Friday, 30th August 2013 10:50 GMT By Dave Cook

Magic: The Gathering 2013 and Rainbow Six Vegas are the next free Xbox Live Gold titles for September. Microsoft confirmed the titles after they popped up on the Australian Xbox 360 store earlier this morning. Magic 2013 will be available September 1-15 and Rainbow Six Vegas from then until September 30.

It’s bit of a niche game but it’s not a bad game.

@1 – You do realise they aren’t the same type of service, right? GwG is only running ’til December as a reward for fans. PS Plus+ is an actual games rental service…

@3 yeah I heard this game was actually pretty good from a few friends.

    2014 is already out.

It’s acrtually quite decent if you’re into CCG stuff (a bit of a niche, these days), but MtG is very much a yearly-update thing, so I dare say that most everyone who is interested now is already playing the 2014 edition.

So getting the outdated version is… well… There’s about 400 Arcade games available, surely there must be less pointless alternatives: How about Trials HD, for one?

#2: Your argument only would be valid if you’re planning to drop Gold soon-ish, otherwise the difference betweent this and PS+ is pretty much negligible.

@6, Well AC4 will be out in only a few months so it’s still two games with sequels out/soon to be out.

But yes, #7 is right and this would only be good if you’re new to the series.

If you say so….i have 100 plus games for free in my psn account.

But yeah is a great way to reward fans… I have 6+ years of xbox live and this is an insult, like halo3 in the first month. I bought Halo 3 in day one.

They want reward fans give them points to buy games.

@9 – a) as soon as you stop playing for PS+, you lose them; b) Free games are an insult? You’re an idiot. I still have no idea how people can complain about FREE games, even if they are old. It’s not a question of which is better, its about getting free games, which is entirely stupid to complain about…

I wish they’d stop giving out these free shitty games every 2 months.

I’d rather them just give out 1 solid title every 3 months.

Those XBOX games aren’t ‘free’ guys…Gold Members only remember?

And while PS+ games are ‘rented’ (well, more rented than owned anyways) it’s still a far more rewarding scheme for the consumer than a Gold Account when you add in the discounts, exclusive content and early access to certain content. And you’re surely having a laugh if you think 3 year old games are a bigger draw than a games released less than a year ago; that’s just the nature of the industry.

Besides, once the PS4 hits, PS Plus will be as near-mandatory for your gaming experience as Gold is now on the XBOX. Most users will have it, and they’ll have it for a long time, long enough to play, complete and forget the vast number of titles they’ve ‘rented’ over 3 separate platforms.

Objectively, I struggle to see how Gold represents better value for money in terms of service and content over PS+.

@ you are the idiot. Who owns a Xbox 360 and never played Halo 3? The same person who don’t give a fu*k about that game. So what was the point? Absolutly nothing.

If you are a silver member you can’t get this shit anyway. I as a day one xbox 360 buyer and xbox live in 360 i find this as an insult. I whould prefer they didn’t offer anything, at least i whouldn’t fell insulted. Because i’ve played those games 5 years ago or i didn’t give a fu*k back then.

And i like Magic, but this is a game for every 1 in every 10.000 xbox owners. Sure you can download it but i doubt you will play if you don’t understand the Magic World.

Listen to me carefully. Australia banned a few games for distribution. One of them is official Game For Gold September 1. This game is GTA IV!!. Trust me, rest of the world will be playing GTA instead.,SggbvkT,SggbvkT#1

@13 – You reek of self-entitlement, and if you would prefer they gave you nothing, then don’t download it. Fucking simple. I am done arguing with you.

Edit: Also, it is called Games with Gold, there was no point bringing up the silver part in any way, shape or form.

@14 – I don’t think we have anything confirmed until tomorrow. (I think its the 31st when we find out)

You don’t lose anything if you stop being a Plus subscriber the games are still in your d-load list and they stay on your hard drive. You just can’t play them anymore.

Much like if you try and use Netflix after coming off of Gold.

    @13 LOL
And the new Xbox 360 owners?
Those guys never played Halo 3 and having it for free is absolutely amazing.
And free games are free games my friend, with the same amount of money for playing online, you get free games every month.
I don’t know what is to complain about it, are they old?
Yes they are, but Microsoft is clearly just testing the waters.

This message comes from a old college.

