Dragon Age: Inquisition combat shown in pre-alpha footage

Monday, 19th August 2013 00:08 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Dragon Age: Inquisition has a difficult balance to walk between the tactical options of Origins and the action-feel of Dragon Age 2; in the video below, BioWare discusses how it’s hoping to achieve this.

It sounds like timing may be one of the more important aspects in keeping Dragon Age 2′s fluid feel, but there are also abilities which blur the line between tactical and action combat, such as a skill to pull enemies towards the group, or stagger them and lower their defence if they are shielded.

Please note that this footage, captured by GameInformer, shows temporary assets and not finished character models and animations, so don’t go on your usual “graphics suck” comments rampage, please. Dragon Age: Inquisition is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in northern autumn 2014.

Thanks, PCGamer.

Nothing special. Both games had horrible combat mechanics. The second one was pure shit for casual players. I don’t see them returning for oldschool mechanics and decent party mechanics like in Neverwinter Nights for example.

fuck sake, was hoping for a witcher 2 type of combat for the melee weapons and not this button mashing bullshit that we got on da2

This doesn’t look anything like DAO combat. The video shows the player only controlling one character at a time and directly triggering attacks via button presses, as opposed to issuing orders and watching them be carried out. Also, being forced to switch cameras between characters will be incredibly annoying, as it was in DA2.

Graphics suck! (Goes on a rampage).
On a more serious note. What are they going for? Clearly not Dark Souls.

I’ve high hopes for this game. I enjoyed Origins and the second game but Origins was imo the far superior of the two. Everything I’m seeing leading up to this game is Bioware addressing everything that people said they didn’t like about part two and trying to find the right balance and it will be awesome.

DA2 only seemed bad because it followed DA1. It was a step backward. On its own it would have been a decent game. Not a knock your socks off game, but decent.

    Guys take it easy :)
Even though the title mentions pre-Alpha when you look at the video then all it demonstrates is the dev workinjg on gameplay and sometimes during the video a little few seconds of pre-Alpha. Yet they don;t show us the full mechanics of the game so give it a chance because none of us know for sure yet.
Seriously at the beginning one of the dev had his camera set up as in Diablo style…

Because a game has to be about an epic quest to save the world to knock one’s socks off?

I actually liked DA2′s differences. I ignored it for the longest time because I worried it was going to be like DA:O, which was frankly awful.
