Xbox One: All European pre-orders include free copy of FIFA 14

Tuesday, 20th August 2013 10:44 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One pre-order customers to-date will receive a free bundled copy of FIFA 14.

Those who pre-order any version of the console will score FIFA 14 at no extra costs, and the scheme includes all current pre-orders as well as those made from now on.

The bonus copy will come as a download – not on a disc.

Microsoft announced the pre-order bonus during its gamescom press conference but gave few other details. It’s a bold move from the platform holder in a region where it has always held second place behind PlayStation.

FIFA 14 is due on Xbox 360 in September, but will not hit Xbox One till the console launches in November – obviously.

The Xbox version will have an exclusive mode – Ultimate Team Legends.

God, why Fifa. Most boring franchise ever.

@1 probably with madden or nfl in the us -_-

A voucher for ANY game would be more appealing the majority. I guess this will persuade (some) of the FIFA crowd to get an Xbox.

  4. OmegaSlayer

PS4 and a copy of Fifa is still cheaper than an XBOXOne, why bother?

  5. TF_PtMaster

Ahahahaha. Nice markting play. All preorders made to date in Europe.

Sony fanboy in full damage control?

    Atleast it’s free i guess.

So hang on, does this come out with the Xbox? If so does it come out for launch on PS4 too? And where are the launch dates?! So many questions..

Free! A game I will never play. Woo :D

Will be interesting to see if anyone is willing to wait till sometime in 2014 to get a game that will come out in Sept of this year.

@6 is nice for those who have already preorder Xbox one, but…. What is the incentive for those still waiting to see witch console to buy?

Ps4 and FiFa is still cheap.

    Get both

So the free game is a “pre-order” bonus.

This finally confirms it: Xbox One’s pre-order numbers must have remained bad, even after all the u-turns (At least in Europe).

  17. Lv01

so, what about people just picking up an xbox one off the shelf? this says that its just available to pre-ordering customers (admittedly pre-orders both past and future).
but when the two consoles are sat next to each other on a shelf in your local games retailer or supermarket, there will be no free FIFA? and that gaping price difference will… still be there.
only early adopters will benefit. and early adopters will not win the console war.

Haven’t day-one preorders sold out at Amazon anyway?

    #18 1 year ago
  19. eXite85

Whoa the preorders must have been really low in Europe, else they wouldn’t give a free game away!

Atleast kinect is free too right?

    #20 1 year ago
  21. TF_PtMaster

@17 FIFA is a preorder bonus. I believe it all depends how well Xbone will do until then.

@18 So they say, but you can preorder the standart edition, however they don’t garantee the deliver in the launch day.

  22. viralshag

So happy, this is one game I won’t need to buy now… brilliant. Xbox One is shaping up to be a pretty good deal now, this pretty much secures which console I will be getting next gen.

Pre order and get free game. Fifa 14. Big news man.
Kudos for xboxone fans. I bitched bout ppl tht preorder but this is a hella incentive. I assume you can download as silver member as well otherwise ouch.

  24. redwood

us fans should cancel their pre-orders now,… that way microsoft will get them a free copy of madden :D

  25. Ekona

Whilst I’m not a current FIFA fan, I’ve played it in the past and really enjoyed it for a week or so until I get bored, but seeing as how my pre-order was in weeks ago this is just a nice little bonus really.

I can’t see how anyone in their right mind could see this as anything other than a positive thing.

    #25 1 year ago
  26. Christopher Jack

Will the USA, Canada, Australia & well the rest of the world where soccer isn’t king receive a free game? If so, what? Madden is likely for the USA but it ain’t that big in Australia (I honestly like Fifa though, in small doses) but AFL is king here & there just hasn’t been a good Aussie Rules game in like, well forever.

    #26 1 year ago
  27. viralshag

If EA will do a deal for FIFA, easily their biggest title in Europe (sports-wise at least), then surely they will do something for Madden in the US?

    #27 1 year ago
  28. kingy

Lets see what Sony do ,a lot of people say sony keep waiting to see what Microsoft do and then do one better so your turn sony !! Lol

Guess who’s the official sponsor of Uefa Champions League?
    Sony PS4 LOL

    #30 1 year ago
  31. viralshag

@30, Well technically EA/FIFA games don’t have the Champions League anyway, Konami and PES have the rights to it.

It’s called the Champions Cup in FIFA.

  32. Christopher Jack

@28, Free EA stock, they’ll literally give you a piece of EA.

    @28 sony really can’t top this IMO/

    #33 1 year ago
  34. Ekona

@29: So what would be an incentive to add value? Price drop or removing Kinect is clearly not an option, so other than adding the biggest-selling game in Europe to the console I’m not sure what else they can do really.

Sure, free download of any launch-day game would’ve perhaps been better, but free FIFA is far easier to promote and, as we’ve seen recently, MS aren’t the best at promoting positives. ;)

Thanks for the fan-sheep comment as well. Nice to know that there’s already an assumption that anyone who has already ordered an Xbone cannot clearly have made their mind up based upon their own preferences.

    #34 1 year ago
  35. Docker Al

@26 Australia is always classified as ‘Europe’ in gaming terms – stupid I know. Our release dates are the same etc. So I’d guess that we will get FIFA too, which will be as popular as a turd in a swimming pool here. Soccer; a boring girls game. Won’t even bother downloading it.

    #35 1 year ago
  36. DuckNation

Well i’m not getting a Xbone but id still rather it be disc based and not downloadable so then i can just trade it in when i’m done with it

  37. Joe Musashi

Ah, so the rumours were about the European pre-order sweetener mentioned last week, not all Euro Xbox Ones sold.

