Wasteland 2 will have 40-50 maps, and be 20 hours long

More details regarding inXile’s crowdfunded CRPG Wasteland 2 have surfaced via an international preview.

Wasteland2Guru harvested the map count, among other details, from a recent Game Star preview; there may be some inaccuracies in translation as a result. That said, the preview claims Wastelands 2 will have between 40 and 50 maps, and compares this figure to Fallout 2′s 23 maps, suggesting the word refers to visitable locations.

That’s quite a lot, and as you’d expect, the preview also said the RPG will take 20 hours to complete – without sidequests.

Wasteland 2 will use the CLASSIC attribute system (Charisma, Luck, Awareness, Strength, Speed, Intelligence and Coordination) and offer 32 skills:

  • Combat skills: Blunt Weapons, Bladed Weapons, Anti-Tank-Weapons, SMG, Shotguns, Energy Weapons, Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifle, Handguns
  • Scientific skills: Picklock, Safecrack, Alarm Disarm, Toaster Repair, Computer Tech, Synth Tech, Demolitions, Brute Force
  • General skills: Silent Move, Salvaging, Hard Ass, B.S. Detector, Outdoorsman, Evasion, Leadership, Folklore, Animal Whisperer, Field Medic, Surgeon, Weapon Smithing, Field Stripping, Perception, Barter

The story begins with the discovery of a corpse and a mysterious radio signal; radio signals will play an important part in the game. Over the course of the plot, the player encounters a number of factions.

Members of the Mannerites are keen on etiquette and proper behaviour; are cannibals; hate Rangers; and are led by Mr Manners. The Red Skorpions are a survivalist group that also hates Rangers.

The Pistol Packing Priests are a religious group with a fondness for hands guns, and the Children of the Citadel are big believers in the fusion of human and machine.

The Gippers worship Ronald Reagan as a god, and the Robinsons are believers in the power of positive thinking. The Wrecking Crew are just flat out psychotic raiders; cannon fodder.

InXile apparently told the magazine it aims to sell between 200,000 and 300,000 copies to fund development of other games for the next year.

Wasteland 2 will go into beta in October, after which inXile will set a release date.

Since you seem to like labels I will call you an idiot.

PC piracy is nowhere near the level seen in the 1990s. I wouldn’t call people playing pirated games gamers. Gamer is a lifestyle and you are expected to give something back to the community to be considered one. Paying a fair price for your games is a basic requirement.

@1 And that’s why PC gamers payed for special tickets in CS:GO to give map makers a chance to get some of 150.000$.

And why Fez sold 50/50 on PC and X360 probably.

And that’s why Skyrim sold best on PC and Portal 2. Cause all PC gamer just pirate games.

Actually Skyrim sold best on X360. Nevertheless the PC version was, by far, the most profitable.

@backup: If you find an indie game available on PC that made more money on any other platform make sure to let us know. It will be quite a piece of news.

So you can have potted plants all you want in the Sony walled garden now, huh? How quaint. On a PC you can just walk out the door and plant a damn forest if you so please.

Maximizing profits is best done by minimizing costs. On consoles you have to pay a fee to the platform owner. On a PC you only have to setup a website to sell your game.

The argument “PC is for pirates” is pointless. Who financed the game development? PC gamers. Will there be more PC gamers who will buy this game? I sure hope so. Will the sales be impacted much by pirates? I don’t think so. People who know what this game is will buy it. People who don’t care will not care… and probably never even finish the game… thus most likely never the intended target audience anyway.

And regarding the 20 hours long – it’s just the main quest. Fallout 1 and 2 could be finished in only a few hours if you knew where to go. I bet the sidequests, companion quests and simple exploration can make this number go above 100 if not higher.