@ All “you’re only renting with PS+” commenters – I’d rather “rent” a top quality title indefinitely than have a free game for life that has no interest or value to me whatsoever. I would also imagine that most of you making that point have been permanently on Gold for sometime now anyway, if so then your point is pretty moot.
I’d much rather have: BF3, Mafia 2, NFS:MW, Xcom:EU, AC3, UC3, The Cave, Stealth Bastard for a limited period than: Defense Grid, DR2, AC2, MTG for life

If you’re happy to settle for an old game just because its free or because there might be SOMEONE SOMEWHERE who hasn’t played Halo (one of the most purchased games of all time) then you’re simply telling Microsoft that you are happy with any old crap…as long as it’s free we love you. It’s this “We love you no matter what” mentality that lead microsoft to believe they could bone you up the ass with the original XBone policies. If you want to maintain that attitude that’s your right, but don’t start bitching if they decide to bone you up the ass a second time.

‘Rented’ quality versus free fossilized dogshit? I’ll take quality every time thankyou.

What happened to Halo 3 as a games with gold game? I still never have played any Halo game.

#13 You do realize that there are discounts too on Xbox Live? Even if you’re not a gold member? It was only 3 months after Crysis 3 launch where you could download it for 20$ only, there was a bunch of fantastic games on the ultimate sales for very low prices and they are still offering deal of the weeks and free games without renting. Why rent them when you can just get them forever with Xbox Live or borrow them at your library?

Sony’s got a fundamental problem with how they understand this industry. To them, it’s the year 2000 where hardware sales matter above all.

That’s simply not the case. MS and Nintendo understand that software is where the money is. PS+ is a great deal. It also means PS owners actually pay for fewer games. This leads to decreased revenue on the Playstation platform across the board (1st and 3rd party), and causes 3rd parties to distrust Sony.

How is Square Enix supposed to feel if they release Tomb Raider for $60 and Sony is giving up free games for practically nothing? Not well, and check that out! Kingdom Hearts and FF Versus 13 went multiplatform. Metal Gear, Insomniac, Square, EA’s exclusive Battlefield content, Titanfall, etc… The list goes on and on. This E3 was yet another E3 where Sony must’ve offended even more 3rd parties.

And it’ll get worse. I’m guessing we’ll see some pretty terrible software sales for the PS4 compared to X1, and statistically, it’s the same on PS3/360: 360 owners are just WAY more comfortable spending money on the platform.

XBL Gold has consistently seen higher numbers than PSN. It’s why Sony had to give up on free MP; they just can’t justify giving away their company. And it’s not out of the goodness of their hearts, it’s just a fundamental misunderstanding about the modern gaming industry.

I’ll ask this: Who did better this gen, Playstation or Xbox? PS3 sold a few more consoles, but did those consoles actually generate revenue? Nope.

@20 You’re overlooking the fact that PS+ actually benefits developers and publishers. Sony don’t just nick the stuff and give it away, they strike deals with the likes of EA and Ubisoft to give away Battlefield3 and Assassins Creed 3. Why do those companies do this? Because they make far more money of DLC and expansions than the game itself. Once sales start dropping away, partnering with the Instant games collection gets their game in the hands of people who otherwise might not try it who may then go on to buy those expansions. More players=more money. Newer titles like Xcom:EU and Stealth Inc which don’t get much mainstream marketing get high profile exposure for a month and once that time is up, word of mouth can boost their sales.

As for generating revenue…neither console MADE money for its creators, but third parties enjoyed a massive profit boom this generation except for the economic crisis which hit EVERYbody.
Sony didn’t lose money on PS3 because of good customer relations, they lost money because they made a system that was hugely over-priced and notoriously difficult to program for, but despite launching a year after 360 and having an exceedingly slow pick-up rate, the PS3 has only gained speed to overtake 360s sales especially in the last few years (Coincidentally since PS+ was launched) Now if the devs and pubs were worried about Sony giving away free stuff…why would those same devs/pubs GIVE them the stuff to give away?
PS+ is good for exposure, good for flagging sales, good for expanding the user base and good for extending the shelf-life of your DLC. More and more high-profile companies are getting on board with it and it is rapidly increasing the Playstation install base. So you tell me….what corporation in their right mind would scoff at that?

I think it is funny that “die hard xbox fans” are bitching about the FREE games that they are giving away. Stop bitching, if you don’t like the games then don’t download them. I am personally glad Magic 2013 is free. And I’ve been wanting to replay Rainbow Six Vegas. So its a win win for me.
