Rare says it has ideas for Kinect in Perfect Dark, Banjo, Viva Pinata

Friday, 23rd August 2013 16:31 GMT By Dave Owen

Many have been disappointed about Rare’s restriction to making Kinect games. It hasn’t bothered them, as they as they have a few ideas how to get their classic game brands onto Xbox One – and Kinect will be involved.

It’s been honing its skills by developing next year’s Kinect Sports Rivals, which uses Kinect, but also a controller to handle menu navigation and the like. It’s an approach Rare is keen to develop when they’re free to work on other projects.

It’s an example of what some hope will happen now that Kinect ships with every Xbox One console. As every player will have it, it can be used as much or as sparingly as a developer likes. Before, when Kinect was more of an add-on novelty, games had to be nothing but Kinect, which restricted the sort of games available.

“We’ve got ideas for most older Rare IP, you won’t be surprised to hear,” Rare’s Simon Woodroffe said to OXM. “There’s quite a lot of desire to do that, and Viva Pinata, Conker… Banjo’s very popular internally, a lot of people want to do stuff with Banjo.

“We want to find that thing that nobody’s ever done before and make a game out of it. We should be inventing new genres, inventing new ways to play. And this sensor gives us new opportunities to do it, with the fidelity it has now.”

What would you like to see Rare do next after Kinect Sports Rivals launches next year?

NO! What people want, Simon – and what I’d wager what your staff wants, too – are some PROPER games, not this hands-free waggle shit!

    @6 – Just because your 486, 4MB RAM, Windows 95 PC can’t handle any games, besides text-based games, don’t be a hater.

The fact that Sonys own President fell asleep at the Sony conference shows how boring it was:

It’s kinda amazing how something can fail so hard before even being released. But somehow the pshit4 managed to do it! Pre-orders are so low that they just might sell the PS brand — but I doubt someone will buy that train wrack.

Lol PS4Fanboy how childish can you get going to PS3fanboys level, lots of childish trolling makes me lol. More indie titles the better imo.

@24 – There are tons of indie games on the Ouya and it’s $100.

Steam also has hundreds of indie games and it’s free. So not sure how indie games make the PS4 special.

  23. GwynbleiddiuM

@25 Because having more options on different platforms is a bad thing, amirite?

It makes it special for the developers it allows them to self-publish their games for more than just PC and mac and Ouya and iPad…

  24. PS4FANB0Y

@25 – Having more options is good, but focusing on something (indie games) that can played on other platforms (Ouya, Steam, etc) for less money is not smart.

@27 But focusing that on Handheld indie titles is every better, playing all these great indie games on the go, focusing on indie developers mean more exclusive indie games on PS4/PSVita. And PS4 has a great mix of Epic PS4 Titles and indie gamers.

  26. PS4FANB0Y

@28 – With all respect, can you name me 5 epic PS4 titles? So far Sony has only secured indie exclusives. Where are the AAA exclusives?

European: Only a dumb can say PS4 is better than PC… You SHOULD really realize that PS4 (as well as Xbox One) is Windows-based console with x86 architecture what means it is basicly a PC :-) And do you really think this ‘PC’ for 400 bucks can beat modern hi-end PCs? Dream on pal.. Dream on.. Your so-called ‘next-gen’ consoles are archaic already even now, a couple of months before their release…

As a hardcore and long time Banjo fan, my heart flutters at the thought of a new game…then sinks straight back to the ground if it’ll use Kinect. Why must they contrive a way to use Kinect just for the sake of it?
