Xbox One CPU boosted, console now in full production

Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:07 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Xbox chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi has confirmed that Xbox One is now in full production, having received a last minute performance-enhancing tweak.

Speaking at the Citi Global Technology Conference, as reported by GeekWire, Mehdi said the Xbox One’s CPU has been improved from 1.6 GHz to 1.75 GHz.

The console is now in its final form and being manufactured ready for its November launch, although Mehdi still could not give a solid release date.

Writing on NeoGAF, Xbox’s Albert Penello said that everything shown at PAX Prime (and, presumably, gamescom and other events earlier this year) were running on “1.6 boxes” and that developers “should start seeing” the increased CPU “soon”.

Penello also addressed rumours of production issues.

“Can I please finally get you over this ‘we’re having production issues’ thing that’s going around? We increased the GPU 6%. We increased the CPU almost 10%. We have been showing retail boxes. We are now in full production,” he said.

Sony has not announced the CPU speed of the PlayStation 4, by the way.

Thanks, Gematsu.

So is this going push the system back? I hope so, because the last thing Microsoft need is another RROD incident. How are they able to make these changes so close to release?

Not sure if it’s stupidity or balls to have a change like that so close to release.. but I guess it’s hard to complain about more power.

@5 That demo was “on Xbox One.” Except it was the PC version of the game. It crashed to the Win 8 desktop.

Xbots have been saying for months that the PS4′s 40% power advantage will show no noticeable difference to games.
Give them a small desperate boost and they become ecstatic.

Why they need a boost when they have infinite power of the cloud tho, I do not know.

Ps4 fanboys have been quoting a “40%” increases since they figured it out, regardless of the fact that shoving your factsheet in everyone’s faces means nothing until there is a difference which can be seen. You do realize that quoting a ‘fact’ in a sentence doesn’t make your point any more valid of said fact has become so diluted that it’s essentially worthless. If you want to talk about power then yes the PS4 is more powerful, but since I think we’ll be seeing less exclusives it remains to be seen if that will be noticeable for the console.

Not that I think it’s worth getting excited about this kind of boost for the X1, I mean it’s not exactly much. xD

  16. pcbros

@15 – I don’t know why people care so much about power. It feeds their ego I guess.

Did anyone care that their PS2 was the least powerful compared to the Gamecube or Xbox? Did anyone care that the PS3 was more powerful (thanks to “da powah of da Cell”) than the Xbox?

Specs are only truly meaningful when building a PC…

That upgrade shows they are worried about a perceived performance difference between the PS4 and Xbone. They really have no other reason to announce that, the upgrade is so small I doubt it would make any difference. Console games tend to be GPU bound rather than CPU bound anyway.

    #21 1 year ago
  22. Drewidian

Keep in mind everyone the design of the XBox One vs the PS4. The XBox One clearly has better airflow and a larger fan. I suspect that MS over engineered it so they could do something like this. The PS4 may not overheat, but its has a curiously compact design in comparison to the XBox One. If any device may have a RRoD issue I suspect it will be the PS4 since it has virtually the same CPU and an faster GPU, but lower airflow capacity to dissipate heat. We’ll know better in 6 months.

    #22 1 year ago
  23. wildBoar

@22 Keep in mind which of the two is the hardware company though. I’ve thought the same thing myself a few times, but in generel, Sony tends to make pretty solid shit on the hardware side of things. It’s pricing and software they tend to fail at. So there’s room for speculation, but I doubt PS4 would have a “RRoD” issue, it might end up being the noisier of the two though, but again, they’re pretty solid on the technical/hardware side.

Now we also know why they sacrificed many countries and wont release in those till 2014.

Starting production only know means there is not enough time to deliver the whole world and keep up with the demand.

+the Kinect stuff not being ready on the software side.

I wish they had this shit done month ago and could do a solid release, its all rushed and under time pressure.

They cant even test the new cpu for a few weeks with all kind of simulations.

