Xbox One GPU speed and graphics driver upgraded

Friday, 2 August 2013 13:52 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten announced during a Major Nelson podcast today that GPU speed for Xbox One has been increased since the console was shown during E3 2013.

Whitten says in the podcast that gamescom attendees will “get the first look at new things since E3″ in regards to the console.

These new additions are reportedly a rebuilt and optimized graphics driver and the GPU’s clock speed changing from “800mhz to 853mhz.”

Xbox One is currently in internal hardware beta, and the OS is being polished.

The early report came from a cached article on the matter from Gamespot.

Thanks, Game Informer.

6% increase? Eh, better than nothing I suppose. Besides, consoles don’t start and end with hardware. Sony may have superior hardware in the PS4, but without the software to support it…..

Besides, last time I checked, Sony is hardware and Microsoft is software. You can’t win ‘em all.

Have MS actually come out and released a final spec sheet?

Quite a few people are still speculating they have been holding back to let Sony have a chance and stop Apple / Google wading into the market.

It is quite obvious Sony’s PS4 is very ‘off the shelf’ and the Xbone is way more customised.

Considering the PS4 is supposed to be more powerful, the Xbone seems to be hitting the 1080p / 60 fps target far easier at the moment.

Basically all Sony have been doing is waiting till MS announce something and then having a pissing contest. Look at the 5 vs 15 min recording or the 2000 friends list rubbish. It just makes them seem petty to me, not that Microsoft’s constant decision changes makes them better company but I’d refer a company that changes their mind when they make a mistake vs one that doesn’t.

I honestly don’t know enough about tech to comment on this piece of news. Especially since I’m pretty sure both systems are using APU’s or something like that which is not exactly the same as traditional PC CPU and GPU. But I suppose more power is better, but both consoles are still so similar I highly doubt there’ll be much graphical difference even by the end of their lifespan. But who knows.

Now that is just a bit better than my own Radeon 6850 OC (clocked @ 820 MHz, but with faster GDDR5). And that’s AMD’s upper medium class of year 2010.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. Llewelyn_MT

@45: The power increase is marginal, a few percent. The power consumption increase (always higher than the speed increase) is much more of a problem on a global scale.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. DrDamn

Probably of more significance is the Driver update which allows closer access to the hardware – something Sony already allowed.

    @34

Sorry, I could have phrased that better.

I should have said Sony seem to have shown their hand, will MS seem to be still tweaking.

The fact their still tweaking so close to launch makes me think that the guts of the device Digital Foundary looked at were still not finalised.

Saying that, this sounds more like driver updates rather than swapping out parts.

Ultimatly all I see is the gap Sony fans gloating about has been closing by the day. If anything the devices sound near identical.

And that means all TEH 8GDDR5 and 40% more power was a bit of a flase flag.

    #53 2 years ago

  56. MCTJim

@53 MS has said that it was a prototype that they let the wired.com people take apart.

as for the 40% more power….you are correct, its not true…based on rumors..the raw HP of the PS4 makes it more powerful on paper….all we know about the X1 is what was revealed during the reveal and E3…but all people look at is numbers..for example..more is better

    #56 2 years ago
  57. Dragon246

    @54,
    Yeah :P

Well, correct me if I am wrong, but this could probably be done anytime via a simple software update, provided they have enough thermal headroom.

Btw, X1 hasn’t undergone hardware certification by FCC, brazilian agency and so on, isn’t it? This probably means production hasn’t started yet, so they are probably a bit behind Sony in this regard. However, Sony is using more “exotic” parts which are in more limited supply, so to say, and MS is using more common parts, so it probably is even.
Launch shortages are definite reality, unlike a certain console :D

    @55

    God speed! :)

My girlfriend looks to be getting a PS4 because of the bullshit with the Kinect (she was 360 before). Im going PC next gen although may pick up a PS4 / Xbone down the line.

What I have found interesting has been:

People who defended the PS3 right through the early days, and denided Sony had made mistakes (Bluray, TEH CELL etc…), are now loving the fact that Sony seems to have ‘turned over a new leaf’.

That doesn’t make any sense unless you were criticising their decisions from an earlier point.

    Likewise,

Xbox fans who have been defending MS through all the DRM bullshit, now loving it when they have U-Turned an a lot of stuff?!

It’s very confusing, I’d have thought you were either in or out really! :)

G1GA is pretty hardcore in this respect. Even though MS flip flopped, he still wants all the old stuff back in the system! Thats dedication right there!

