Yakuza 1 + 2 HD for Wii U bombing hard in Japan

Thursday, 15th August 2013 21:36 GMT By Phil Owen

The first two Yakuza game were equipped with higher-res textures and unleashed on the Wii U in Japan last week, and fewer than 2000 copies moved, leaving it outside the top 50 on the charts. I hope you weren’t hoping for these to come West.

That’s what happens when you release HD remakes of games never published for that console and hope they sell well.
It was called from miles away.

First failed Yakuza game, thanks to Wii U.
Sega wont be going multiplatform with Yakuza anytime soon now.

    Let’s see:

New Yakuza games (3-5) have a decent following in Japan who own PS3 (Sony) and play this series. They might have played Yakuza 1 and 2 on PS2 (Sony again).

Now let’s port those originals to Wii U with high res stuff, it’s obvious that those PS2 and PS3 fans will go and buy them on a none Sony platform.

    @2 – Exactly!

This was obviously gonna happen and even the devs knew it when they pre-empted the fact that this was “not about selling loads, but more of an experiment” (or words similar)

    Fail. Flop. Nintendo’s fault.

You’re all a bunch of fucking idiots. These games came out on the PS3 last year. Considering the install base of the PS3 in Japan, and the year the games have been on the market, what did you expect? Derrrrrrr.

Now, if it came out on the 360 and did this poorly, you’d think nothing of it.

@7 Failing to adapt to the needs of their customers, and tendencies of the market/industry absolutely IS Nintendo’s fault. In order for games on their platform to sell, they have a responsibility to release a console that is going to be bought.

“Now, if it came out on the 360 and did this poorly, you’d think nothing of it.”
You’re trying to equate Wii U, released this year, with a platform that has made a tradition of struggling to make any kind of impact in Eastern markets for years at a time.

@6 I’ve read that line too, I’m still wondering what kind of experiment were they thinking about.
I just hope Nagoshi regains his senses and does something, anything between announcing the HD collection or Yakuza 5 for the West.

This is just ridiculously bad for Nintendo. I see some of their fans trying to downplay this, and believe it or not, on another website I’ve seen one person argue that Sega should STILL make the Yakuza franchise Wii U exclusive, but the fact is that this was a very popular Japanese franchise being given a chance to see if it could become multiplatform and it failed like few games have ever failed. I get the feeling if it had sold 15 or 20,000, Sega would consider it a successful experiment, but this…

I can very much imagine whoever is the Sega executive who decided to give the Wii U Bayonetta 2 is probably very uncomfortable with his job today.

It’s a strong Sony franchise… Surely everyone who wants the HD re-release would have it on the PS2/PS3 already?

I don’t even know why they bothered releasing this.

Did you actually expect it to do well?! That would be more surprising IMO. Why is this franchise associated with Wii U? It’s Sony through and through and should stay that way. This was a folly, and look what happened.

3ds is where it’s at.i started playing animal crossing yesterday. my city “thugLife” is slowly improving. gf is addicted too. the moment i showed her my new melon t shirt wearing a moustache and a granny wig sold the game to her. best ac game ever.
so many awesome games onthe 3ds. imho nintendo are in top form atm. some of my favourite ninty games of the last few years are on 3ds.i actually think the 3ds is my fave platform. nothing beats gems like luigis mansion 2, ac new leaf, dk country, mario luigi dream team and so on. incredible, polished, feel good gaming perfection

If Sega won’t stop giving exclusive stuff and experiments to Nintendo it will really be the next dev shutting down.
Capcom is at risk too at the moment.

I’m certain that, like some, when Nintendo review the Wii U performance they like to just stick their head in the sand and think about the 3DS instead.

why sticking heads in the sand. it belongs to a discussion about nintendo. not to look at the 3ds as well in a wiiu discussion is sticking heads in the sand imo. i personally sold my wiiu because it lacked content. does not change my opinion about nintendo being on a quality games spree atm.
they underestimated the lazyness of third party and wiiu is not priced right. other than that it is an awesome console and miiverse is great too (must come to 3ds as well soon though:)

Interviewer: So, Reggie, about the Wii U…
Reggie: 3DS is where it’s at!
    Interviewer: Yes, but -
Reggie: We are on top form!
Interviewer: Well, some would argue ..
Reggie: Have you played Animal Crossing on 3DS?
    Interviewer: …