What does this mean in respect of FCC approval status? Presumably MS have been aware of this CPU boost in advance of announcing it so I’d assume any submission for FCC approval takes it into account alongside any increases in running temp and other factors that may result. Anybody know?

The Max clock frequency is not necessarily the CPU. In fact it fits in with the RAM apparently. Not to say they can’t overclock but there is more to it than “need”. Heat and failure rates are a big factor and MS does have an advantage there in going for overkill on the cooling and keeping the power brick external.

by the way…CPU and GPU were selected according to maximum performance month ago. that is normal in post production. so increasing the clock speed is absolutely no problem because the system ist constructed for this!
and the RROD was not an overheat issue! I always wonder that obviously most of the people dont know that. ist was a problem of the tin solder an it was caused not by overheating but cooling! when you played for a couple of hours and turn the console off, the fast temperature drop made the tin solder brittle.

    This is simply pathetic!

Microsoft are just trying to give ammo to their handful of fanboy’s so they have something to fire on forums, blogs, and videos, etc.

This does not change the fact that that the PS4 has the more powerful hardware. Given the fact that these consoles are aiming for somewhat proper HD graphics now instead of sub rendered resolutions on current consoles. The more pixels you have to render the more powerful the GPU needs to be, simply as that. The GPU in the PS4 has more Compute Units enabled than in the Xbox One, and the PS4 overall has over 1.8TFlops of computing power whereas the One has less Compute Units and just over 1.2TFlops of power.

This slight increase in CPU and GPU speed will NOT close that gap at all. The clocks speeds will just make the machine about 10% faster than it was overall but it won’t close that 40% gap between the One and PS4 hardware. Unless the PS4 comes with its CPU and GPU severely underclocked compared to the One.

I really don’t see these consoles lasting as long as the current gen ones which at their time of release used very high end components and rivaled even high end PC’s. Now these new next gen consoles are already about 2-3 generations behind when it comes to performance compared to a mid-high end PC. That gap as we all know will continue to widen as we get new hardware.

I also seriously see tablets and smartphones in the next five years matching or even beating next gen consoles in terms of performance. Just look at Project Logan from Nvidia and tell me I’m wrong! That thing is amazing and will be released sometime in 2014/15. I predict these consoles will be out classed by out tablets and phones within easily 5-6 years after launch.

    #48 1 year ago
  49. Opalauge

simply pathetic are people who think a 40% more powerful GPU means that the system itself ist 40% more powerful. totally ignoring dozens of other aspects of the hard- and software is not the smartest move at all and prooves only one thing: a huge lack of knowlege.

Tweak, meaning overclock. For hardware that is not meant to be overclocked. Overheating and fan noise and early component failure will be the result. In desperation, Microsoft is trying to catch up with Sony, but is stumbling and failing.

By the way, being a fan of technology, I hope the rumor is true! :D

It is all rethoric and paper truth. It is true but it should not matter a bit, the gap should not be there in real life experience.

Though I am aware that MS use massive cooling blocks and that is cool, I do not know how this bump speed in cpu 10%+GPU6% is going to translate in real life experience either. Do Ms take into account a console owner using it 10 hours at once at least once a week? will XB1 stay under 30 celcius or 85F?

MS did NOT tweak their APU up to its throat but increasing APUs means more heat. I really hope MS does not do that just to keep up with Sony APUs which again I do not believe it would translate large visual gap between the two anyway.

Though MS last statement is quite infantile, and to respond to that dude I would say. Maybe sony does not need to state anything about their APUs because maybe, just maybe they kept it at stock? and only time will tell.

There is nothing secret, both MS and Sony are APUs that utilise a GPU+CPU around Huma to connect data transfer “faster”. and again, PS4 DDR5 is cool and always welcome of course but I doubt there will be massive discrepencies and lag on MS compared to Sony. Though I cannot confirm it but if I remember correctly while MS and Sony use AMD Apus, boths Sony and MS are not the same APU, both have pros and cons that in the mix then nulls any advantage or disandvantage for each. The only bad point for MS is that they do not manufacture as early as Sony or so they seem in a rush to catch up for Nov 22 with loads of PR just like this one here.

