Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13's Black Mage outfit & counter system detailed

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 may only place you in control of one character, but thanks to the power of changing clothes - I can't believe I just typed that - you can adopt a number of roles in battle, each with different properties. Famitsu has detailed the mechanic in this week's issue.

For example, if Lightning wears the Black Mage outfit her offensive magic abilities increase and she can also combine spells to create new effects like Thundara + Aerora for example. The role also has an 'Area Sweep' move that creates area of effect damage when Lightning is surrounded.

You'll be able to switch to other roles on the hoof, sort of like the dresspheres in Final Fantasy X-2. Famitsu adds that Lightning can also interrupt enemy attacks with 'Counter Blow' by battering them just before they strike, and she can also chop horns and tails off some enemies which makes them weaker as well as offering different loot drops.

If you want to take your mind off - you know - the imminent apocalypse - you can also take Lightning to the Arena Slaughterhouse to engage in some monster battles. We're guessing you get Gil and loot in return but Famitsu doesn't offer more insight.

What do you think of the above?

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 hits PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America on February 11 and across Europe February 14.
