Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate recruits Soul Calibur’s Sophitia

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate now has so many characters it is in danger of collapsing under its own weight and tearing a hole through the bottom of the universe. When will the madness stop, Omega Force?

Gematsu reports the latest character to join the cast of Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is Sophitia, from the Soul Calibur series.

Although the three games released in the Warriors Orochi series so far have all included crossover characters – that’s kind of the point of them – Sophitia is the first character from a non-Tecmo Koei published game to grace the franchise. Soul Calibur is, of course, a Namco Bandai property.

One other new character was detailed – Nezha, a Taoist protection deity. [Update: according to Chaos Spectre, Nezha is a returning character.]

Screens and artwork of both new characters are available on AllGamesBeta.

Warriors Orochi 3 is a PlayStation 3 exclusive including all the extra content from the PSP and Wii U re-releases, plus extras. It has not been announced for the west.

Wow, great choice, even though ofc I would’ve preferred Ivy.

Nezha was already in Warrior Orochi 3. He was one of my favorite characters.

Sophitia is an excellent decision. I fell out of the loop of the Warriors franchises when they moved Samurai Warriors 3 to Wii, then announced a PS3 and 360 version in Japan that ultimately never came stateside, along with Namco Bandai deciding afterward to release the games only by download in the United States. This will likely get me to actually pick up the game, the only question is if I’ll have to import it.

The choice of Sophitia is optimal for two reasons. First, she was needlessly excluded from Soul Calibur V. She was a core character to the franchise, along with Taki, and she got kicked out of it just so Daishi could force his personal fanfic characters in her place. And unlike Taki, Daishi showed absolutely no intention of ever bringing her back, and in fact seemed to go to great pains to try and prevent her from doing so, then went the extra mile to rub fans’ faces in it with the inclusion of Elysium.

So, from the standpoint of a representative of Soul Calibur, Sophitia was most deserving here. It shows that Namco Bandai recognizes her value to the franchise and to fans.

Second, she’s an excellent representative of an outside culture. This is where, aside from how Taki did get to be in a couple things since SC5 and was originally planned to be playable in that game, Sophitia is a better choice than Taki. Warriors Orochi already includes ninjas and demons, meaning that while Taki would be the expert ninja demon hunter above all others, there are already characters like her. Sophitia, on the other hand, represents an entirely different culture, filled with a pantheon of gods, a different way of fighting, and a different lifestyle. This makes her very unique, and even though her home culture is very different from the Asian cultures of the Warriors games, the one she represents goes back just as far historically.

tl;dr Sophitia is an excellent choice that makes me very likely to buy this game when I would have let it pass before, and she’s the optimal choice of Soul Calibur character.
