Strife is the latest MOBA in development from Heroes of Newerth team

Thursday, 8th August 2013 21:44 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Heroes of Newerth developer S2 Games has announced Strife, its latest MOBA.

According to the developer, Strife’s “approach is simple”: rich, community-driven gameplay paired with mechanics that make teamwork easy, rewarding and satisfying for all.

“S2 Games has been in the MOBA market from its inception,” said Marc DeForest, CEO. “Since then, we’ve learned a great deal about this maturing genre through a wide range of analytical studies and experience.

“For Strife, we want to take MOBAs to the next level, utilizing our resources to blend the processes of game development and player engagement to create a more enjoyable experience that grows the community and evolves the idea of what MOBAs can be.”

Strife is built around the idea of “a collective, contributing community,” and creating connected multiplayer experience that “incentivizes cooperation,” and providing the community with in-client social systems and rewards for team collaboration – not simply fro landing thhighest on a leaderboard.

It also employs design elements that ‘instruct and inform, providing immediate feedback for genre newcomers and veterans alike.’

For those worried about Heroes of Newerth: don’t. DeForest told Polygon the team will continue to operate HoN “for what we expect to be years to come.”

“We’re still on a growth pattern,” he said. “We’re going to be launching in China in December of this year. It’s important to know that while we expect these two games to compete, that game is not going anywhere.”

Strife will be available this winter and you can have a look at the game in screenshots and trailer form below.

More information is also available on the official website.

It’s pretty but… ugh, so generic.

I wish I could have something more like Monday Night Combat, honestly. Not exactly like Monday Night Combat, but I’m getting sick of “ERMAGHERD CORRUPTION IS EATIN DA WURLD, SAVE DA WURLD!” in everything ever. I was sick of it by the time WoW made it its major thing, back around 1.0, and you can imagine how much more sick of it I am now now.

Where’s the ingenuity? Where’s the imagination? I could write a better plot on a napkin, half asleep, while tripping on DMT.

I like the aesthetics, I suppose, as they’re very colourful and they have magitech elements, but the setting is just so horribly generic. It seems to do a disservice to the art assets, really. I’m not incredibly interested in MOBAs anyway, but seeing plots constantly regurgitated is helping me to stay away.

So, in short: Good art assets, bad plot.

Who, Icefrog? He’s with Valve now. If you mean Steve “Guinsoo” Feak, he’s with Riot Games, the makers of League of Legends. How can these guys make Strife?

I was referring to the game’s graphics when I said “LoL 2″

The name Strife reminds me of the doom engine game back in the day, it was a very fun game that didnt get much attention.
