Kojima says his “erotic characters” tweet was mistranslated; meant “sexy”

Speaking to the press Thursday in Los Angeles, Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima says his tweets this week about altering Metal Gear Solid 5 characters to make them more “erotic” featured a mistranslation, and that was not the word he intended to use.

Kojima’s translator said this when questioned about the tweeted remarks: “What he’s really trying to do is create unique characters, and one is of course Quiet. She’s a really unique character, and he wanted to add that sexiness. So it wasn’t very erotic but more of the sexy.”

One character in particular, Quiet, has drawn attention for her “sexy” wardrobe, and the actress behind that character, Stefanie Joosten, weighed in a bit as well. “Of course, I was surprised to see Quiet’s outfit at first. But, you know, it fits in the Metal Gear universe, I think. I don’t think I’m allowed to say a lot about this, but, well, Mr. Kojima has his reasons for deciding why Quiet [is] wearing what she’s wearing.”But, you know, it fits in the Metal Gear universe, I think. I don’t think I’m allowed to say a lot about this, but, well, Mr. Kojima has his reasons.”

The implication is that Metal Gear Solid 5 will contain a story motivation for Quiet to be wearing what she is wearing.

    1) Much as I like what Kojima makes, I think erotic, even if he didn’t mean to use that exact word, is more accurate. He originally wanted the B&B Corps to be naked when they got down to what is now plugsuit phase, and also originally wanted to have a sex scene between Naomi and Otacon in the helicopter rather than just suggesting it.

    2) Stefanie Joosten’s comments can be taken a few different ways, but I don’t think she was suggesting there is a story motivation where Quiet has a very specific reason for what she’s wearing. I think she was merely saying that what she’s wearing fits how the Metal Gear universe has always been with women. This is a franchise where Eva, Sniper Wolf and The Boss all unzipped the front of their clothes down to their bellybuttons, Naomi sciences in high heels and skirts and shirts that show off her cleavage, the B&B Corps wear plugsuits under their mech armor, and Mistral really shows off her curves.

Quiet wearing very little is par for the course, the only problem with it is that unlike the other women, what she’s wearing is excessively impractical for her line of work. The Boss showing off her boobs doesn’t keep her from being able to CQC. Quiet aiming her sniper shots in the harsh heat of the desert with no heat protection is a risk, one a combatant wouldn’t take. It’d be like walking into a toxic atmosphere and refusing to wear a gas mask.
