Battlefield 4 Battlescreen exclusive to PC, PS4, Xbox One

Tuesday, 6th August 2013 04:08 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Battlefield 4′s second screen features, Battlescreen, will only be available on PC and next-generation consoles.

On PC, PS4 and Xbox One, players will have full access to Battlescreen – maps, stats, loadouts, and server browsing. Battlelog assistant producer Jesper Nielsen confirmed with Engadget that the system won’t be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Part of the reason for the system being next-gen exclusive is that Battlelog is now entirely web-based.

“Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications. There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code,” Nielsen said.

“It’s going to be a lot easier for us to actually update things from the in-game Battlelog than would otherwise be the case. You’d have to do patches normally; here we can actually do things almost by the flick of a finger.”

Nielsen said too many players stopped using Battlelog with Battlefield 3 on PS3 and Xbox 360 because they forgot their Origin passwords and couldn’t be bothered digging them up for one game Interestingly. Battlelog on PS4 and Xbbox One will therefore use a QR code rather than an Origin log-in.

“It might sound trivial, but it’s actually making something that might be problematic for people super simple,” he said.

Nielsen said DICE is experimenting with more functions for Battlelog and Battlescreen.

“To be frank, it will stand its real test once we get it out to the players and see how they use it, both when they play and don’t play. That will teach us a lot and help us innovate even more in this field,” he said.

“We don’t have the answers to all the questions in this space yet, so it’s definitely a bit of an experiment, but we’re very confident with some of the steps we’ve taken to provide a truly meaningful and valuable second-screen experience.”

Battlefield 4 launches on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 at the end of October; next-gen releases are dependent on system launches.

    @1, yeah I am really, really looking forward to playing this on PS4, especially now we’re getting a server browser! Just hope the graphics are up to par and not too lacking from the PC version.

    On a side note before any PC elitists jump in here, I’ll probably buy the PC version too as I did with BF3, although the reasons for wanting the PC version were pretty obvious there :P.

    @4′Tis 60fps at 720p on both consoles at launch. XB1 does come with a wicked awesome version of Eyetoy though, so there’s that.

    Cute how people eat up all “It will be 60 FPS!” -rumors without official word or actual gameplay footage that is 1080p60 on next-gen :D

    @5 PlanetSide 2 = 2000 / in-game continent

    So what is yours point?

    @6 DICE has already said that it will be 1080p on next-gen, nothing about FPS tho.

    @9 & 11 Eurogamer link is useless hypetalk and Bf4Central is borderline joke most of the time with its news. I give you guys Battlefield.com, but even that I’m taking with pinch of salt before I actually see this 1080p60 next-gen Bf 4.

    Why?

    First generation of new-gen games hardly never achieve great things when it comes to graphics and performance so makes me to think “Empty PR hype”.

    @15 1080p definitely appears in doubt, but coming from Battlefield.com itself (and various other confirmations from DICE) the 60fps thing seems pretty solid. As you say though, nothing’s certain until launch day; it could ship as an 8-bit Short Circuit-themed RTS for all we know.

    Actually… they never said it will run on 1080p 60FPS on consoles… they said its the priority. Hope not like “we support esport”. So its not 100%. We just have to wait.

    Yes they did. Whether they deliver and how they deliver is a different matter but they have said it.

    @20 Ok. Its more convincing. So far I only read the interviews where they only said the other thing.

    @21
    I wouldn’t be surprised to see a little upscaling going on to hit 1080p output. They can scale the graphics fairly effectively to hit 60fps though. I would have thought other factors like the physics hit on the CPU might be more of an issue.

  23. Tavarish

    @17 Amount of absolute smelly bullshit from videogame industry PR machines just has made me very cynical about these “Yeah, smooth 1080p60!” -marketing lines when you really have just one “source” for it. Combined with no footage.

  24. DrDamn

    @23
    Oh yeah absolutely, but they have put the claim out there. It’s up to them to deliver now.

  26. mark6IKX

    I actually read a while ago… Whilst yes it does run at 60fps… The X1 and PS4 will only run at 720p… thats practically speaking 1/4 of the rendering not being done.. making it easier to reach the 60 fps.

    BTW.. Pc = MasterRace

    @26 1080p for next-gen was confirmed in E3 couple months back.