I’m PS4 first then X1 eventually but I’m with G1GA on a lot of the decisions. They don’t seem to have shown much backbone or conviction in their design and went too far the other way. As it stands it’s a less attractive proposition to me now than it was post E3 conference.

I think it was all about delivery.

If you show actual proof how the DRM stlye stuff, Kinect etc.. etc… Could enhance games, then you have more of a chance of selling it.

It’s like me trying to talk about the Wii U game pad to anyone on here. No one wants it or is prepared to give it a chance.

Now, as im a fan (like G1GA with all the Xbone DRM stuff), I look into it more than the average person and take time to learn to use the device.

In that respect I get more out of it (Miiverse, artwork, community etc…) But trying to explain that to someone who doesn’t want to hear it is a waste of breath half the time.

If MS hadn’t focussed on TV at the start, maybe had a ‘side show’ after E3, and just focused on amazing Kinect 2.0 tech, sharing etc… It might be a different story.

They completly miss-judged the audience and looked out of touch.

Still to this day they are trying to sell ‘always on’ Kinect, without one good game or reason to have it. The TV stuff doesn’t even work in half the countries… :/

Sony basically had an empty goal.

You know you’ve fucked it when your main rival can win just by saying:

‘We’ll let you loan your games!’

The GPU is a customized gimped version of a ATI 7790, with lower compute units and shader units and clock speed compared to a stock ATI 7790. The stock GPU speed of a 7790 is 1GHZ and they upped the speed here to 853MHZ, so thats just a bullet point and marketing tactic, “look it’s more powerful”

Extremetech did a great article on the differences between them.
    http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/162612-ps4-vs-xbox-one-performance-compared-using-representative-pc-hardware

Now look at those framerate differences in their comparison, see how much higher the PS4 framerates could be?

As the article notes, for third party games, their might not be much difference at all, especially at the beginning of the gen. However, the PS4 version could run smoother with no dips in framerate with better AA or filtering, and first party games could really show the differences between them. Say what you want about the Xbone, MS made a less powerful console because they wanted to have TV TV Sports Sports and Kinect, and if that appeals to you fine. Personally, I just want a console, a controller, and games.

So you’re telling me that you can spot the difference between 70 and 56 FPS (for example)? Do you have some advanced robotic eyes or some shit? No human being can spot a difference between lets say 50 and 60 fps.

Also, visually those benchmarks are identical.

monkeygourmet, you know nothing about hardware.First off this is a minor performance boost..i mean minor. We also don’t know what Sony has done with the new dev kits/updates.Overclocking the Ps4 gpu would be even less of a issue then the Xbone gpu.Why is that?well Esram is used on the same die as the Gpu and mover cores, this tends to make the Gpu get hotter then it should.Sony uses Gcn cores we don’t know if Sony has added anything else to the die beyond the GCN cores.

We know added another bus to the GPU that allows it to read directly from system memory or write directly to the system memory, bypassing its own L1 and L2 caches. They can pass around 20 gigabytes a second down that bus.

We don’t know if Sony has increased the MHZ on the Gpu/Cpu.Also those games running at E3 were running on old dev kits.Sony’s API is very thin it’s very close to coding to metal.Killzone SF was only running on 4 gigs of ram two weeks before E3.

I know Xbox fans think this is 360 vs Ps3 again.Difference this time around is both the Ps4/Xbone have around the same hardware GPU/CPU.Ps4 has a upgraded version of the Xbone Gpu.The thing that catches my eye is the RoP diffrence.32 vs 16 in favor of the Ps4 gpu, both Gpu’s used the same setup just the Ps4 gpu has more of everything.

    #68 2 years ago
  69. sg1974

So this increases the GPU from 1.23 to 1.31 TFLOPS (for comparison the PS4 is at least 1.84). Good news for MS and XBox One customers, though I would be very concerned they are still optimising the use of their hardware barely 15 weeks before it is launched at retail.

    #69 2 years ago
  70. fearmonkey

@66 – No, I am telling you that with those added framerates, the game will likely never dip below 60. I am also saying that those added framerates could mean added tessellation for increased geometry, more objects in the background or screen, better AA and better filtering. In plain speak, a game could look better on PS4 for no performance cost.

Yes they were, because they used a PC game that wasnt optimized. my point was that developers would have a chance to optimize the game to be better if they wanted to. Whether that happens or not, thats not my point. My point is that PS4 has more possibilities for having the better looking and performing games, as well as having the best looking first party titles.