So… will Xb1 be good to fry eggs after 6 hours of gaming? … time again will tell but I must say that I admire MS for doing everything they can to make their new platform as ready as possible.

    @54

overheating because of the raise in clockspeed will be no problem!
if you produce a GPU or CPU you simply set a minimum clockspeed (800MHz/1,6GHz). in post production you can easily select those who are capable of a specific amount of more power (853MHz/1,75GHz) and use them for final assembly.
the whole system ist constructed to handle the maximum power of theese components (the bigger casing an ventilation has a reason).
however, ist costs because of the lower yield rate in production.

so the CPU and GPU are capable to deliver a higher clockspeed. they are NOT overclocked.

C’mon fellas what do we know?

So the Console are produce since August alright, but now Consoles are leaving factory’s. How is that possible to Upgrade the CPU when Consoles are leaving factory’s c’mon tell me that dudes…

It is NOT possible check ur brains…

  58. Hcw87

Do you think they boosted the CPU and announced it on the same day? They probably did the change weeks or even a month ago, and decided to announce it when they started shipping (and announcing a release date a few days later).

”Nobody tested the upgrade”, according to who? Provide sources.

    wrong.

there no change to hardwares. cooling is efficient enough to allow over clock and do through bios

    @56/57:

    read my previous comment!
when producing a CPU or GPU they NEVER have exactly 1,6 GHz for example. that is impossible.
MS says “we want at least 1,6 GHz!”
so they go into production an those who fit the prerequisites will be used. then you can test them to see how much they have in average.
maybe you have 4/4 with at least 1,6 GHz and maybe 3/4 of them can be clocked with 1,75 GHz. then you can use 3/4 of the production volume to have a more powerfull CPU. you don’t even need to overclock them becaus they are simply able to deliver this power.
it is just a matter of time and money!

the components of the consoles are in production for about 2 or 3 month. that does not mean, that the console itself is in mass production.
that happens “Just In Time” to minimize delivery- and storage costs.
only a small number has been produced (for the E3 or Games Com for example). the final production/assembly of the consoles has begun early september (as predicted by analysts) and it is the same with sony. if they had produced the consoles moths ago, it would cost them millions of dollars just to store them.
Just In Time (JIT) is a production principle that is used by almost every big mass producing company.

    no prob. :)

remember the 360 launch? about 8 weeks before launch they changed the RAM from 256MB to 512MB. MS investet about 500 Million dollars for that and it didn’t affect the launch. in fact, that was the biggest launch in the history of game consoles.
it’s just a matter of time, money and availability.

  63. nollie4545

Errr…. you can change clock frequency on a chip within a huge range using software or firmware alone. The manufacturer of the chip will state a range of operating voltages and give a ultimate thermal design power and maximum temperature ceiling for their product. I am quite certain Microsoft will be the first one to sue AMD if they find a problem.

I am sure MS and their product supplier (AMD) will have tested the ass off the hardware in question before it is released to market. Given that the CPU is probably the most complex and most difficult device to manufacture in the history of mankind, ever, and yet the failure rate of it is so very low (think how many million devices are out there sporting some kind of integrated circuit- car makers for example, will never achieve that kind of reliability rate), I think it is safe to say that the people marketing this product will know what it can and cannot do.

@64 – Yes, because we all know that the more powerful console is always the BETTER console.

The PSP clearly outsold the DS. The Vita is smoking the 3DS at the moment. The original Xbox did so much better than the PS2. Actually if power is so important, then the Atari Jaguar was the ultimate system in it’s generation. It was SO good, that Atari vowed never to release another system because they didn’t want to mess with perfection.

I guess if power = better, then that makes the PC the ULTIMATE gaming platform ever. Yay me! I own the ultimate gaming platform!