Well, you have to hand it to them, FIFA’s a game with huge market appeal and a really strong brand. Age-friendly too. I’m surprised they’ve not gone with something more Kinect-focused but maybe there wasn’t an option available to Microsoft that would have fit.

My 360 came with a soccer game. Never played it. :)

Still, if I were a retailer my first instinct would not be to sell the cheaper console.

It would be to price-match. Bump up the price of PS4 to match that of Xbox One and bundle what I can with it. Make more profit for the same sale. Maybe include something extra on one platform or the other depending on what I want to push based on margins/stock levels.

Reminds me of the PS2 launch where retailers bundled DVD players with Dreamcasts and pricematched.

    Top what?
It was a desperate movie by Microsoft, because their pre-orders sales suck in europe, compared to the PS4. And then there is the delay of the XBone in several european countries. Microsoft had to do something.
Sony/PS4 is in the lead for months now.

    #38 1 year ago
  39. viralshag

@38, Got any hard figures on the pre-orders out of interest? Not that pre-orders really mean that much anyway.

There is no “lead” as there hasn’t been any sales. What does it matter anyway?

Try harder to put a downer on good news though.

They better give us Madden in the states!!!

    #40 1 year ago
  41. NiceFellow

It’s a nice move but IMHO not a game changer. PS4 + purchase FIFA will still be cheaper than XBone plus “free” FIFA. All this really does it make XBone more attractive to those who would already want an Xbox and like FIFA – but if you’re leaning to Sony you’re still getting the cheaper deal so there’s no reason to switch.

I suspect this move (which must have cost a bit to fund I suspect) is more about trying to increase uptake from those who would buy Xbox anyway but were scared off by all the DRM stuff vs trying to win market-share from Sony (because to do that it has to be the cheaper option not still more expensive).

I suspect EA agreed beacuse the approach will likely not lose them sales on Sony platform and MS will be footing the bill for ever “free” copy so they don’t lose money there either.

Of course, coming on the heels of MS delaying many European countries until 2014 this has a lot less impact too – if you’re neutral you can buy a PS4 this year with FIFA for less money or wait until sometime early to mid 2014 to get the game with XBone and spend more money.

At least it will generate some much needed positive news for MS but despite the potential cost of the move I think it will provide to have little major impact on actual units sold – it’ll simply get a few people who would have bought an XBone to get one earlier (which is useful of course but not a huge win vs say a full exclusive or something like that)

This also makes sense as we know that Fifa games drop in price to about £5.00 about 4 months after launch.

Sports titles don’t generally hold there value and 2014 holds another World Cup and another FIFA game will release then.

This is a clever deal that adds value without either party losing out too much (EA & MS that is).

    FIFA 12 is 0.79p:

    FIFA 13 is £10.00 already.

  43. FuntimeBen

Not to hate on Microsoft, because getting a $60 free game from them is more than impressive, but this falls into the sports dude demographic they seem to have been focussed on from launch. I really hope in the states the game isn’t bundled with Madden or some other equally sports related franchise. I have literally no interest in sports of any kind.

Now if they gave us Battlefield 4? I would pee myself.

wow i am so not target audience.
    hating sports games.
well, i bought a wiiu again today. (this pain in the ass update is downloading right now)
i think i will skip the next gen for a long time…
i don´t want a fifa game. not even for free.
someone fifa hacked my 360 account and i have a few fifa achievements on my account now…and i hate that :)

well, it´s ok. i will wait and see what happens. not feeling ps4 as well tbh.

On the face of it this seems like a pretty good deal I guess, I mean it’s free so it’s hard to complain.

However, I think there are questions to be asked about what constitutes a pre-order, i.e. if I pre-order a machine today do I still qualify (if you can still even pre-order given some recent news about pre-orders drying up)?, how long will people be able to pre-order for and still get the game ?

Major Nelson tweeted “In Europe this Holiday: All pre-orders of #XboxOne will include a copy of FIFA 14 (while stock lasts)” How much stock have MS paid for ? Is this in the thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions ? What are the chances of people pre-ordering and still ending up with no game anyway ?

I have to wonder how bad the pre-order figures are for XboxOne in Europe for them to splash the cash like this, I think things must be looking pretty bad, and I’m not sure this will be enough. Surely for the Football mad gamer, who just buys a console to play maybe Fifa and CoD on, it still works out cheaper to buy the PS4+Fifa, seems like a strange gamble from MS to me anyway.

I’ve got both machines pre-ordered, at the minute I’m 100% certain I’m picking up the PS4, however I’m still 50/50 on the XboxOne, this hasn’t changed things for me in the slightest, but then I’m one of those weird English blokes who hates football :p

@44, Well at least you’re accepting that the WiiU isn’t a next-gen console anymore so at least there’s one positive in that comment… ;)

    #46 1 year ago
  47. kingy

    @32 lol 😃

@33 a free copy of FIFA is very good no one in Europe can say otherwise I know not everyone plays FIFA but still it’s a free big game with exclusive mode to boot but it would be piss funny if Sony dose a one up man ship and pulls something crazy out of the bag , I don’t or can’t think of what they could do but for shits and giggles it would be funny

    #47 1 year ago
  48. polygem

well the wiiu totally is next gen. i was talking about sony´s and ms´s take on the next gen

    #48 1 year ago
  49. zoopdeloop

    @34 see comment @41

also since many countries in europe are devastated from the economic crisis many will want to buy One first day with Fifa in it instead of Ps4 alongside Fifa at a lower price.

Nothing’s clearly out of fanservice and loyalty to Microsoft in this case or Sony to other cases here .Hence the sheep.Any logical neutral person doesn’t rush to pre order with little to nothing they’ve given us so far from this whole Next-Gen console gaming experience