Why the sudden increase? Maybe, just maybe they’re trying to compete. Sort of like why a particular company dropped it camera from being packaged in with its console. No wait, they did that for us gamers so maybe that’s why MS increased the GPU speed… For us gamers 😜

I’m just talking about discussions people are having on the Internet and stories like this.

Sony need to show me more to convince me of the superior PS4, that’s all. If your convinced by what you have seen, more power too you.

Forza is 60FPS and 1080p and looks better than Driveclub even though Driveclub is only 30fps…

Also, people are saying the Ps4 was further along in the dev cycle, so why are Xbone games looking to run smoother at the moment?

I’m asking you the questions if you know so much about tech.

super3001,Lol oh you mean those Pc demos they had at e3.You are a typical Xbot,MS lieing in your face and you give them a handshake and a smile as they take your money”or your parents money”.Get real MS is trying to make a big deal about their API…fact is it’s not a big deal.Sony already gives developer’s a razor thin Api that happens to run on open GL.Which happens to be better then DX11 because you don’t have to worry about MS to update it.Also DX11 has a lot of trash on it,is it good API sure but does it give the Xbone a advantage?Nope.

Sony has stronger hardware which you are to dense to understanding, this isn’t a completely diffrent Gpu/Cpu.Both consoles use the same hardware vender, just Sony has more powerful hardware Gpu wise”Cpu’s are about the same”Let’s not forget that MS went with DDR3 which isn’t good for graphics, that;s why they had to go with Esram. They HAD to use Esram because DDR3 is slow for graphics bandwith. It’s good for smaller bits of data and bad for moving large bits of data.

MS got burned quite bad hardware wise, fanboy’s like you try to fabricate your own understand of hardware that the MS PR tells you.

@74 – You are comparing Forza, a premier franchise that MS knew was going to be a flagship launch title to a new IP? I can guarantee that MS took care of the forza team and they had a big start and access to specs and dev kits before just about anyone.

Driveclub is by the same guys that did Motorstorm, I have never played those games, so I cant tell you their quality but Forza is long known for quality. Any betting man would think that the Forza team would make the better racer. Still, Driveclub isnt out and its a different type of racer, so I until I see reviews, i think its hard to judge. I have never been a gran turismo or Forza fan, I like more arcadey racers than sims, so driveclub interests me more.

As far as being convinced, go look at the dark sorcerer demo, nothing on Xbox one looks that good. Then go look at the behind the scenes demos of it on youtube where they take control of the demo live proving it was being run real time. Then listen as they said it wasnt even opimized for PS4, thats its their PS3 tools ported to PS4, and theyc an do even better once they have dedicated optimized tools.

Using PCs built to closely match the PS4 and the XBO… from Kotaku

On paper the PS4 has a 50% performance advantage via GPU core count and FLOPS.

In testing it’s actually about 25%.

The PCs can’t simulate the XBOs ESRAM and its more custom architecture, only the core counts.

So the XBO likely offers only 10-20% less performance than the PS4 right out of the box.

    @76

Motorstorm is one of my favourite franchises and was used for the bullshots of the PS3 reveal. The final games still looked great tough.

I know what you mean, a fairer test will be GT vs. Forza. But hey, they went with Drive Club. Not my fault, I’m just comparing what both manufacturers are offering, to things that aren’t even announced yet.

If we are going down that road, I’ll say GT 6 on PS4 looks better than Forza 5, but not as good as Forza 6.

I can only compare what’s been shown. If anything, Sony seem pretty stupid offering a potentially higher powered console with a game which makes it look weaker to the average joe…

Also, you are complaining at my choice of comparison, then offering me a look at David Cage’s tech demo? Until I see someone playing that without QTE’s (same as Quantum Therory on Xbone), it doesn’t show me anything.

    @78

Forza 5 is confirmed for 1080p and 60fps along with a lot of other titles. They can’t really go back on that now. Again, refer to the above.

We all knew Forza was going to launch, Sony decided on GT on the PS3 (maybe PS4 down the line) and Driveclub for PS4 running at 30fps. It was their choice, not terrible, but a lot of people will assume the Xbone is more powerful if they see the games running side by side.

@84 – Lol on the QTe’s, I hate those too :) I was just meaning raw graphic performance, and nothing beats that real time demo that I have seen. I think Both consoles are going to be great graphically, but the edge definitely goes to PS4, simply because the hardware is better.

