“EA didn’t give a s**t about FIFA": EA devs reflect on first game's creation

EA Sports didn't think it would sell a single copy of the original Mega Drive FIFA game back in the day, and a new interview with the staffers responsible for the its creation and success have told the whole story in a new interview

In a cracking article by MCV, the-then sales and marketing boss for EA Europe David Gardner said, “We did some research and found that 90 per cent of C&VG magazine readers loved football. So we realised that if we wanted to bring the EA Sports brand to Europe we needed a football game.

“I said that we should be in the worldwide football business. But when I first said that, EA was like: ‘well we are already in the football business with Madden.’ I said: ‘No, I mean proper football’.”

Needless to say, FIFA was a hard sell at EA Sports initially, but looking forward to today it's quite mad to see just how lucrative it has become in all corners of the world. From its initial concept the series moved to EA Canada, and the article goes on to explain the studio's creation and more.

If you're a FIFA fan, I recommend checking out the full article via the link above.
