Disney Infinity trailer, screens highlight destruction

Did you know that in Disney Infinity you can not only build things but also knock them down? That’s the message of the latest trailer and screens promoting the toys-to-life effort, and if you have both young children and a desire to build ambitious structures, you won’t let them see this.

Disney Infinity is available now on 3DS, PS3, Wii, Wii U and Xbox 360. Companion mobile apps are available and a PC port is expected.

Augh. The assets look so bad. How could they have poured so much money into this and it still looks so aesthetically awful? I can see pixels in the background art! I already had reservations about this due to the characters they chose, but the more they show, the uglier it looks.

You can do pretty with lower detailed graphics, just look at anything from the TT Games stable to see how that’s done properly. Or, indeed, look at their obvious opponent franchise — Skylanders. Skylanders looks so, so much better than this. This is begin to feel like cash-in dross, honestly.

I remember seeing a video on Youtube not so long ago where some guy asked a bunch of kids in a store which they were excited about more, either Swap Force or Disney Infinity, and the kids all chose Swap Force. Even kids are smart enough to tell that this is a cheap cash-in.

I worry that this exists to prey on parents who think that, hey, because their kids dig Skylanders, they’ll likely dig this, too.

I just can’t not have reservations about this.

Especially when it looks that bad.

This is Disney. Disney owns Marvel, and LucasArts, and has all of the money. There’s no excuse for it to look this bad. :I None.

Edit: I’ve seen two-man team indie games that look better than this. I’ve seen small developers that can put out stuff that’s so far superior to this that it isn’t even funny. (See: Trine 2.) And… and…

What. I… it looks like Garry’s Mod. It looks like Garry’s Mod. Why not just buy the kids Garry’s Mod and load a bunch of cartoony assets in? That’s a thing you can do. Why… why does this exist?
