is going to move a lot of units. The Amazon best sellers list is proof. The Wii u has sold a lot more than 20K since Pikmin 3′s release

“Lets put a bet here Francis, tell me how much of a bump zelda remake will make?
    10k,100k, or 1 million?

    - Explain? Over how much a time period? Because I believe that one game isn’t going to turn things around. Its many games, like Pikmin, The Wonderful 101, Zelda, Sonic, Super Mario 3D World, DKC, Smash Bros, ect

Also, I am not surprised that you were the source of that “wiiu is above x1 in amazon topsellers” thing that got ninty fanboys all wet.

I said prove Gamefreak are owned by Nintendo because i can’t see that anywhere. The Pokemon Company???

The Pokémon Company International is a corporation responsible for marketing and licensing the Pokémon franchise and is affiliated with Nintendo. It began operating in 1998 and adopted the moniker “Pokémon Ltd.” in 2000. The company is headquartered in the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in Roppongi Rokuchome, Minato, Tokyo. The company has separate divisions that handle operations in different parts of the world, with The Pokémon Company International supporting the US and UK as of 2009. The company manages the Pokémon properties and releases.

“You just choose not to play any of them.” Keep on stereotyping, you have no idea of games i play on Nintendo platforms.

Oh, and this one is claaaasic Francis-
“The thing I really hate is how nobody ever mentions the difficulties that plague Sony and Microsoft. Why is nobody talking about how Microsoft is trying to sell $500 cable box in a piss terrible economy? Why does no one mention how Microsoft’s NEVER profited off their game’s business? Why does nobody mention all of XB1′s bad PR with hardcore gamers? Why does no one mention how the PS Vita is pretty much a FAILURE? Why does nobody talk about how Sony BOATLOADS of cash in the past 5 years, largely because the disaster that was the PS3 which assisted in stagnating the market severely? Why does no one mention’s Sony’s debt? Why does nobody mention how you make more money of first party games than 3rd party games? I freaking sick of how the media paints things as peachy for the competition when nothing is further from the truth. ”

“You guys just look at Nintendo’s games and say it sucks.”
And i don’t even think i even said that anywhere.

“You guys aren’t gamers, you are just a fake ass gamer that doesn’t try games beyond your comfort realm.”
Oh lookie here Francis knows the games i got on my new 3DS (DS games) PS Vita, PS3, PS2 and any other consoles: more fucking stereotypes without an inch of proof.

“I play everything, its my job” Then please go back to playeressence and do your job instead of preaching your so called facts.

Bottomline: Unless two people tipped you off about the above, i’ll drop it :D

“The Wii U is selling a lot more.”
    Huh? REALLY?
    *wears magnifying glasses*

How many Wii U’s were sold in Japan eight weeks before Pikmin 3 and eight weeks after Dragon….do you know?

The Wii U isn’t dead. Its way to early for that. The system just has a lack of games. Once it gets those games…sales will rise. Like they already are.

I love how your ignoring that Amazon best sellers list. LOL!

You proved nothing with those comments. I really attack you guys not Microsoft or Sony. You Dragon, attack Nintendo because you don’t like or play their games.

I got a Xbox 360 and enjoy the hell out of it.

And is there anything wrong with what I said? Its true. Nobody talks about those things and dooms Nintendo all the time.

The article was based off all the hate Nintendo is getting yet Microsoft and Sony have their struggles as well.

All I’m looking for is fair treatment between all consoles. And noticed how I didn’t doom any of them even the PS Vita, I just said its been a failure, which it has. And remember, I wrote this well before the price drop.

You can link it if you want. You proved nothing you fake ass gamer. Taking a snippet of a whole article. You lack perspective jackass.

“And noticed how I didn’t doom any of them even the PS Vita.”

“Why does no one mention how the PS Vita is pretty much a FAILURE?”

And even after Pikmin and 101, wiiu still gets outsold by “FAILURE” (your own wording) Vita.
So, isnt wiiu a “FAILURE” then too?

Yes Francis i admitted Sony have a poor lineup in 2014: no one complained:

Still is the case now, wheres the backlash for that huh?

But when i say Nintendo has a poor third party lineup its get dismissed/argued and misconstrued.

So please stop with the its only Nintendo that gets this treatment, i could link more examples but i’m not.

    #166 2 years ago

Nintendo has been in “trouble” since the N64.

When Nintendo decided to stick to cartridges and not adopt the CD, they lost 3rd-party support (ex. Squaresoft, now SquareEnix, released Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation and not the N64. First time a Final Fantasy game was released outside of Nintendo consoles) and people thought Nintendo was in trouble. And in fact, the Playstation dominated that generation but Nintendo survived. Thanks to games like Mario 64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Then came the Gamecube. Nintendo adopts the mini CD instead of the DVD. The console and controller looked like toys. Once again, Nintendo was in “trouble”. The PS2 dominated that generation, but once again Nintendo survived. Thanks to games like Super Smash Bros Melee and Metroid Prime…

The Wii comes out and everyone criticizes it. All the hardcore gamers complain about it’s casual appeal and lack of power. Nintendo was again in “trouble”. But to everyone’s surprise, it outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3. But what games made the Wii popular among gamers? Games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, etc.

Do you see the pattern? Nintendo has never followed the trend. They don’t go with the latest nd greatest technology. They have done things their way. They have been in trouble before. But they always find a way to survive with their games. But if you look at the N64, Gamecube and Wii… it wasn’t the 3rd-party games that sold the system. It wasn’t diverse games that sold the system. It was Nintendo’s veteran franchises that have pushed those systems.

Same thing will happen with the Wii U. Nintendo prices it’s consoles to compete with the big boys. And when they release their highly rated franchises, it seals the deal.

Right now, the Wii U lacks those games. But when you see Super Mario 3D World, Star Fox, Metroid, Zelda and Smash Bros running on the Wii U… you will change your mind about the Wii U.

    I have no worries :)

@127 – “You know that Sony and MS have looooooooooooots of other successful biz don’t you? And what Ninty have? Only 3ds? Yup.”

Ninty? You know you act like a fanboy with little facts and a lot of bark? Yup.

Chew on this for a while…

“Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank – enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there’s almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out – we’re in the year 2075 by this point – they’ve got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.

    @JM and Clupula,
Ah, I think you misunderstood my comment. Let me say that again-
“Oh, and I see poor german fellow with a dead dog barking at people. So sad.”
At what moment do I insult anyone, let alone a dog? I just said “a person with a dead dog”. Is that insulting to anyone?

Also, don’t you have something to say for comments #13,105 and 157, the instigating comments?
One more thing, its not like you don’t have any “feuds” here.

I am eagerly awaiting your response.

“Ninty? You know you act like a fanboy with little facts and a lot of bark? Yup.”
You lost me here. I am done with you unless you improve your language.
Oh, don’t tell me about numbers, if you visit here often, you should know I am good at them.

Nolan Bushnell is not someone whose opinion or analysis holds any value for me. The fact that he has no deep understanding of the business, as evidenced by the fortunes of Atari –> His opinion carries no weight.

However, Ninty are facing irrelevancy. There was a time when Ninty was genuinely synonymous with videogames, but bit by bit, generations have been growing up without them, and the value of their nostalgic games has diminished greatly.

On top of that, we have entered a gaming landscape where a lack of social network systems, multi-media, DLC capabilities is fatal, and that is only compounded by Nintendo’s inability to attract 3rd party support.

I think that they have too much money in the bank to go out this generation, or maybe even next generation, but I think that they are really stretching the limits of their hard-earned good-will and war-chest.

Summary: Bushnell may actually be right, minus the hyperbole.
