Everyone got very excited early today when an official Sony Twitter account apparently confirmed Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming to PlayStation 4, but official sources have said it was all a bit of a balls-up.
Responding to an excited fan, the SonyUK Twitter account said that GTA 5 was going to be “amazing, especially on the PS4”. The fan in question, whom the Sony account had retweeted, had mentioned GTA 5 on PS4 more than once as well as apparently thinking it is set in Miami, ala Vice City, and the account did not correct either of these statements.
The specific Sony account involved in the incident is for the electronics firm as a whole, and is not specifically related to or managed by SCEE or a PlayStation team.
As should be apparent, a few blips on social media do not necessarily represent official confirmation or even a leak; Sony later apologised for what it called a typo, and Rockstar told Kotaku the same thing.
If Grand Theft Auto 5 is on the way to next-gen consoles Rockstar and TakeTwo have made no indication of it, and given how long the game has been in development and how close to next-gen console release we are we wouldn’t expect a port to turn up until a few months into 2014 at the very earliest. A PC release has not been confirmed, either. The PS3 and Xbox 360 title launches on September 17.