When push comes to shove, both consoles are going to look great and play great. As a Xbox fan, I was dismayed and disappointed with MS’s decisions
regarding DRM, Online required, forced Kinect, etc. I just cannot reward them for that behavior. Sony in my opinion deserves my business first, as they didnt impose an authoritarian system on me. MS may get my business later, but not real soon.

I am also disappointed that MS was so focused on media regarding the Xbox One, where Sony is all about the games this time. It’s like MS and Sony have changed places. I see much more potential in the PS4 performance wise, but more potential in the Xbox One for different types of gaming experiences. As someone who just wants a controller and a console, the PS4 fits me better this time. A year ago, I never thought I would be buying a PS4 at launch….

no-one has seen xbox one footage.
We have however seen xbox one games running on windows 7 PC’s…which doesnt really mean anything.

As for PS4 games, most developers didnt even know it was going to have 8GB ram until it was announced at E3. The killzone gameplay was only using 4GB.

There is an article on eurogamer called “In Theory: Can Xbox One multi-platform games compete with PlayStation 4?”
It shows that in terms of raw graphics power the PS4 will produce on average 20% more frames than the xbox one, both running at 1080p.

I agree drive club doesnt look amazing but nor did motorstorm for PS3.

‘I agree drive club doesnt look amazing but nor did motorstorm for PS3.

I don’t agree, I don’t have to wait for Sony to show me anything, or MS for that matter. Uncharted will look great, but I think they’ve made errors in their launch software compared to Xbone.

Of course Uncharted PS4 will look great, so will Halo on Xbone at 1080p 60fps (confirmed). The fact they won’t be out for over a year makes the only solid thing we can gauge are launch titles or what has been shown so far.

Sony and MS have had years to prep these consoles and I’m personally a little let down by the PS4 targeting 1080p 30fps so far.

Btw, some ammo for ya guys -
    1. 1080p 60fps > 1080p 30fps isn’t always true. Its a tradeoff. Lets say, 60fps is a faster one, whereas 30 fps is a shiner one. Your choice.
    2. Forza vs. DriveClub. LOL.
One is a simulator , another one is an arcade. Forza has better performance fps (a necessity for sims) whereas DriveClub is better looking (has real time weather selection and so on).

So in other words, 30fps and 60fps wont tell anything about power unless we are testing a multiplatformer. Weirdly, none are available yet.

Tradeoffs people. Not that I expect people who take months to build a off the shelf PC to understand that.

It isn’t the frame rate but also the average draw time per frame. Whereas you cannot distinguish between 60 and 70fps by eye, you will notice if frames are taking very different times to draw them. Hence the use of triple buffering in PCs.

Anyway, if the Xbox can manage Forza at 1080P at 60fps, whereas the PS3 can only manage 30fps in a graphically less complex game, then it does make you wonder what is wrong with the development of the playstation given the extra poke it has on paper. This is Cell all over again.

Quite why anyone would design a piece of hardware to crank out 1080P but only 30fps is beyond me.

It is worth noting that none of this is related to what kind of RAM the consoles have. Both machines have cut price architecture and therefore the difference will be how easy it is for developers to make the most of the hardware on offer.

If you think this will make any difference at all in terms of graphics horsepower you are completely wrong. It might help speed things up very very slightly or make things a little smoother due to the driver being updated but other than that, nothing. A 53MHz boost won’t help the fact that its CU’s are nearly half that of the PS4 and these are what do the calculations under the hood. Its like getting an Samsung Galaxy S3 and bumbing the clock speeds up slightly and expecting to reach S4 speeds. It simply won’t happen. This once again is a PR stunt they are still in damage control after their two conferences. Anything to grab the attention of the media in a good light, guess what the PS4 will release in a different color to black, it will now release in black, and white…. No matter the choice,

While it is possible to speed bump, it will also increase heat if there is no getting faster on something and decrease clock of something else.

If you increase heat generally then can the other article stating Xbox 1 may be 10 years on without interruption be realistic?

Again, beefing up something is possible but at what cost… Developers “may” have to make peculiar choices to conform to this increase/decrease or increase/increase altogether.

Seriously, Xbox 1 can not handle 1080 @ 30 FPS or better if it is at stock? It is hard to believe this, and as much as the gap between Xbox1 and Ps4 is so profound that Xbox1 has to make those choices.

Beware Microsoft, I hope this is the right choice.
