The Wonderful 101 reviews begin: get all the scores here

Monday, 19th August 2013 01:38 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Platinum Games’ latest is a genre-blending Wii U exclusive which has drawn fairly warm praise from critics so far; here’s our round up of the first crop of reviews.

As with Disney Infinity, this one had a strange embargo time, so expect many more scores to pop up today and tomorrow; leave a comment if you spot one. Dave has been playing The Wonderful 101 quite a bit, and questions whether it might not just be a “pretty waste” on Wii U.

All scores out of ten except where otherwise noted.

Yeap, didn’t expect the western press to love the game they way it’s been received since last years E3. Nintendo never pushed the game like it was an exclusive and I really doubt it will do well commercially. Is it true the game is over 10 hours long tho? If true, that’s the longest game PG has ever made. All the reviews say the Gamepad’s Touch controls get in the way…sigh

It’s a easy 9 for me, and that’s just from the demo. Great game! :)

    7s, 8s, and 9s.

    “This game is rated poorly.”

@1 Maybe for one playthrough, but I clocked up over 50 hours in Bayonetta alone.

@3 Best action game ever in my opinion. I just wish this and Bayo 2 weren’t limited to the WiiU. They are destined to bomb in the West.

Because platinum games always sell so well?

@5 Exactly (except for Metal Gear Rising which actually sold well). Limiting your sales to only the WiiU is just putting the nail in the coffin.

Can’t wait for this game! Hideki Kamiya is a genius.

    @ActionGameKing

Metal Gear Rising sold well on the PS3. The Xbox 360 version completely bombed, less than 300K was sold. And I’ll add that MGS Rising sold nearly half a million copies in Japan. The Western PS3 owners didn’t purchase the game that much.

“Limiting your sales to only the WiiU is just putting the nail in the coffin.”

This is a weird statement to make. It’s Nintendo’s IP, they are funding and publishing the game. Of course it’s going to be a Wii U exclusive. There is no other way the game will be on any other system.

Lets wait till we see the sales before you say things like this. The game could go on to sell really well. It’s getting a lot of positive buzz. And many Wii U owners are looking at picking this one up.

I saw the demo playthrough and didn’t understood a crap.
    The game is too confusing.
Still I expected better reviews overall.

The Italian review mentions the total lack of localization, that it’s something badly accepted in my Country and a signal that Nintendo is half hassing even big titles.

Also it’s mentioned that, though the gamepad has been used better than any other WiiU title so far, it never gives the impression that the game couldn’t have been done on a regular pad.

    Looks like Platinum delivered. Again.

    Was there ever any doubt?

    Looks like not, actually.
It seems to me like a good game but nothing more, if it wasn’t on a starving hardware like WiiU, it would have probably got 1 point less on each score.
Last big game that Platinum delivered was Vanquish.
Bayonetta was stratospheric, Vanquish was godly, Anarchy Reign is an abortion and Metal Gear Rising is a good game.

If we talk about fun, from demos and videos I have the impression that Saint Row 4 is much more fun than W101

Also, it seems that Disney Infinity is better than this, they share the same release window and DI is much more marketed and with more appeal to the masses.
Still, there’s the Platinum brand boost that makes people crazy lately, as it’s perceived as the hardcore hope.
Though, as I said, Platinum’s offer has only got worse since Bayonetta.
Maybe because such a small studio is active on much more titles that they can handle and quality is taking a big dip.
Metal Gear Rising campaign is silly short, the game is only saved by the brand and some (not so great) depth of the combat system.
(Still Rising is miles better than DmC as an hack&slash)

@15 I almost completely agree with all your points. In my opinion Wonderful 101 looks way more original and bold than these reviews are giving it. *Shrug* I’ll never know for sure tho, don’t own a WiiU.

I think that it’s tragic that Platinum games are generally so fucking good, and yet commercially so mediocre. If I were some filthy rich philanthropist, I’d fund their game development until the end of time…

“I saw the demo playthrough and didn’t understood a crap.”

I played the demo and similarly didn’t understand much. It plays nicely but the demo didn’t do the game any favours by simply being a regular level which you play whilst a 1/4 of the screen is taken up with random information about button presses. It really needed a proper tutorial and for a game of this type that was a mistake.

Having all that troop against a mook fodder seemed overwhelmingly stupid to me, to the point that you really don’t see what you’re attacking.
To me, that was totally meh.
